Kutztown 4,
Shippensburg 3 - Jeff Craig (sr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) and
Matt Dierolf (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) drove in two runs apiece to lead Kutztown to a 4-3
win over Shippensburg in game 1 of the NCAA Division II North
Atlantic Baseball Regional Thursday afternoon at Kutztown
University. Craig hit a two-run home run
in the third to tie the score at two. With two out and runners
on second and third, Dierolf hit a two-run single to knock in
Mike McCardell (sr. West Chester/Henderson) and Ryan Loper
(sr. Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley).
Craig finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Dierolf was
2-for-3 with two RBI. Matt Keller (sr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood)
(6-1)
pitched 7.1 innings for the win. He gave up three runs, one
earned, and struck out eight. Darin Gorski (fr. Mount
Joy/Donegal)
relieved Keller with one out and a runner on third in the eighth.
On his first pitch, Ship's batter lined to Sean Bond (sr.
Malvern/Great Valley) at third, who doubled
off the runner to end the threat. McCardell pitched the
ninth inning, striking out two, for his fifth save of the season.
FRI 5/18 - Kutztown 6,
California (PA) 1
- Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) pitched a
complete game, giving up one run and scattering seven hits to lead
Kutztown to a 6-1 win over California (PA) in game six of the NCAA
Division II North Atlantic Baseball Regional Friday afternoon.
Mills struck out three to improve to
a perfect 7-0 on the season. Nate Kranz (so. Silver
Spring/Cumberland Valley) led KU's 16 hits, going
4-for-5 with an RBI and a hit by pitch. It was the 44th time
the sophomore's been hit by a pitch, breaking KU's career record
(Clay Kucklick, 2000-03). Bond went 3-for-6 and Chad Lightcap
(sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 3-for-4. Loper was 2-for-5 and scored two
runs.
SAT 5/19 - Kutztown 7, Slippery
Rock 3 - McCardell struck
out 13 batters in a complete-game effort, to lead Kutztown to a 7-3
win over Slippery Rock in game seven of the NCAA Division II North
Atlantic Baseball Regional Saturday morning. The victory, which was KU's
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record-tying 48th this
season, sends the Golden Bears (48-5) to the championship game on
Sunday. McCardell (7-2) allowed eight hits
and three runs, while walking none. KU was led at the plate by
Loper, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a
two-run home run in the third. Craig was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Kranz was 2-for-4 with two runs and Bond was 2-for-5 with his
first home run of the season.
SUN 5/20 - Kutztown 9, West
Chester 1 - Philip Rummel (jr. Exeter/West-Mont
Christian) pitched a complete game to lead Kutztown University to a 9-1
win over West Chester in the Championship Game of the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional.
Rummel (8-1) gave up only one run,
while scattering eight hits and striking out six. The Golden
Bears were led at the plate by North Atlantic Regional
Tournament MVP Loper, who was
3-for-4 with two RBI. Lightcap was 3-for-5. Bond,
McCardell and Mike Kacelowicz (fr. Orwigsburg/Blue
Mountain) had two hits apiece. Kranz (SS), Loper
(OF), Craig
(OF), Lightcap (DH) and McCardell (P) were all named to the
All-Tournament Team.
With the victory, Kutztown wins the North Atlantic Regional Title and
earns a berth in the
2007 NCAA Division II "World Series" in Montgomery, Ala., May
25-June 1. Kutztown will face the winner of the Central
Region, Nebraska-Omaha, on Friday,
May 25 at a time to be determined at Riverwalk Stadium in
Montgomery. Kutztown (49-5)
has
won the regional tournament three previous times (2001, 2002, 2004*).
Kutztown has won the regional title each of the three times it has
hosted the tournament, having won on its home field in 2001, 2002
and now 2007.
The Golden Bears
set a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record for wins in a
season, passing the previous mark of 48 wins by Slippery Rock in
2003.
