SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (21-2, 4-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 3/28 — KUTZTOWN 18, PHILADELPHIA 7 - Kutztown rapped out 20 hits en route to an 18-7 win over Philadelphia in the home opener.  Nate Kranz (so. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was 4-for-4 on the afternoon with four RBI and three runs scored.  Ryan Loper (sr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI.  Loper also picked up the win, pitching three innings and striking out four.  Darin Gorski (fr. Mount Joy/Donegal) started the game, going three innings and striking out five.  Jeff Craig (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) hit his second long ball of the season in the fifth inning.  He finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.  Mike McCardell (sr. West Chester/Henderson) went 3-for-3 and scored two runs.  Matt Dierolf (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 2-for-2 and knocked in a pair.

FRI 3/30 — KUTZTOWN 3, MILLERSVILLE 2 (8) - Kutztown came from behind to defeat Millersville, 3-2, in eight innings.  KU trailed by a score of 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.  Mike Kacelowicz (fr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) scored on a wild pitch with two outs and a 0-2 count on McCardell to tie the game up and take it to extra innings.  Kranz hit in the game winning run after the Marauders shortstop and second baseman failed to turn the double play.  Top hitters for Kutztown included Chad Lightcap (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) who went 2-for-4 and Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) who went 3-for-4.  Philip Rummel (jr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) pitched the entire game for the Golden Bears striking out three batters to pick up the win.

KUTZTOWN 5, MILLERSVILLE 2 - The Golden Bears scored four runs in the third inning en route to a 5-2 win over Millersville.  KU batted around in the bottom of the third inning and scored four runs.  Matt Keller (sr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) pitched five innings and struck out six for the win.  McCardell picked up his fourth save on the season.  Sean Bond (sr. Malvern/Great Valley) was 1-3 on the afternoon, knocking in two.

SAT 3/31 — Kutztown 3, Millersville 1 - Kutztown scored two runs in the third and one in the seventh to defeat Millersville, 3-1.  Lightcap was 2-for-3 in the game with a RBI.  Bond was 1-for-2 and scored two runs.  Mills pitched seven innings, striking out seven for the win.

Kutztown 5, Millersville 0 - Kutztown completed the weekend sweep of the Marauders with a 5-0 win.  Kutztown scored three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put away the game.  McCardell pitched a complete game two-hitter for the win.  Craig was 3-for-4 in the second game with two RBI.  Kranz went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI.

Women’s Golf

Last Week’s Action

SAT 3/31-SUN 4/1 - 1st/6 – Kutztown came in first at the McDaniel Invitational at the Links at Gettysburg.  KU shot 363-345-708 on the 5,825 yard course.  Allegheny placed second (368-343-744), Washington & Jefferson was third (377-363-740), McDaniel came in fourth (400-407-807), Gettysburg placed fifth (415-420-835) and Nazareth finished sixth (433-415-848).  Lauren Foulke (so. Kempton/Kutztown) was the Golden Bears’ top golfer on the par 72 course.  She tied for sixth and shot 96-83-179.  Tristin Suzenski (sr. Pottstown/St. Pius X) placed eighth (90-90-180), Bethany Adams (so. Schnecksville/Parkland) tied for ninth (90-91-181) and Angie Petak (jr. Brockway/Brockway) was 12th (87-95-182).  Holly Shubilla (sr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) only completed the course on the second day, shooting an 81.

TUE 3/27 — KUTZTOWN 9, PHILADELPHIA 0 – Kutztown blanked Philadelphia, 9-0.  Sanitago Baquerizo (so. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) won first singles, 6-2, 6-0.  Arpit Sharma (fr. Kolkata, INDIA) won second singles, 6-1, 6-2.  At third singles, Gernot Gruss (fr. Rheinland Pfalz, GERMANY) won 6-0, 6-2.  Lukas Beman (sr. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) defeated his opponent at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0.  Somdeep Appineni (sr. Hyderabad, INDIA) won 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles and Rubens Vianna (jr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0.  In doubles action, Lukas Labitsch (so. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) and Vianna won 8-1 in first.  In second doubles, Appineni and Gruss won 8-0 and at third doubles, Baquerizo and Sharma won 8-0.

THU 3/29 — Kutztown 9, West Chester 0 – KU won its first PSAC contest, 9-0, over West Chester.  Labitsch defeated his opponent at first singles, 6-1, 6-2.  Gruss won at second singles, 6-3, 6-1.  At third singles, Sharma won 6-2, 7-5.  Appineni won 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles.  Beman won 6-2, 6-0 at fifth singles and Vianna won 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.  In doubles, Labitsch and Sharma won first doubles, 8-2.  Vianna and Gruss won 8-3 at second doubles and Beman and Appineni won third doubles, 8-1.

SAT 3/31 — SLIPPERY ROCK 7, KUTZTOWN 2 – KU lost 7-2 to Slippery Rock.  Rohini Das (fr. Kolkata, INDIA) won first singles for Kutztown, 6-4, 7-5.  Kelsey Borak (fr. Allentown/Salisbury) won Kutztown’s second match at third singles, 6-3, 2-5, 10-6.

SAT 3/31 — at Terrapin Invitational — The Golden Bears competed at the Terrapin Invitational, hosted by Maryland.  Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) led the Kutztown women, placing second in the steeplechase with a time of 11:23.27, an NCAA Provisional time.  Lindsay Runkle (so. Port Carbon/Pottsville) finished third in the pole vault with a height of 10-6.  Kelly Strickland (fr. Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) was fourth (10-6).  Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) placed sixth in the 400m with a time of 58.23.  Jason Rebuck (fr. Southampton/William Tennent) led the KU men, finishing second in the discus with a throw of 143-3.  Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) placed fourth in the shot put, with a distance of 50-10 3/4.  Vonkurt Redley (jr. Elkins Park/Cheltenham) was sixth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 59.15.

Last Week’s Action

FRI 3/30— Kutztown 8, East Stroudsburg 1 - Krista Cameron (so. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) knocked in four runs as KU defeated ESU, 8-1.  Cameron hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to give KU a 7-1 lead.  Steph Denlinger (so. Harleysville/Souderton) hit a two-run home run in the third.  Cameron finished 3-for-4.  Denlinger went 3-for-3.  Maria Schiavo (fr. Old Forge/Old Forge) (3-for-5) and Dani Spalik (sr. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) (2-for-4) each had an RBI.  Kaitlin Arbogast (fr. Ambler/Wissahickon) pitched a complete game, striking out five, for the win.

Kutztown 8, East Stroudsburg 3 - Denlinger hit two home runs as KU defeated East Stroudsburg, 8-3.  Denlinger hit the first home run in the second inning to give KU a 2-0 lead.  ESU came back in the bottom of the third to tie the score.  Ashley Fitzgerald (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) and Denlinger hit back-to-back shots to open the fourth inning to take back the lead.  The Golden Bears added three extra runs in the sixth on a Cameron homer.  Denlinger finished 3-for-3. Cameron and Fitzgerald were each 2-for-3 on the afternoon.  Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) started the game for KU, going 2.1 innings.  Arbogast pitched the remaining 4.2 innings for the win.

SAT 3/31 — BLOOMSBURG 9, KUTZTOWN 0 (5) - Bloomsburg scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back to defeat Kutztown, 9-0.  The Huskies batted around plus one in the fourth inning and scored six runs to break the game open.  KU was held to only two hits, one by Denlinger, the other by Kathy Gregg (jr. Narvon/Garden Spot) Weidensaul started the game, going 2.1 innings.  Denlinger pitched the remaining 2.2 innings.

  KUTZTOWN 7, BLOOMSBURG 1 - Kutztown defeated Bloomsburg, 7-1.  The Golden Bears got on the board in the first inning, when Fitzgerald knocked in Adriane Willmer (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) with a single.  Bloomsburg tied the game in the top of the second.  In the fourth inning, Kutztown batted around and scored three runs to take the lead.  Sam Flowers hit a two-run homer.  Denlinger was intentionally walked her last three at bats.  Arbogast pitched the complete game for the win.
