Kemmerer (jr. Mountaintop/Crestwood HS)
won the NCAA Division II 133 lb. Championship at the
University of Nebraska-Kearney. Kemmerer
claimed the title with a 1-0 decision over Jared Henning of
the University of Central Oklahoma. Earlier Saturday, he
advanced to the finals with a 3-0 decision.
Kemmerer
also had a major decision, 11-0 in the first round and a 8-2
decision in the quarterfinals.
Kemmerer
is Kutztown’s first-ever wrestling national champion, the
fifth Golden Bear athlete in school history to win an NCAA
title, and just the third male athlete to do so. Kutztown
finished with 21.5 team points for 16th
place, its highest finish at the NCAA Championship on
record. Central Oklahoma claimed its seventh national title
with 124.5 points. Host Nebraska-Kearney came in second
with 108.5 and Nebraska-Omaha was third with 67.5 points.
Shippensburg, a fellow PSAC team, finished 13th with 33
points. Mercyhurst came in just ahead of Kutztown in 15th
with 23 points and Carson-Newman was just behind KU with 21
points.
Chris
Chambers (so. Holland/Council Rock South)
was defeated by
major decision, 9-0, by the #3 ranked man in the country.
He bounced back with a 14-3 major decision. In the second
consolation round,
Chambers
was eliminated with a 12-8 loss.
Kevin Kalbach (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown),
at 165 lbs,
lost by
a 9-5 decision in the first round. He then lost by a 7-4
decision.
Kalbach
entered the tournament as the #7 ranked wrester at 165 lbs.,
but was limited by a broken nose suffered during the East
Regional two weeks ago.

- The Golden Bears exploded for 10 runs in the top of the
8th inning to defeat California (PA), 18-9. Down 8-3 in the
5th innings,
Ryan Loper (sr.
Boiling
Springs/Cumberland Valley)
hit a
three-run homer to cut the deficit to 8-6. With one out in
the top of the 8th, the Golden Bears took advantage of Cal
errors and scored 10 runs.
Loper
was 3-for-6 on the afternoon with a home run, four RBI and
two runs scored.
Bond was
3-for-6 with four RBI, 2 runs scored and a stolen base.

3-for-5 with three RBI, two stolen bases and a run.
Derick Reis

innings to defeat Kutztown 10-4. KU cut it to 6-4 on a

fifth, but the Pirates scored four times in the bottom of
the fifth to secure the win.

belted two home
runs in the 7-5 win over Belmont Abbey. She hit a three-run
homer in the first inning and then hit a solo shot in the
fourth.

- Francis Marion scored two runs in the top of the eighth to
break a 2-2 tie. Kutztown could get only one run back in
the bottom of the eighth to lose 4-3.

went the distance for KU, striking out 12.
SUN 3/11 — Catawba 8, Kutztown 7 (8 inn.)
- Kutztown scored five runs in the top of the 8th, including
two home runs, to break a 2-2 tie. However, Catawba came
back and scored six runs in the bottom of the 8th for the
win.
