SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (30-3, 11-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       MON 4/9 — KUTZTOWN 15, EAST STROUDSBURG 6 - Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) was 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead Kutztown to a 15-6 win over East Stroudsburg.  Kutztown, which moved up to #3 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, jumped out to an early lead with two runs in each of the first two innings.  Mills belted a three-run homer in KU's eight-run third inning that broke open the game.  Ryan Loper (sr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) was 2-for-2 with two RBI.  Matt Kulbacki (fr. Hershey/Hershey) was 2-for-3 with three runs.  Paul Cashin (sr. Collingdale/Monsignor Bonner) was 1-for-3 with three runs.  Dom Fantanarosa (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) was 1-for-1 with a three-run double in the sixth.  Philip Rummel (jr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) was the winning pitcher.  He allowed two hits with five strikeouts over four innings. 

KUTZTOWN 6, EAST STROUDSBURG 3 - Mike McCardell (sr. West Chester/Henderson) pitched a complete game as KU defeated ESU, 6-3.  Kutztown would take the lead in the fourth inning.  Bryan Riggins (jr. Glenmore/Downingtown West) drew a walk to start the inning. He scored on a sacrifice by Nate Kranz. The Golden Bears added two insurance runs in the sixth.  Sean Bond (sr. Malvern/Great Valley) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Kranz was 1-for-2 with two walks, a double and two RBI.  Chad Lightcap (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) had two RBI.  McCardell pitched seven innings and struck out eight.

TUE 4/10 — Kutztown 8, East Stroudsburg 4 - KU came from behind to win, 8-4.  Trailing 4-3 in the fifth inning, Bond led off with a pinch hit double. After Mike Kacelowicz (fr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) singled, Bond tied the score on Kranz’s RBI single.  Kacelowicz stole third and scored on a throwing error by ESU's catcher to give KU a 5-4 lead.  The Bears added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh.  Kranz finished 2-for-2 with two RBI.  Craig was 2-for-4 with three RBI.  Loper was 2-for-4 and Kacelowicz was 2-for-5 with two runs.  Darin Gorski (fr. Mount Joy/Donegal) got the win, going four innings with four strikeouts. 

Kutztown 5, East Stroudsburg 2 - KU completed the four-game sweep with a 5-2 victory over ESU.  Kutztown jumped to an early lead with four runs in the first inning.  Bond and Kranz led off with singles.  After McCardell hit a sacrifice fly to score Bond, Loper belted a two-run single.  He later scored on an error.  It was all the offense Matt Keller (sr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) would need to pick up the win. The senior scattered six hits and struck out four in the complete-game victory.  Kranz finished 2-for-4 with two runs and Loper was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

WED 4/11 — Kutztown 2, Shippensburg 1 - Mills pitched a complete-game five-hitter as Kutztown defeated Shippensburg 2-1, despite managing just one hit of its own.  Kutztown was held hitless until the seventh inning.  In the KU seventh, Garrison Rausch (jr. Allentown/Parkland) walked and stole second.  Bond hit a two-run single for the Golden Bears' only runs and sole hit on the afternoon.  Bond was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two walks.  Mills struck out three over nine innings.

FRI 4/13 — KUTZTOWN 8, WEST CHESTER 4 - The Golden Bears hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the third inning to come from behind and win 8-4.  Lightcap hit a two-run homer to start it.  Jeff Craig (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) and Loper also went yard in the frame.  Loper hit his second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, to put the game out of reach.  Loper finished 2-for-3 with four RBI.  Lightcap was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.  Rausch got the win.  He pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned, with six strikeouts.

KUTZTOWN 3, WEST CHESTER 2 – The Golden Bears won, 3-2 over West Chester, on a walk-off bases-loaded single by Kranz in the bottom of the seventh.  In KU's seventh, Kacelowicz drew a leadoff walk.  He went to third when Kulbacki reached first on an error as he attempted to sacrifice bunt.  Bond walked to load the bases.  Kranz then ripped a single into right field to score Kacelowicz for the game winner.  Kranz was 2-for-4, while Craig was 2-for-3 and Loper was 2-for-2.  McCardell was the winner.  He had two strikeouts.  Derick Reis (jr. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) started the game and finished with three Ks and allowed two runs in 5.1 innings. 

SAT 4/14 — West Chester 5, Kutztown 4 - The Golden Bears took a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning, but lost 5-4 at West Chester.  Kutztown's runs came in the fourth inning on a McCardell grand slam.  With the bases loaded by walks, McCardell hit the ball to left-center to give KU a 4-2 lead.  McCardell pitched the seventh inning, taking the loss.  Rummel started the game, going 3.1 innings.  McCardell finished 1-for-3 at the plate with four RBI.

Kutztown 9, West Chester 3 – The Golden Bears beat West Chester, 9-3.  McCardell hit his second grand slam of the afternoon in the third inning.  It is first time on record that a KU player has had two grand slams during a doubleheader.  Keller threw six innings for KU and struck out four for the win.  McCardell was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.  Loper went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.

Women’s Golf

Last Week’s Action

TUE 4/10 — at Ursinus Invitational — 1st/4 - Kutztown finished first at the Ursinus Invitational.  KU shot a team score of 349 on the par 72, 5,736 yard Rivercrest Golf Course.  Dickinson (398), Gettysburg (424) and Susquehanna (487) rounded out the team scores.  Holly Shubilla (sr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) was the top individual performer for KU, shooting an 85 for second place.  Angie Petak (jr. Brockway/Brockway) and Tristin Suzenski (sr. Pottstown/St. Pius X) tied for third with an 87.  Bethany Adams (so. Schnecksville/Parkland) and Lauren Foulke (so. Kempton/Kutztown) tied for sixth with a 90.

TUE 4/10 — Kutztown 9, Bloomsburg 0 – Kutztown blanked Bloomsburg, 9-0.  At first singles, Santiago Baquerizo (so. Hyderabad, INDIA) won, 6-7, 6-2, (10-8).  Lukas Labitsch (so. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won at second singles, 6-2, 6-2.  Gernot Gruss (fr. Rheinland Pfalz, GERMANY) won at third singles, 6-4, 6-1.  Lukas Beman (sr. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) won at fourth singles 6-2, 6-4.  In fifth singles, Soomdeep Appineni Isr. Hyderabad, INDIA) defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-1, and Rubens Vianna (jr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won sixth singles 6-0, 6-2.  In doubles, Baquerizo and Labitsch won first doubles, 8-5.  At second doubles, Appineni and Beman defeated their opponents 8-3 and Gruss and Vianna won 8-0 at third doubles.

WED 4/11 — KUTZTOWN 9, EAST STROUDSBURG 0 – Kutztown swept East Stroudsburg 9-0.  Baquerizo won first singles, 6-2, 6-0.  Labitsch defeated his opponent at second singles, 6-2, 6-0.  At third singles, Gruss won 6-1, 6-0.  Appineni won at fourth singles 6-1, 6-0.  At fifth singles, Beman won 6-1, 6-0.  Vianna won sixth singles 6-0, 6-2.  In doubles, Baquerizo and Labitsch won first doubles, 8-2.  At second doubles, Appineni and Gruss defeated their opponents 8-5 and Beman and Vianna won 8-4 at third doubles.

TUE 4/10 — Bloomsburg 8 Kutztown 1 – Kutztown lost to Bloomsburg, 8-1.  Rohini Das (fr. Kolkata, INDIA) won first singles, 3-6, 6-3, (10-1), for Kutztown’s only point.

WED 4/11 — KUTZTOWN 5, EAST STROUDSBURG 3 – Kutztown won 5-3 over East Stroudsburg.  Das defeated her opponent at first singles, 6-2, 6-0.  Priya Pachkawde (jr Nasik, INDIA) won second singles, 6-1, 6-3.  At fourth singles, Kelsey Borak (fr. Allentown/Salisbury) won, 6-2, 6-2.  Pachkawde and Das won first doubles 8-4 and Sabrina Arnaud (fr. Pintendre, CANADA) and Borak won second doubles 8-6.

SAT 4/14 — Kutztown 6, Shippensburg 3 – Kutztown defeated Shippensburg, 6-3.  Das won first singles, 6-2, 6-0.  Pachkawde won at second singles, 6-2, 6-2.  At third singles, Arnaud won 6-0, 6-0.  Borak defeated her opponent at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-4.  Pachkawde and Das won first doubles 8-3 and Arnaud and Borak won second doubles 8-6.

FRI 4/13-SAT 4/14 — at West Chester Invitational — KU’s multi-event athletes competed at the West Chester invitational.  Trenton Branam (fr. Pennsbury/Pennsbury) finished first out of 11 athletes in the decathlon with 5,419 points.  Shane Riegel (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) came in second with 5,348 points and Tim Ohm (fr. Media/Penncrest) placed seventh with 4,732 points.  Rebecca Kerchak (so. Sinking Spring/Wilson) finished second out of five in the heptathlon with 3,413 points.

FRI 4/13-SAT 4/14 — at Bucknell Outdoor Classic

M: Highlights for the KU men included Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) who finished second in the shot put with an NCAA provision throw of 52-10 3/4.  Ian Clark (jr. Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) placed third in the decathlon with 5,623 points.  In the high jump, Cody Hartzler (so. Belleville/Indian Valley) came in sixth with a height of 6-4 1/4.  Brian Dodds (jr. Wyomissing/Wilson) placed seventh in the pole vault with a height of 14-9.   Cory Crider (fr. Mechanicsburg/Cedar Cliff) came in 11th in the 110-meter hurdles (15.62). 

W: Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) set a Kutztown record in the heptathlon, finishing third with 4,596 points.  It is also an NCAA provisional mark.  Marchand broke the old record of 4,584, set back in 2001 by Emily Foltz.  Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:19.50, an NCAA provisional performance.  In the 5,000, Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) finished 12th in 17:31.02, a NCAA provisional time.  The 4x100 relay of Corri Speakman (so. Reading/Exeter), Laura Deller (jr. York/Dallastown), Katie Quinn (so. Glenolden/Interboro) and Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) placed second in 49.50.  The 4x400 relay team of Deller, Quinn, Heather Spangenberg (fr. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) and Brooke McMurray (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) finished fifth in 4:00.59.  Quinn tied for seventh in the 100 (12.66) and placed eighth in the 200 (26.04).  Jessica Donovan (so. Newtown/Pennsbury) came in 10th in the 400 hurdles (1:07.10).  In the pole vault, Kelly Strickland (fr. Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) came in fifth (10-11 3/4),

Last Week’s Action

MON 4/9 — Kutztown 12, West Chester 0 (5 innings) Steph Denlinger (so. Harleysville/Souderton) hit a grand slam to blow open a 1-0 game en route to a 12-0 win over West Chester.  She finished 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.  Ashley Fitzgerald (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning.  She went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.  Krista Cameron (so. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) was 2-for-2 with two doubles and scored two runs.  Lindsay Bennett (jr. Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun) added a two-run double.  Kaitlin Arbogast (fr. Ambler/Wissahickon) pitched five innings, striking out seven for the win.  She retired the first 12 batters she faced.   

Kutztown 13, West Chester 4 (5 innings) Fitzgerald hit two home runs, including a grand slam, as KU won 13-4 at West Chester.  Fitzgerald hit her long balls in the midst of a four-run second and five-run fourth.  She finished the second game 2-for-4 with six RBI.  Cameron was 3-for-3 with a home run, double and three RBI.  Denlinger was 2-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI.  Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) pitched the complete game, striking out four.

TUE 4/10 — Kutztown 2, Millersville 1 Arbogast tossed a complete-game one hitter in a 2-1 KU win.  Denlinger hit a solo home run.  In the seventh, Bennett drew a leadoff walk and went to third on Dani Spalik's (sr. Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) double.  Two batters later, Maria Schiavo (fr. Old Forge/Old Forge) drove in the winning run with a single.  Adriane Willmer (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 2-for-4 and Spalik was 2-for-2.

Kutztown 12, Millersville 6 – Kutztown rapped out 15 hits, including four homers, for a 12-6 win over the Marauders.  Kutztown had nine extra base hits.  Denlinger became the first Golden Bear with 20 home runs in a season, breaking the PSAC single-season record of 19 set last season by Lock Haven.  She finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.  Tami Wambold (fr. Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) was 2-for-4 with a pair of homers and three RBI.  Willmer was 2-for-5 with a home run.  Cameron was 2-for-4 with two RBI.  Fitzgerald finished 2-for-4 with a triple.  Weidensaul was the beneficiary of KU's offense.  She struck out four over seven innings for the win.  KU’s five homers on the afternoon brought the total to 54 this season, tying KU's single-season record set last year. 

FRI 4/13 — KUTZTOWN 9, MANSFIELD 1 (6) – KU defeated Mansfield 9-1.  KU had a five run fifth inning to break the game open.  The Golden Bears invoked the eight-run rule with two more runs in the sixth inning.  Schiavo was 3-for-3 with two RBI.  Morrison was 2-for-3 and Willmer was 2-for-4 and scored two runs.  Denlinger had a single and was walked three times.  Arbogast pitched six innings, striking out seven.  

KUTZTOWN 4, MANSFIELD 3 (8) – Kutztown battled back from being down 3-0 to win 4-3 over Mansfield.  After scoring one run in the fourth, the Golden Bears tied to score on a two-run double by Fitzgerald in the fifth.  With the score tied in the eighth, Wambold walked to lead off the bottom of the inning.  She was replaced by pinch runner Liana Daczka (fr, Manchester/Northeastern)Daczka advanced two bases on a Mountaineer wild pitch.  Willmer hit the game winning single for the 4-3 win.  Fitzgerald was 2-for-2 with two RBI.  Kim Morrison (so. Newmarket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) scored two runs.  Denlinger was walked all four times she stepped to the plate.  Weidensaul pitched all eight innings.  She had four strikeouts.

SAT 4/14 — Kutztown 3, Bloomsburg 2 – Three runs in the first inning were enough as KU defeated the Huskies, 3-2.  Willmer started the afternoon with a double.  Schiavo bunted Willmer to third.  Morrison hit an RBI single for the first run.  Fitzgerald singled to score Morrison Denliger also scored after an error by the Bloomsburg leftfielder for the 3-0 lead.  Arbogast pitched seven innings and struck out eight for the win.  Willmer finished 2-for-4.  Schiavo was 2-for-3.  Denlinger walked three times.

Kutztown 5, Bloomsburg 2 – Kutztown defeated Bloomsburg, 5-2.  Bloomsburg scored first, but KU cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning.  A four-run sixth inning gave KU the lead.  Morrison singled and Denlinger walked to start the inning.  Fitzgerald doubled to knock in Morrison and tie the game.  Cameron singled, driving in Denlinger as the go-ahead run.  Arbogast pitched three innings of relief for the win.  Weidensaul started the game, going four innings.  Morrison was 2-for-4 and scored two runs.  Fitzgerald finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.  Denligner was walked once.  With her three walks from game one, she has 31 on the season, breaking the KU single-season record of 27 set by Kim Yost in 1987.

KU is now in sole possession of first place in the PSAC East with a 13-1 record.
