       FRI 3/9-SAT 3/10 — NCAA Championships

16th/32 Joe Kemmerer (jr. Mountaintop/Crestwood HS) won the NCAA Division II 133 lb. Championship at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.  Kemmerer claimed the title with a 1-0 decision over Jared Henning of the University of Central Oklahoma.  Earlier Saturday, he advanced to the finals with a 3-0 decision.  Kemmerer also had a major decision, 11-0 in the first round and a 8-2 decision in the quarterfinals.  Kemmerer is Kutztown’s first-ever wrestling national champion, the fifth Golden Bear athlete in school history to win an NCAA title, and just the third male athlete to do so.  Kutztown finished with 21.5 team points for 16th place, its highest finish at the NCAA Championship on record.  Central Oklahoma claimed its seventh national title with 124.5 points.  Host Nebraska-Kearney came in second with 108.5 and Nebraska-Omaha was third with 67.5 points.  Shippensburg, a fellow PSAC team, finished 13th with 33 points.  Mercyhurst came in just ahead of Kutztown in 15th with 23 points and Carson-Newman was just behind KU with 21 points.  Chris Chambers (so. Holland/Council Rock South) was defeated by major decision, 9-0, by the #3 ranked man in the country.  He bounced back with a 14-3 major decision.  In the second consolation round, Chambers was eliminated with a 12-8 loss.  Kevin Kalbach (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown), at 165 lbs, lost by a 9-5 decision in the first round.  He then lost by a 7-4 decision.  Kalbach entered the tournament as the #7 ranked wrester at 165 lbs., but was limited by a broken nose suffered during the East Regional two weeks ago.

SAT 3/10-SAT 3/17 — at Savannah Invitational (Savannah, GA)

SAT 3/10 — California (PA) 10, Kutztown 9 - The Vulcans handed the Golden Bears their first loss of the season, 10-9.  Jeff Craig (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run.  Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.  Sean Bond (sr. Malvern/Great Valley) went 3-for-5 and scored a run. 

SUN 3/11 — Kutztown 18, California (PA) 9 - The Golden Bears exploded for 10 runs in the top of the 8th inning to defeat California (PA), 18-9. Down 8-3 in the 5th innings, Ryan Loper (sr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) hit a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 8-6.  With one out in the top of the 8th, the Golden Bears took advantage of Cal errors and scored 10 runs.  Loper was 3-for-6 on the afternoon with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored.  Bond was 3-for-6 with four RBI, 2 runs scored and a stolen base. Matt Kulbacki (fr. Hershey/Hershey) was 3-for-5 with three RBI, two stolen bases and a run.  Derick Reis (jr. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) got the win, pitching 4.2 innings in relief and striking out three.

SUN 3/11 — Kutztown 9, Skidmore 0 – The KU men’s tennis team opened its spring season with a 9-0 win over Skidmore.  Santiago Baquerizo (so. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) and Lukas Labitsch (so. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won #1 doubles, 8-1.  Lukas Beman (sr. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) and Rubens Vianna (jr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won #2 doubles, 8-5 and Somdeep Appineni (sr. Hyderabad, INDIA) and Gernot Gruss (fr. Rheinland Pfalz, GERMANY) won #3 doubles, 8-5.  In singles play, Baquerizo defeated his opponent, 6-1, 6-4, at #1.  Labitsch won #2, 6-3, 6-3.  Appineni won 7-5, 6-3 at #3 singles.  Gruss won at #4 singles, 6-1, 6-1.  Beman defeated his opponents at #5 singles, 6-4, 6-4 and Vianna won #6, 6-2, 6-2.

FRI 3/9 — Newberry 15, Kutztown 4 (6 inn.) - Newberry scored seven runs in the sixth inning to break the game open.  KU answered with two in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough to avoid the mercy rule and lost 15-4 in six innings.  Adriane Willmer (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 3-for-4 and Ashley Fitzgerald (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) 2-for-3, while Maria Schiavo (fr. Old Forge/Old Forge) drove in two runs for KU.

Armstrong Atlantic State 10, Kutztown 4 - Armstrong Atlantic jumped out to a 6-2 lead after three innings to defeat Kutztown 10-4.  KU cut it to 6-4 on a two-run homer by Steph Denlinger (so. Harleysville/Souderton) in the fifth, but the Pirates scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win. Denlinger finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. 

SAT 3/10 — Kutztown 7, Belmont Abbey 5 - Denlinger belted two home runs in the 7-5 win over Belmont Abbey.  She hit a three-run homer in the first inning and then hit a solo shot in the fourth.  Kim Morrison (so. Newmarket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) also hit a solo home run in the fifth. 

Francis Marion 4, Kutztown 3 (8 inn.) - Francis Marion scored two runs in the top of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie.  Kutztown could get only one run back in the bottom of the eighth to lose 4-3.  Kaitlin Arbogast (fr. Ambler/Wissahickon) went the distance for KU, striking out 12. 

SUN 3/11 — Catawba 8, Kutztown 7 (8 inn.) - Kutztown scored five runs in the top of the 8th, including two home runs, to break a 2-2 tie. However, Catawba came back and scored six runs in the bottom of the 8th for the win.  Morrison, Denlinger, Krista Cameron (so. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) and Lindsay Bennett (jr. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) each had homers in the game.  Arbogast started the game and struck out 12.

USC-Aiken 3, Kutztown 1 - Kutztown could only score one run on a Fitzgerald home run and lost to USC-Aiken, 3-1. Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) pitched a complete game and struck-out six.
