WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (15-6, 4-3 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 1/31 — KUTZTOWN 74, EAST STROUDSBURG 69 Dave Ben (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 23 points en route to Kutztown’s 74-69 win over East Stroudsburg.  Ben notched the game-high 23 points and pulled seven rebounds.  He also had four steals.  Sean McKeon (jr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) scored 18 points, grabbed 12 boards and blocked six shots.  Nate Edwards (fr. Philadelphia/North Catholic) had 16 points while Stephen Dennis (fr. West Chester/Henderson) added 12 points. 

SAT 2/3 — Kutztown 88, West Chester 86 (2OT) –Ben scored 27 points to lead Kutztown to a thrilling 88-86 double-overtime win over West Chester.  Ben led three Golden Bears in double figures.  Dennis added 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Terrance Davis (sr. Philadelphia/Scotland School) scored 14 points and grabbed 10 boards.  McKeon had 11 rebounds.

Women’s Basketball (6-15, 2-5 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

WED 1/31 — EAST STROUDSBURG 64, KUTZTOWN 56 – East Stroudsburg defeated Kutztown, 64-56.  Mercedes Van Wagner (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) and Jess Brady (sr. Wescosville/Emmaus) each scored 17 points for Kutztown.  Van Wagner grabbed 11 rebounds while Brady pulled in 10. 

SAT 2/3 — West Chester 69, Kutztown 64 – Four players scored in double figures to lead West Chester to a 69-64 win over.  Rachel Wisemiller (fr. Hazleton/Hazleton) led Kutztown with 15 points and seven rebounds.  Brady added 13 points, while Katie Harlor (sr. Danville/Danville) chipped in 12.

FRI 2/2-SAT 2/3 — at New Balance Invitational (New York)

M: The men competed at the prestigious New Balance Invitational at the Armory in New York.  Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) placed 20th in the shot put with a NCAA provisional throw of 52-4 ˝.  Cody Hartzler (so. Belleville/Indian Valley) tied for 11th in the high jump with a jump of 6-5.  Tony Hegedus (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) placed 50th in the 400 meter run with a time of 49.44.  The 4x400 relay team of Steve Hixson (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Hartzler, Hegedus and Jason Rowles (fr. Springfield/Marple Newtown) placed 25th with a time of 3:24.85.

W: Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) placed 10th in the 5000 meter run (18:28.67) at the New Balance Invitational at the Armory in New York.  Kelly Strickland (fr. Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) tied for 12th in the pole vault with a height of 10-10.  Joanna Horstmann (so. Downingtown/Downingtown West) finished 15th in the mile (5:07.46) while Cheryl Dingman (so. Lansdale/North Penn) placed 28th (5:17.77).

Men’s Swimming (4-3, 2-2 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

SAT 2/3 — Rowan 135.5, Kutztown 109.5 – Kutztown lost to Rowan, 135.5-109.5.  Alex Heller (fr. Willow Grove/Upper Moreland) won two events for the Golden Bears.  He won the 500 yard free in 5:01.34 and the 1000 free in 10:20.24.  Scott Thomas (so. Schuylkill Haven/Blue Mountain) came in first in the 200 back in 2:03.37.  Chris Howie (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) swam a PSAC qualifying time (2:06.38) in the 200 fly and finished third.

Women’s Swimming (3-6, 2-4 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

SAT 2/3 — Rowan 157, Kutztown 103 - Rowan defeated Kutztown 157-103.  Ashley Singer (jr. Lititz/Warwick) and Steph Jeppesen (jr. Bethlehem/Liberty) were each three individual event winners.  Singer was the winner in the 100 yard free (54.81), 200 free (1:57.10) and the 500 free (5:18.86).  Jeppesen placed first in the 200 IM (2:15.02), 100 breast (1:08.76) and set a new pool record in the 200 breast (2:26.96).  The 200 medley relay of Nikki Cattell (jr. Warminster/William Tennent), Jeppesen, Singer and Jill Pantelides (jr. Lansdowne/Arch Prendergast) came in first with a time of 1:54.80.  Heather Wolkom (fr. Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven) finished second in the 100 breast with a PSAC qualifying time of 1:09.56.

Last Week’s Action

WED 1/31 — Kutztown 33, Elizabethtown 7 – Kutztown defeated Elizabethtown 33-7.  Joe Kemmerer (jr. Mountaintop/Crestwood) pinned his man in 1:52 at 133.  Brett Martinez (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) won by a major decision, 12-4, at 141.  At 149, Chris Chambers (so. Holland/Council Rock South) also won by a major decision, 15-4.  Sonny Flood (so. Southampton/William Tennent) won at 165, 5-0.  Curtis Beardsell (so. Warminster/William Tennent) defeated his opponent 11-5 at 174.  At 184, Roy Geceosky (sr. Annville/Palmyra) won 3-1.  Kyle Davis (r-fr. Peckville/Valley View) won by a major decision, 13-3, at 197 and Rich Dalmas (fr. Mountaintop/Crestwood) won by an injury default at 285.
