WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (13-6, 2-3 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 1/24 — Kutztown 67, Millersville 64 – Kutztown broke Millersville’s 16-game winning streak with a 67-64 win.  Stephen Dennis (fr. West Chester/Henderson) led KU with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Dave Ben (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 14 points.  Terrance Davis (sr. Philadelphia/Scotland School) pulled in 10 boards. 

SAT1/27 — Cheyney 76, Kutztown 71 - Kutztown fell to Cheyney, 76-71.  Ben led the Golden Bears with 19 points and seven rebounds.  Dennis notched 16 points while Sean McKeon (jr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) added 10 points.

Women’s Basketball (6-13, 2-3 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

WED 1/24 — Millersville 63, Kutztown 60 (ot) – It took an extra session, but Millersville defeated Kutztown, 63-60.  The Golden Bears had four players score in double figures.  Mercedes Van Wagner (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) scored 13 points and pulled in 14 rebounds.  Jess Brady (sr. Wescosville/Emmaus) notched 12 points.  Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) and Vivian Melvin (fr. Chichester/Chichester) each added 11 points. 

SAT 1/27 — Kutztown 73, Cheyney 64 –Brady had a double-double as Kutztown defeated Cheyney, 73-64.  Brady scored a career and game-high 26 points and pulled in 14 rebounds.  She went a perfect 14-for-14 from the line, a new KU record.  Van Wagner notched 15 points and nine rebounds.  Lara Dellegrotti (so. Berwick/Berwick) added 11 points.  With the win, Kutztown extends its winning streak over Cheyney to 28 games dating back to 1992.

Indoor Track and Field

Last Week’s Action

WED 1/24 — at Ursinus Pentathlon - Four  Kutztown track and field members competed at the Ursinus Pentathlon.  Shane Reigel (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) placed ninth out of 20 men competitors with 2,725 points.  Trenton Branamn (fr. Pennsbury/Pennsbury) was 12th with 2,554 and Tim Ohm (fr. Media/Penncrest) was 13th with 2,542 points.  Rebecca Kerchak (so. Sinking Spring/Wilson) competed in a field of 10 women and placed seventh with 2,404 points.

FRI 1/26 — at Bucknell Bison Open

M: The men competed at the Bucknell Bison Open.  Brian Dodds (jr. Wyomissing/Wilson) placed first in the pole vault with a height of 14-9.  Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) finished second in the shot put with a NCAA provisional throw of 52-1 3/4.  Cody Hartzler (so. Belleville/Indian Valley) was second in the long jump with a jump of 6-5.  Ian Clark (jr. Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) placed fourth in the heptathlon with 4,333 points.  Tony Hegedus (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) came in second in the 400 meter with a time of 49.90.  The 4x400 relay team of Steve Hixson (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Hartzler, Jason Rowles (fr. Springfield/Marple Newtown) and Hegedus  finished third with a time of 3:25.96.

W: The distance medley relay team of Cheryl Dingman (so. Lansdale/North Penn), Katie Quinn (so. Glenolden/Interboro), Joanna Horstmann (so. Downingtown/Downingtown West) and Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) set a new KU record at the Bucknell Bison open with a time of 12:23.97.  The team placed second overall.  The 4x400 relay team of Kayla Quigley (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack), Quinn, and Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) placed third with a time of 4:08.58.  Horstmann finished second in the mile (5:13.97).  Marchand and Brooke McMurray (so. HawleyWallenpaupack) tied for second in the high jump with jumps of 5-1.  Marchand also placed third in the pentathlon with 3,365 points.

Last Week’s Action

SUN 1/28 — Shippensburg 116, Kutztown 87 – Shippensburg defeated Kutztown, 116-87.  The 400 yard free relay team of Steve Krater (fr. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area), Rich Reshetar (sr. Pipersville/Central Bucks East), Zane Zwillinger (fr. Wyalusing/Wyoming Seminary) and Derek Orr (so. Easton/Easton) came in first with a time of 3:22.83.  Reshetar placed first in the 100 free (50.01) and Sean Bonifas (jr. Lancaster/Hempfield) won the 100 breast (1:02.79).

Women’s Swimming (3-5, 2-4 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

SUN 1/28 — Shippensburg 112, Kutztown 85 Ashley Singer (jr. Lititz/Warwick) won two events as Kutztown fell to Shippensburg, 112-85.  Singer won the 100 yard free (56.16) and 200 free (1:58.13).  Staci McGinty (jr. Jamison/Central Bucks East) won the 1000 free (11:16.35).  Steph Jeppesen (fr. Bethlehem/Liberty) came in first in the 200 IM (2:13.73).  The 400 free relay team of McGinty, Christine Paski (fr. Wilmington, DE/Concord), Heather Wolkom (fr. Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair-Haven) and Liz Rega (sr. Royersford/Spring-Ford) placed first with a time of 3:57.56.

Last Week’s Action

SAT 1/27 — at PSAC Championship

7th/8 – Joe Kemmerer (jr. Mountaintop/Crestwood) finished in second place at 133 as Kutztown finished seventh at the PSAC Championships.  Edinboro came in first with 147.5 points, Bloomsburg placed second with 119.  Lock Haven finished third with 111.5 points.  Clarion placed fourth (79), East Stroudsburg fifth (57), Millersville sixth (44.5), Kutztown seventh (43.5) and Shippensburg eighth (23).  Kemmerer was 2-1 on the day with two decisions.  His runner-up effort was KU's best finish at the PSAC Championships in 30 years.  The Golden Bears had seven sixth place finishes: Cory Weiss (so. Gilbertsville/St. Pius X) at 125, Bret Martinez (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) at 141, Chris Chambers (so. Holland/Council Rock South) at 149, Eric Bauder (fr. Emmaus/Emmaus) at 174, Andrew Osborne (fr. Philadelphia/Milton Hershey) at 184, Kyle Davis (r-fr. Peckville/Valley View) at 197 and Rich Dalmas (fr. Mountaintop/Crestwood) at 285.  David Zeek (fr. Newtown/Council Rock North) at 157 and Sonny Flood (so. Southampton/William Tennent) at 165 rounded out Kutztown’s line-up.
