Cross Country

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 10/28 — PSAC Championships (at Bloomsburg)              

       M: 9th/14 – The men placed ninth at the PSAC Championships, up one spot from last year’s finish.  Lock Haven came in first with 45 points. Edinboro placed second with 100 points and Clarion was third with 107 points.  Slippery Rock was ahead of KU with 205 points for eighth; KU had 209 points for ninth and West Chester was tenth with 243 points.  Pat Bone (jr. Preasville/Central Bucks West) led the KU men, finishing in 25th place with a time of 27:31 in the 8K race.  Dan Wilde (sr. New Cumberland/Cedar Cliff) finished in 39th (27:51) and Joe Haughey (sr. Richboro/Council Rock South) finished 42nd (27:57). Rounding out the top seven for the men were Tony Skiles (so. West Reading/Wyomissing) in 49th (28:13), Pat Coyne (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) in 59th (28:31), John Pyne (so. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) in 76th (29:25) and Pat McKeever (jr. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) in 85th (30:00). 

W: 2nd/13 – The women's team matched its best-ever finish of second and had four runners earn All-Conference honors at the PSAC Championships. Edinboro placed first with 61 points. Kutztown was second with 68 points and Slippery Rock was third with 88 points.  Bloomsburg was fourth with 125 points and Indiana (PA) was fifth with 147 points.  Joanna Horstmann (so. Downingtown/Downingtown West) finished seventh overall in the 6K race, in 23:41.  Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) placed ninth (23:48).  Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) placed 14th (24:09) and Chelsea Thomas (sr. Sellersville/Pennridge) was 17th (24:12).  All four were All-Conference performances.  Maureen Watson finished 21st (24:23), Cheryl Dingman (so. Lansdale/North Penn) was 29th (25:04) and Lauren Ayers (fr. Ocean Township, NJ/Ocean Township) placed 52nd (26:01) to round out the top seven for the Golden Bears.  KU has finished second twice before, in 2004 and 2000.

Last Week’s Action

THU 10/26 — EAST STROUDSBURG 3, KUTZTOWN 2 - East Stroudsburg took an early lead and fought off a KU rally to defeat the Golden Bears, 3-2, in the 2006 season finale for Kutztown.  The Warriors led 3-0 with 29:20 left in the second half.  Kelley Healey (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) scored with 26:31 remaining and Mandi Turner (sr. Sumneytown/Upper Perkiomen) finished off a scramble in front of the ESU cage with 13:49 left to make it 3-2.  Healey had two looks to tie the score late, including one in the final minute, but both shots went just wide of the Warrior net.  Sam Flowers (jr. Souderton/Souderton) had nine saves for Kutztown.

TUE 10/24 — KUTZTOWN 1, SHIPPENSBURG 0 - Cheyenne Brunner (so. Sunbury/Shikellamy) scored the lone goal of the contest as Kutztown defeated Shippensburg in a PSAC Quarterfinal contest.  Brunner scored off a corner kick from Diana Hopper (fr. New York, NY/Ramapo (NJ)) at the 70:30 mark.  Kutztown had nine shots in the contest while Shippensburg managed six shots.  Goalkeeper Nicole Rodweller (sr. Easton/Easton) made six saves in net for KU.

FRI 10/27 — West Chester 4, Kutztown 2 - West Chester defeated Kutztown, 4-2, in the PSAC Semifinal.  West Chester scored first on a goal at the 6:56 mark.  The Golden Bears tied the game when Raven Chiara (fr. Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.) scored on a direct kick at the 40:49 mark.  West Chester answered 35 seconds later to take the 2-1 lead.  The Golden Rams came out quick in the second half, scoring 1:26 in on a penalty shot.  The Golden Bears got their second goal after Alex Butler (so. Montoursville/Montoursville) threw in the ball from the corner.  There was a scramble in front of the net and Michelle Flick (fr. Montoursville/Montoursville) knocked the ball in.  Angela Corrado (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) was given an assist.  West Chester secured the victory at the 55:09 mark on its second penalty shot after a tackle in the box.  Rodweller had six saves in net for Kutztown.

Women’s Volleyball (23-6, 9-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

WED 10/25 — KUTZTOWN 3, EAST STROUDSBURG 0 – The Kutztown University women’s volleyball team won its second-straight PSAC Eastern Division regular season title with a 3-1 win over East Stroudsburg.  Kutztown head coach John Gump recorded his 200th victory at Kutztown.  The Golden Bears won the first game, 31-29, before the Warriors bounced back to win game two, 30-27.  Kutztown then rallied for a 30-24 game three win before closing the match with a 30-25 score in game four.  Sarah Brandon (sr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) had a season-high 28 kills.  Dani Witherite (sr. PA Furnace/State College) added 14 kills and 20 digs, and Shelby Bunting (sr. Green Lane/Pennridge) had six kills and five blocks.  Erin Waters (jr. Waymart/Western Wayne) added 14 kills, while Austin Kinney (so. Landisville/Hempfield) had 63 assists and 15 digs.  Nicole Biuso (jr. Centereach, NY/Ward Melville) led the defense with 31 digs and Ashlie Molloy (so. Allentown/Parkland) added 19. 

THU 10/26 — Kutztown 3, Philadelphia Univ. 0 - Kutztown won three fairly close games to defeat Philadelphia University, 3-0.  KU won the three games 30-26, 30-26 and 30-24.  Brandon led the Bears with 14 kills.  Witherite added 12 kills and 20 digs.  Waters had 10 kills, while Biuso had 27 digs.  Kinney rounded out KU's leaders with 34 assists and 17 digs.  Biuso passed Missy Klein into second place on Kutztown's career digs list with 1,356.  Biuso trails only Witherite, who passed Klein for the school record earlier this season and now has 1,451 digs.

SAT 10/28 — KUTZTOWN 132, MISERICORDIA 118 – The men’s swim team got its first win of the season over Misericordia, 132-118.  The 400 yard medley relay team of Scott Thomas (so. Schuylkill Haven/Blue Mountain), Sean Bonifas (jr. Lancaster/Hempfield), Scott Arnold (jr. York/Northeastern) and Derek Orr (so. Easton/Easton) won in a time of 3:46.05.  Rich Reshetar (sr. Pipersville/Central Bucks East) won the 100 and 200 free in 50.50 and 1:50.43, respectively.  Other event winners for KU were Orr in the 50 free (22.92), Alex Heller (fr. Willow Grove/Upper Moreland) in the 1000 free (10:28.95), John Pandish (so. Milford/Delaware Valley) in the 100 back (59.00), Thomas in the 200 back (2:10.49), Steve McNeely (sr. Glenolden/Monsignor Bonner) in the 100 breast (1:05.43) and Chris Howie (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) in the 200 fly (2:13.51).

Last Week’s Action

SAT 10/28 — KUTZTOWN 133, MISERICORDIA 97 Ashley Singer (jr. Lititz/Warwick) set a new school and pool record in the 1000 yard free as Kutztown beat Misericordia, 133-97.  Singer swam the 1000 free in 10:43.92, breaking the old record by 14 seconds, set by Christina Weber 10 years ago.  The 400 yard medley relay team of Nikki Cattell (jr. Warminster/William Tennent), Stephanie Jeppesen (fr. Bethlehem/Liberty), Laura Heebner (so. Easton/Easton) and Jill Pantelides (jr. Lansdowne/Arch Prendergast) won with a time of 4:15.41.  Jeppesen also won the 100 back (1:05.36) and the 200 breast (2:13.35).  Heebner won the 200 fly (2:20.06) Pantelides came in first in the 50 free (26.23) and Cattell won the 200 back (2:23.92).  Heather Wolkum (fr. Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair-Haven) placed first in the 100 breast (1:14.62) and Staci McGinty (jr. Jamison/Central Bucks East) won the 100 free (56.76).
