Men’s Basketball (11-4, 0-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 1/10 — WEST CHESTER 97, KUTZTOWN 93 – A late run by Kutztown was too little too late as West Chester defeated the Golden Bears, 97-93, in the PSAC Eastern Division opener.  Dave Ben (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) led the Golden Bears with 29 points.  Stephen Dennis (fr. West Chester/Henderson) and Sean McKeon (jr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) each added 22 points.  McKeon also had eight blocks on the night.  Nate Edwards (fr. Philadelphia/North Catholic) notched 10 points. 

SUN 1/14 — CALIFORNIA (PA) 83, KUTZTOWN 75 – The California (PA) University Vulcans defeated Kutztown, 83-75.  Edwards led Kutztown with a career-high 21 points.  McKeon score 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.  Ben had 15 points, but was limited to 25 minutes due to foul trouble.  Dennis rounded out KU’s leaders with 13 points and six assists.

Women’s Basketball (4-11, 0-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

WED 1/10 — WEST CHESTER 57, KUTZTOWN 50 – Kutztown let a six point halftime lead slip away as West Chester defeated Kutztown, 57-50, in the PSAC Eastern Division opener.  Mercedes Van Wagner (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) led Kutztown with 16 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks.  Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) added 11 points for KU. 

SUN 1/14 — CALIFORNIA (PA) 65, KUTZTOWN 61 – California (PA) defeated Kutztown, 65-61.  Jess Brady (sr. Wescosville/Emmaus) scored 18 points, including 8-for-10 from the line, and pulled in seven rebounds to lead the Golden Bears.  Van Wagner notched 12 points and Weidensaul added 10 points.

Indoor Track and Field

FRI 1/12 — KU COLLEGE INVITATIONAL

M: The indoor track and field team hosted the KU College Invitational.  Tony Hegedus (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) won the 500 meter in 1:06.21.  Steve Hixson (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) placed second in the 400 (52.15).  Pat McKeever (jr. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) was second in the 1000 (2:42.20), while Shaun Crump (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) finished fourth (2:47.91).  Joe W. Haughey (sr. Richboro/Council Rock South) placed fifth in the mile (4:43.02).  Kutztown’s relay teams finished second in the 4x800 (8:37.82) and third in the 4x400 (3:30.88).  In the field events, Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) placed first in the 35-lb. weight throw with a distance of 46-8.  Benn Trasatt (jr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) was second with a throw of 46-3 ½.  Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover/Newton) finished third (44-2).  Tyson also won the shot put with a throw of 50-8.  Cody Hartzler (so. Belleville/Indian Valley) placed second in the high jump with a height of 6-2.  Brian Dodds (jr. Wyomissing/Wilson) finished second in the pole vault with a height of 15-0 and Cullen Boyle (so. Hanover Twp./Bishop Hoban) tied for third with a height of 14-0.

W: Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) won two events as the women hosted the KU College Invitational.  Tor-Agbidye won the 55-meter dash (7.54) and the 200 (26.81).  Also in the 55-dash, Kate Quinn (so. Glenolden/Interboro) finished second (7.67), while Sami Barczynski (fr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) placed third (7.85).  In the 200, Quinn also placed second (27.77).  In the 1000, Joanna Horstmann (so. Downingtown/Downingtown West) finished first with a time of 3:13.79.  Cheryl Dingman (so. Lansdale/North Penn) placed first in the mile with a time of 5:29.67.  Chelsea Thomas (sr. Sellersville/Pennridge) came in second with a time of 5:31.49.  Kristin Green (jr. Camp Hill/Camp Hill) finished second in the 3000 (11:41.89).  Heather Spangenberg (fr. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) finished third in the 500 (1:24.93).  Kutztown’s 4x400 relay team of Kayla Quigley (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) , Laura Deller (jr. York/Dallastown) and Tor-Agbidye place first (4:10.34).  In the field events, Kelly Strickland (fr. Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) placed first in the pole vault with a height of 10-6.  Lindsey Runkle (so. Port Carbon/Pottsville) finished second (10-6).  Michelle Hughes (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) was second in the 20-lb. weight throw (41-5) and third in the shot put (37-2 ½).  Rebecca Griffin (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) was third in the weight throw (38-0 ¾).  Deller placed second in the long jump (15-4 ¾) and Marchand tied for second in the high jump (5-0).

Last Week’s Action

FRI 1/12 — KUTZTOWN 176, ALBRIGHT 83 – Kutztown won all but one event en route to a 176-83 win over Albright.  The 200 yard medley relay of Scott Thomas (so. Schuylkill Haven/Blue Mountain), Sean Bonifas (jr. Lancaster/Hempfield), Scott Arnold (jr. York/Northeastern) and Derek Orr (so. Easton/Easton) won in a time of 1:41.57.  The 200 free relay team of Rich Reshetar (sr. Pipersville/Central Bucks East), Orr, Steve Krater (fr. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area) and Zane Zwillinger (fr. Wyalusing/Wyoming Seminary) won in with a time of 1:31.46.  Bonifas was a three-event winner.  He won the 100 breast in 1:02.21, the 200 breast in 2:22.07 and the 200 IM in 2:09.87.  Reshetar won the 100 free (50.12) and the 200 free (1:48.78).  Alex Heller (fr. Willow Grove/Upper Moreland) was first in the 500 free (5:01.04) and 1000 free (10:20.65).  Arnold won the 200 fly in 2:04.05.  Thomas placed first in the 100 back (58.30) and in the 200 back (2:03.28).  Orr finished first in the 50 free (22.70).

Last Week’s Action

FRI 1/12 — ALBRIGHT 168, KUTZTOWN 94 – Albright defeated Kutztown, 168-94.  Ashley Singer (jr. Lititz/Warwick) won three events for the Golden Bears.  Singer won the 100 yard free in 54.28, the 200 free in 1:55.76 and the 500 free in 5:16.00.

Wrestling (5-1)

Last Week’s Action

WED 1/10 — Kutztown 34, King’s 12 – Kutztown had two pins as it defeated King’s, 34-12.  Chris Chambers (so. Holland/Council Rock South) pinned his man in 5:51 at 149.  Roy Gecelosky (sr. Annville/Palmyra) pinned his opponent at 184 in 6:09.  David Zeek (fr. Newtown/Council Rock North) won by a major decision, 12-1, at 157.  Kevin Kalbach (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown) won by a 6-5 decision at 165 and at 174, Curtis Beardsell (so. Warminster/William Tennent) won by a 10-9 decision.

Kutztown 36, Oneonta State 9 – The Golden Bears won eight bouts to beat Oneonta State, 36-9.  Brett Martinez (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) pinned his man in 1:10 at 141.  Chambers pinned his opponent at 149 in 3:40.  Joe Kemmerer (jr. Mountaintop/Crestwood) won by a technical fall, 18-3, in 5:39 at 133. Zeek won by a major decision, 15-7, at 157.  Beardsell won, 4-2, at 174.  Gecelosky took an 8-1 decision at 184 and at 197, Kyle Davis (r-fr. Peckville/Valley View) won 8-7.  Cory Weiss (so. Gilbertsville/St. Pius X) won by an injury default at 125.

FRI 1/12 — Kutztown 27, Wilkes 12 – Kutztown defeated Wilkes, 27-12.  Chambers pinned his man at 149 in 4:56.  Kemmerer won by a technical fall, 17-0, at 133.  At 184, Gecelosky won by a major decision, 15-2.  Martinez won, 8-3, at 141.  Kalbach took a 10-6 decision at 165.  At 174, Beardsell won by an 11-9 decision and at 197, Davis won 6-5.
