SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (45-5, 19-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       MON 4/30 — Kutztown 10, Albright 0 – Kutztown University erupted for eight runs in the first inning, en route to a 10-0 win over Albright College in the Baseballtown Classic at First Energy Stadium.  Kutztown sent 14 men to the plate and rapped out nine hits in the eight-run first inning.  Chad Lightcap (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) had two hits in the inning, a single in his first trip and a two-run double in his second.  He finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.  Garrison Rausch (jr. Allentown/Parkland) was 2-for-2, Dan Gavlick (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was 2-for-3 and Dom Fantanarosa (so. Coatesville/Coatesville) was 2-for-2.  Steve Craig (so. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) started for KU, pitching four innings with three strikeouts.  Ryan Loper (sr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) got the win, pitching two innings of relief.  Ryan Cassidy (fr. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) went the final three innings, with four strikeouts, for the save.   KU's pitchers combined to allow just three Lion hits.

THU 5/3-FRU 5/5 — at PSAC Championships

THU 5/3 — Kutztown 2, Shippensburg 0 - Matt Keller (sr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) took a no-hitter into the ninth inning to lead Kutztown to a 2-0 win in the PSAC baseball championship.  Keller struck out seven and walked one, hit one and two reached on KU errors, facing just 32 batters.  Rausch was 3-for-3 with a run scored, Sean Bond (sr. Malvern/Great Valley) was 2-for-3 with a run scored.  The win was the 45th for Kutztown a new single-season record for victories.

East Stroudsburg 9, Kutztown 5 - Kutztown's 16-game winning streak was snapped with a 9-5 loss to East Stroudsburg.  The Warriors erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the 3-3 game open.  Philip Rummel (jr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) started the game, going five innings in the loss.

FRI 5/4 — California (PA) 4, Kutztown 3 - The Golden Bears were eliminated, 4-3, by California (PA).  Nate Kranz (so. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was hit by a pitch once, his KU career record tying 43rd time being hit by a pitch.  Mike McCardell (sr. West Chester/Henderson) went the distance for Kutztown, striking out 11 and walking none.  Jeff Craig (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) and Loper were both 2-for-4.

THU 5/3-FRI 5/4 — NCAA EAST REGIONALS

THU 5/3 — KUTZTOWN 5, BENTLEY 0 - Kutztown defeated Bentley in the first round of the NCAA East Regionals.  The Golden Bears swept all three doubles matches.  Santiago Baquerizo (so. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) and Lukas Labitsch (so. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won 8-0 at #1, Lukas Beman (sr. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) and Rubens Vianna (jr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won 8-3 at #2, and Gernot Gruss (fr. Rheinland Pfalz, GERMANY) and Somdeep Appineni (sr. Hyderabad, INDIA) won 8-3 at #3.  Gruss won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at #4 singles, then Appineni finished off his opponent in the fifth seed match, 6-0, 6-1, to complete KU's victory.

FRI 5/4 — MERCY 5, KUTZTOWN 3 - Mercy won a three-set thriller at sixth singles to secure a 5-3 win over Kutztown in round two.  Mercy snapped Kutztown's streak of five-straight East Regional championships.  The Flyers swept the three doubles points.  Kutztown fought back in singles, winning at seeds one, two and five.  Baquerizo, 6-1, 6-1, and Labitsch, 6-1, 6-4, won at the top two seeds, while Appineni won at #5, 6-1, 7-6.

THU 5/3-SAT 5/5 — at PSAC Championships

M: 8th/14 - The Golden Bear men placed eighth at the PSAC Championships at Shippensburg University.  KU scored 28.5 points.  Lock Haven edged Shippensburg for the men's crown, 139-138.  Slippery Rock was third at 134.  Cheyney finished seventh with 45 points, while Clarion was behind KU in ninth with 21.  Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) highlighted KU's effort, winning the shot put with a distance of 53-0 3/4, an NCAA provisional throw.  Tyson placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 147-10.  The trio of Justin Gibbs (jr. Pottstown/Pottstown) (14.82), VonKurt Redley (jr. Elkins Park/Cheltenham) (15.18) and Cory Crider (fr. Mechanicsburg/Cedar Cliff) (15.79) placed fourth, seventh and eighth in the 110 hurdles.  Joe Haughey (sr. Richboro/Council Rock South) came in seventh in the 3,000 steeplechase.  Brian Dodds (jr. Wyomissing/Wilson) tied for sixth in the pole vault with a height of 14-2 and Cody Hartzler (so. Belleville/Indian Valley) finished seventh in the high jump with a height of 6-2 3/4.  In the men's decathlon, Shane Reigel (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) finished as the top KU athlete with 5,879 points to finish in eighth place.  In the hammer throw, Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover, NJ/Newtown) finished eighth with a throw of 143-6. 

W: 2nd/14 - Kutztown finished second at the PSAC Championships and put three KU records in the books.  The Golden Bear women scored 115.5 team points, behind only Slippery Rock, which won the team title with 189.5 points.  Lock Haven was third with 112.  Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) won the heptathlon and set a KU record.  Marchand, who had set the record earlier this season with 4,596 points, shattered her mark by winning the event with 4,698 points.  She won four of the seven events.  Rebecca Kerchak (so. Sinking Spring/Wilson) finished eighth with 3,680.  Desiree Bower (sr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a KU record time of 11:06.31, shattering the old record of 11:13.54 set by Megan Seefeldt in 2001.  The 4x100 team of Corri Speakman (so. Reading/Exeter), Katie Quinn (so. Glenolden/Interboro), Laura Deller (jr. York/Dallastown) and Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) set a KU record with a time of 48.55 (48.56, 2001) and finished fourth.  Marchand, Quinn and Tor-Agbidye were also joined by Brooke McMurray (so. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) on the fourth-place 4x400 relay team.  Marchand placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 18-1, one inch short of the KU record (Andrea Sellitti, 2001) and was seventh in the 100 hurdles (15.35).  Deller came in seventh in the long jump with a distance of 17-8.  McMurray earned All-PSAC with a third place showing in the high jump with a height of 5-5 3/4.  Quinn was second in the 200 (25.52) and third in the 100 (12.38) to earn All-PSAC honors in both races.  Tor-Agbidye was third in the 400 (57.02) to earn all-conference honors, while also placing sixth in the 200 (26.18).  Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) won the 10,000 (37:16.46) and placed second in both the 3,000 (10:16.53) and 5,000 (17:35.81), with NCAA provisional times in all three races.  Joanna Horstmann (so. Downingtown/Downingtown West) placed third in the 800 (2:17.09).  Rachel Weigle (fr. Red Lion/Red Lion) earned All-PSAC honors by finishing third in the pole vault with a height of 10-11 1/2.  Kelly Strickland tied for fourth in the pole vault with a height of 10-5 1/2.  Michelle Hughes (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) was sixth in the hammer (131-3) seventh in the shot put (38-8 1/4).

THU 5/3-SAT 5/5 — PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

THU 5/3 —  KUTZTOWN 6, EAST STROUDSBURG 1 - Ashley Fitzgerald (so. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) was 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Kutztown to a 6-1 won over East Stroudsburg in its frist game of the PSAC Championship.  Krista Cameron (so. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) hit a two-run single for KU to take a 4-0 lead in the third.  Cameron hit a solo home run in the fifth.  Kaitlin Arbogast (fr. Ambler/Wissahickon) pitched a four-hit complete game for the win.  Cameron was 2-for-4 with three RBI.  Adriane Willmer (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

FRI 5/4 — KUTZTOWN 3, LOCK HAVEN 0 - Arbogast pitched a two-hitter and Kutztown scratched across three unearned runs to defeat #2 Lock Haven, 3-0.  Arbogast struck out nine batters in the complete game.  Kutztown had five hits by five players.  Steph Denlinger (so. Harleysville/Souderton), Kathy Gregg (jr. Narvon/Garden Spot) and Cameron had KU’s RBI.

SAT 5/5 — LOCK HAVEN 7, KUTZTOWN 5 (15 innings) – Lock Haven hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 15th inning to win 7-5 win over Kutztown.  Kutztown led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, and Arbogast got the first two outs before Lock Haven scored three runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings.  Arbogast went 14.2 innings, allowing 17 hits and seven runs.  She struck out 11.  Denlinger was 3-for-7 with an RBI, her PSAC single-season record 69th of the season.  Gregg was 4-for-6.

LOCK HAVEN 5, KUTZTOWN 2 - Lock Haven defeated Kutztown 5-2 to win its second straight PSAC Softball Championship.  KU scored its runs in the seventh on a two-run home run by Cameron, her 16th of the season.  Rachel Weidensaul (jr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) took the loss.  She struck out three over six innings.  The Golden Bears finish second in the PSAC Championship for the fourth time, the first since 1996.
