WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (17-8, 6-5 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       THU 2/15 — KUTZTOWN 82, MILLERSVILLE 79 (ot) – It took an extra session, but Kutztown defeated Millersville, 82-79.  Sean McKeon (jt. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) led the Golden Bears with a triple-double.  He scored 19 points, pulled in 16 rebounds and blocked 11 shots.  His 11 blocks ties the KU single-game record (Bilal Salaam had 11 blocks against UDC in 2002).  Dave Ben (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) hit three three-pointers en route to his 19 points.  Nate Edwards (fr. Philadelphia/North Catholic) and Stephen Dennis (fr. West Chester/Henderson) each added 14 points.  Dennis also had four blocks. 

SAT 2/17 — KUTZTOWN 73, CHEYNEY 70 – Kutztown erased a 17-point second-half deficit to pull off a thrilling 73-70 win over Cheyney.  McKeon scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead KU.  Edwards and Dennis scored 14 points apiece while Ben added 13.  With one week left in the regular season, Kutztown is tied for second in the PSAC East with Cheyney.

Women’s Basketball (9-16, 5-6 PSAC East)

THU 2/15 — MILLERSVILLE 57, KUTZTOWN 54 – A buzzer beater by Millersville gave it the 57-54 win over Kutztown.  Mercedes Van Wagner (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) led KU with 14 points and nine rebounds.  Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) scored 13 points while Lara Dellegrotti (so. Berwick/Berwick) added 11. 

SAT 2/17 — KUTZTOWN 64, CHEYNEY 53 – Kutztown defeated Cheyney, 64-53.  The win was the 200th in the 13-year career of Kutztown head coach Janet Malouf.  She has a record of 200-153.  Jess Brady (sr. Wescosville/Emmaus) scored 13 points to lead the Golden Bears.  Van Wagner notched nine points.  Dellegrotti and Vivian Melvin (fr. Chichester/Chichester) each added eight.  The win extends Kutztown’s winning streak over Cheyney to 29 games, dating back to the 1991-92 season. The women are still alive in the PSAC playoff hunt, but need Mansfield to lose its remaining two games and win at ESU on Friday night.

Indoor Track and Field

SAT 2/17 — at Princeton Invitational

M:  The men’s indoor track and field team competed at the Princeton Invitational.  Tony Hegedus (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) won the 400-meter dash in 49.67.  The 4x400 relay of Steve Hixson (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Cody Hartzler (so. Belleville/Indian Valley), Hegedus and Jason Rowles (fr. Springfield/Marple Newtown) placed second in 3:24.68.  Hartzler also placed third in the high jump with a height of 6-4.
W Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) won the 400-meter in 58.55 at the Princeton Invitational.  Kayla Quigley (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) came in second in the 60-hurdles in 9.50.  Brooke McMurray (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) finished third in the high jump with a height of 5-1 and Michelle Hughes (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) placed third in the shot put with a throw of 40-2.
