Men’s Basketball (17-10, 6-6 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 2/21 — DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 84, KUTZTOWN 81 (ot) – UDC hit a buzzer-beater to defeat Kutztown, 84-81, in overtime.  Stephen Dennis (fr. West Chester/Henderson) scored a career-high 28 points.  Dave Ben (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) notched 14 points.  Nate Edwards (fr. Philadelphia/North Catholic) netted 13 points.  Sean McKeon (jr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) added 10 points, pulled in nine rebounds and blocked seven shots. 

FRI 2/23 — East Stroudsburg 74, Kutztown 72 – East Stroudsburg erased a 16 point second half deficit to defeat Kutztown, 74-72.  Dennis scored 21 points.  Ben added 15 and McKeon scored 10 points, with nine rebounds and seven blocks.  McKeon set KU's single-season shot blocks record with 114, passing Marty Eggleston (108, 1987-88).

FRI 2/23 — East Stroudsburg 72, Kutztown 48 – East Stroudsburg defeated Kutztown in the final regular season PSAC Eastern Division game.  Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) and Vivian Melvin (fr. Chichester/Chichester) each scored 12 points for the Golden Bears.  Rachel Wisemiller (fr. Hazleton/Hazleton) blocked three shots.

SAT 2/24-SUN 2/25 — at PSAC Indoor Championships (at East Stroudsburg)

M: 7th/10 - Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) turned in the top individual performance for the Golden Bears, winning his third consecutive PSAC indoor championship in the shot put.  His winning throw of 53-2 3/4 was an NCAA provisional performance.  KU's men were seventh out of 13 teams with 48 points.  Lock Haven won the team title with 140.  Shippensburg was second (117) and East Stroudsburg third (82).  Slippery Rock (70.5), West Chester (66) and Indiana (48.5) were fourth-through-sixth.  Following KU was Cheyney with 38 points.  Cody Hartzler (so. Belleville/Indian Valley) tied for second in the high jump (6-8 1/4) and Brian Dodds (jr. Wyomissing/Wilson) placed second in the pole vault (15-5 1/2).  Ben Trasatt (jr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) finished seven in the weight throw (48-10 ¼).  Tony Hegedus (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) was third in the 400 (49.49) and seventh in the 200 (22.94).  Ian Clark (jr. Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) placed third in the pentathlon (3,363).  The 4x800 relay of Steve Hixson (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Ben Loht (fr. Lewistown/Indian Valley), Patrick Coyne (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) and Pat McKeever (jr. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) finished sixth (8:11.56).  The 4x400 relay team of Hixson, Hartzler, Hegedus and Jason Rowles (fr. Springfield/Marple Newtown) placed seventh (3:26.50) and the distance medley relay team of Joe Haughey (sr. Richboro/Council Rock South), Rowles, McKeever, John Pyne (so. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) came in seventh (10:37.93).

W: 3rd/14 - Kutztown University's women's indoor track & field team placed third at the PSAC Championship.  The KU women placed third with 73.5 points, coming up short in their bid for a fourth-straight PSAC indoor title.  Slippery Rock ran away with the team title with 162.5 points.  Lock Haven was second with 86.  East Stroudsburg was fourth with 72, followed by Shippensburg with 68.  Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) placed in three events.  She was second in the pentathlon (3,378 points), tied for fourth in the high jump (5-3 1/4) and was sixth in the long jump (17-2). Laura Deller (jr. York/Dallastown) finished seventh in the long jump (17-1 ¼).  Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) finished second in the 5000 (18:03.66) and was fourth in the 3000 (10:23.99). Kelly Strickland (fr. Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) placed second in the pole vault (11-2 1/4).  Lindsay Runkle (so. Port Carbon/Pottsville) came in fourth (10-8 ¼) and Rachel Weigle (fr. Red Lion/Red Lion) tied for seventh (9-8 ½) in the pole vault.  Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) rounded out KU's top three finishers, placing third in the 400 (59.47).  All top-three individual finishers earned All-PSAC status.  Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) finished seventh in the mile (5:12.00). Joanna Horstmann (so. Downingtown/Downingtown West) placed eighth in the mile (5:12.86) and eighth in the 800 (2:24.44). Kayla Quigley (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) came in sixth in the 55-hurdles (8.70).  Michelle Hughes (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) placed fifth in the shot put (39-5) and seventh in the weight throw (44-11 ¾).  The 4x800 relay of Cheryl Dingman (so. Lansdale/North Penn), Bower, Jessica Schlechter (fr. Chalfont/Central Bucks South), Horstmann finished fourth (9:34.26). The 4x400 relay of Katie Quinn (so. Glenolden/Interboro), Marchand, Brooke McMurray (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) and Tor-Agbidye was sixth (4:04.92), as was the distance medley relay team of Becky Webb (fr. Laurys Station/Parkland), McMurray, Jessica Donovan (so. Newtown/Pennsbury), Chelsea Thomas (sr.Sellersville/Pennridge) (13:04.26).

THU 2/22-SUN 2/25 — at PSAC Championships

M: 4th/7 – The KU men edged Edinboro for fourth place at the PSAC Championships.  KU scored 280 team points, two ahead of Edinboro, with 278.  West Chester won the team title with 907.5 points.  Clarion was second with 685, followed by Shippensburg with 622.  The top individual performance for the KU men came in the 100 breast, where Sean Bonifas (jr. Lancaster/Hempfield) placed fifth (59.92) and Nelson Martinez (so. Allentown/Dieruff) finished 15th (1:04.77).  In the 200 breast, Bonifas placed 10th (2:15.57) while Martinez was 13th (2:18.85).  Bonifas also placed 14th in the 200 IM (2:03.24).  KU's 200 free relay (Rich Reshetar (sr. Pipersville/Central Bucks East), Derek Orr (so. Easton/Easton), Steve Krater (fr. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area) and Scott Arnold (jr. York/Northeastern)) (1:29.37) and 800 free relay (Orr, Alex Heller (fr. Willow Grove/Upper Moreland), Krater and Reshetar) placed fourth (7:11.53). The 400 free relay of Orr, Zane Zwillinger (fr. Wyalusing/Wyoming Seminary), Krater and Reshetar came in fifth (3:15.11) and the 200 medley relay of Scott Thomas (so. Schuylkill Haven/Blue Mountain), Bonifas, Arnold and Orr finished sixth (1:40.17).  In the 50 free, Reshetar finished 14th (22.46) while Orr placed 15th (22.53).  In the 100 free, Orr was 12th (48.73), Reshetar was 13th (48.99) and Krater was 16th (49.71).  Reshetar was 12th in the 200 free (1:47.37).  Orr was 13th (1:47.50) and Krater placed 16th (1:51.08).  In the 500 free, Heller finished ninth (4:48.63), Thomas placed 11th (4:51.77) and Greg Fournier (jr. Warrington/Central Bucks East) was 14th (4:54.20).  Fournier placed eighth in the 1000 free (9:57.72) while Heller was ninth (10:00.35).  In the 1650 free, Heller was eighth (16:50.83) and Fournier was 14th (17:08.56).  Thomas finished seventh in the 200 back (1:58.72) and ninth in the 100 back (55.63).  Arnold came in 13th in the 100 fly (54.88).  In the 200 fly, John Pandish (so. Milford/Delaware Valley) finished ninth (2:01.55), Arnold was 10th (2:02.37) and Shawn Santo (fr. Allentown/Parkland) placed 14th (2:04.08).  Pandish came in 10th in the 400 IM (4:22.12) and Santo finished 12th (4:27.00).

Women’s Swimming (3-6, 2-4 PSAC)

THU 2/22-SUN 2/25 — at PSAC Championships

W: 7th/13 – KU's women scored 213.5 points for seventh place at the PSAC CHampionships.  West Chester won the women's crown with 810 points.  Clarion was second (562) and Indiana (PA) was third (381).  Shippensburg (377), Bloomsburg (338) and Edinboro (253) were fourth-through-sixth.  California (PA) followed Kutztown with 190 points.  Ashley Singer (jr. Lititz/Warwick) set two Kutztown records and qualified for nationals.  Singer led off the 800 yard free relay and swam 1:53.94 to qualify for nationals.  Singer placed second in the 500 free with a KU record of 5:06.01. She also set a record in the 200 free placing second with a time of 1:54.15.  In both events, Singer broke her own records, bettering her time in the 200 (1:55.72) and in the 500 (5:09.20), both from 2006.  She also finished fourth in the 100 free with an NCAA B-cut time of 53.36.  Steph Jeppesen (fr. Bethlehem/Liberty) placed fourth in the 200 breast with an NCAA-B cut and school-record time of 2:25.43.  Jeppeson also placed ninth in the 100 breast (1:08.22), 14th in the 200 IM (2:14.50).  Other Kutztown place winners included Staci McGinty (jr. Jamison/Central Bucks East) in the 200 free (11th, 1:58.36), 500 free (13th, 5:18.43) and 1650 free (16th, 18:46.50); Nikki Cattell (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) in the 100 back (15th, 1:03.06), Laura Heebner (so. Easton/Easton) in the 400 IM (13th, 4:49.83) and the 200 fly (10th, 2:18.02).  Joining singer on the fifth-place 800 free relay team (7:58.10) were Jill Pantelides (jr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Prendergast), Cattell and McGinty.  KU’s 400 medley relay of Cattell, Jeppeson, Singer and McGinty placed fifth (4:40.76).  The 200 medley relay of Cattell, Jeppeson, Singer and Pantelides was seventh (1:53.59).  The 400 free relay of Singer, Pantelides, Cattell and McGinty was eighth (3:39.73).  The 200 free relay team of Pantelides, Jeppeson, Heebner and Heather Wolkum (fr. Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair-Haven) placed 11th (1:42.96).

FRI 2/23-SAT 2/24 — NCAA East Regionals (at UNC Pembroke)

6th/13: Kutztown University Wrestling finished sixth out of 13 teams at the NCAA Division II East Regional at UNC-Pembroke.  Pitt-Johnstown won its fifth-consecutive NCAA East Regional title with 120 points.  Mercyhurst placed second with 113.5 and Shippensburg was third with 100 points.  West Liberty finished fourth (91.5), Newberry fifth (86) and Kutztown sixth (69.5).  Gannon placed seventh (58) and UNC-Pembroke was eighth (57).  Belmont Abbey finished ninth (56) and Limestone 10th (44.5).  American International and Anderson tied for 11th (11) and St. Andrews Presbyterian finished 13th (0.5).  Kutztown has three grapplers, Joe Kemmerer (jr. Mountaintop/Crestwood), Kevin Kalbach (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown) and Chris Chambers (so. Holland/Council Rock South), moving onto the NCAA Championships.  Kemmerer finished first at 133 lbs. to gain the individual title and earn his first Division II national berth.  In the championship bout, Kemmerer defeated the reigning 133 lb. champion, Brandon Reasy from Pitt-Johnstown, 5-2.  Kalbach earns his first individual title and second-straight national berth.  Kalbach defeated Phil Bliss from Belmont-Abbey, 3-1, in the championship round.  Chambers won his fifth place about at 149 lbs. to move on to the true fourth-place bout.  There he defeated Joey Hagedorn from West Liberty to earn his second-straight national berth.  The Golden Bears had two other place winners - Brett Martinez (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) finished fifth at 141 and Roy Gecelosky (sr. Annville/Palmyra) placed sixth at 184.

THU 2/22-SUN 2/24 — at Newport News, VA

THU 2/22 — Kutztown 7, East Stroudsburg 2 - Kutztown opened play at the Apprentice School Builder Invitational with a 7-2 win over East Stroudsburg.  Jeff Craig (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) was 2-for-2 with three RBI, including a two-run homer in the third.  Nate Kranz (so. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.  Philip Rummel (jr Exeter/West-Mont Christian) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and no runs with four strikeouts. 

FRI 2/23 — Kutztown 13, Apprentice 0 (7inn.) - Darin Gorski (fr. Mount Joy/Donegal) and Mike Bucklin (fr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) combined for a no-hitter against Apprentice.  Kutztown won the game 13-0.  Gorski pitched 5.0 innings and struck out seven.  Bucklin pitched the final two innings and struck out two.  Chad Lightcap (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.

SAT 2/24 — Kutztown 8, Lock Haven 6 - Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) pitched six inning for the win as Kutztown defeated Lock Haven, 8-6.  Mills gave up three runs, two earned,  and struck-out six.  Mike McCardell (sr. West Chester/Henderson) picked up the save.  Sean Bond (sr. Malvern/Great Valley) went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Matt Dierolf (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

Kutztown 12, Bloomsburg 2 - Lightcap was 5-for-5 with six RBI to lead Kutztown to a 12-2 win over Bloomsburg.  Lightcap, who was a triple short of the cycle, belted a three-run homer in Kutztown's six-run third inning.  He added RBI singles in the fifth and eighth innings.  Kranz was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Craig was 2-for-5 and McCardell was 2-for-6.  Scott Kacelowicz (fr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) hit a two-run homer in the third.  Five pitchers took the mound for KU, striking out a combined 14 Huskie batters.  Matt Keller (sr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) started and went three innings, striking out four. Garrison Rausch (jr. Allentown/Parkland) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, fanning two, for the win.
