Cross Country

Last Week’s Action

       FRI 9/28 - Women 21st at Paul Short Invitational — Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) led Kutztown to a 21st-place finish in the championship race at the prestigious Paul Short Run at Lehigh University. KU was the highest finishing Division II team in the championship race, which featured Division I teams and ranked Division II and III squads. The Golden Bears are ranked No. 13 in Division II. Horstmann ran a time of 21:56, KU's fastest time ever at Lehigh's 6K course, breaking Megan Seefeldt's 2001 time of 22:04. Horstmann finished 59th overall. Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Reg.) placed 117th with a time of 22:44, the fastest time at Lehigh for a KU freshman. Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) placed 145th (23:01), followed by Hailey Dell (jr. Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) (172nd, 23:22) and Maureen Watson (so. Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) (176th, 23:24).  Rounding out KU's top seven were Keri Brown (fr. Southampton, N.J./Seneca) (213th, 23:53) and Jolene Collins (so. Annville/Palmyra) (245th, 24:20.

 

       FRI 9/28 - Men 6th at Paul Short Invitational — KU's men were sixth in the men's White race at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University. In the White race, which consists of unranked Division II and III teams, KU placed sixth with 247 points, second among Division II teams. Pat Bone (sr. Doylestown/Central Bucks East) led KU with a time of 26:45 for a 30th place finish on the 8K course. Tom Mooney (fr. Churchville/Council Rock South) finished with a time of 26:48 for 35th place. Tim Ballingall (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown East) (48th, 27:17), Ben Loht (so. Lewistown/Indian Valley) (52nd, 27:24) and Pat McKeever (sr. Midland Park/Midland Park) (82nd, 27:48) rounded out KU's top five. Also running for KU were Jon Pyne (jr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) (88th, 27:51) and Kevin Rodgers (fr. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) (90th, 27:52).

Last Week’s Action

       TUE 9/25 - Bloomsburg 6, KU 1 — KU, which was named the No. 1 team in Division II earlier in the day on Tuesday, suffered its first loss of the season to Bloomsburg, which is ranked No. 2. KU's lone score came from Kelley Healey (jr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), off an assist from Laura Wieder (sr. Emmaus/Emmaus) at the 56:13 mark. Sam Flowers (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) had 11 saves in the cage for KU.

 

       SAT 9/29 - KU 2, Shippensburg 1 — Heather Hoxter (sr. Glenmore/Octorara) scored the game-winning goal with 3:03 left as KU defeated No. 6 Shippensburg Saturday in a PSAC contest. Anne Waapu (r-fr. Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) had the game-tying goal at the 25:43 mark, making it 1-1. Flowers made six saves for the Golden Bears (11-1, 7-1 PSAC). Lyndsay Butler (jr. Annandale/Summit) recorded the assist on Hoxter’s goal.

Last Week’s Action

       TUE 9/26 - KU 1, HOLY FAMILY 1 (2OT)— Jake Young (so. Blandon/Fleetwood) scored his second goal of the season early in the second half as KU collected a 1-1 tie after two overtimes against Holy Family at Keystone Field. Young, off an assist from Keegan Moyer (fr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood), scored at the 58:06 mark to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead, but Holy Family turned on the offense in the second half of the non-conference matchup, posting 11 of its 15 shots in regulation and scoring the equalizer with 18:44 left. KU keeper Matthew Fredericks (so. Montdale/Lakeland) made 12 saves in the contest.

 

       SAT 9/29 - Lock Haven 2, KU 0 — KU couldn’t overcome two early goals in its 2-0 loss to Lock Haven Saturday. Lock Haven had to make just one save for the shutout. KU managed just eight shots in the PSAC contest, while Lock Haven had 17. Fredericks made three saves for KU.

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 9/29-MON 10/1 - at ITA Regionals (at Bloomsburg) — Santiago Baquerizo (jr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) and Arpit Sharma (so. Kolkata, INDIA) each won two matches in their respective brackets to qualify for competition Monday at the ITA Regionals at Bloomsburg. The Kutztown University men's tennis team also advanced two doubles teams to the finals Monday. Baquerizo and Lukas Labitsch (jr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won two matches in the A-Doubles bracket to advance to the final. In the B-Doubles bracket, KU's Sharma and Rubens Vianna (sr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) also won two matches to set themselves up in a final match Monday.

       WED 9/26 - Philadelphia Univ. 7, KU 2 —  Rohini Das (so. Kolkata, INDIA) helped KU win two matches, but it wasn’t enough as Philadelphia University won 7-2 at Kutztown. Das won the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-4 and teamed with Barbara Joerns (so. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-6.

Women’s Volleyball (17-4, 3-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       TUE 9/25 - Shippensburg 3, KU 0 — KU lost 3-0 to Shippensburg in a battle for first place in the PSAC East, falling 30-28, 30-22 and 33-31. Erin Waters (sr. Waymart/Western Wayne) led KU with 13 kills and five blocks. Nicole Biuso (sr. Centereach, N.Y./Ward Melville) had 29 digs. Lindsay Confer (sr. Wingate/Bald Eagle) notched nine kills and 10 digs. Austin Kinney (jr. Landisville/Hempfield) had 18 assists and 11 digs.

 

       FRI 9/28-SAT 9/29 - PSAC Crossover at Millersville

       FRI 9/28 -  KU 3, Slippery Rock 2 — KU held on to defeat Slippery Rock with games scores of 23-30, 30-25, 30-24, 25-30 and 15-9. KU was led by Waters' 19 kills and three blocks. Kaitlyn Cunliffe (fr. Levittown/Pennsbury) had 13 kills and 14 digs, while Kelsey Nester (fr. Catasauqua/Catasauqua) had 13 kills and two blocks. Biuso had 32 digs, and Kinney recorded 64 assists and 17 digs.

 

       FRI 9/28 -  vs. Indiana (Pa.) — KU won two matches at the PSAC Crossover for the first time by defeating Indiana (Pa.) in four games, 30-27, 30-27, 25-30 and 30-27. Waters led again with 18 kills, while Nester had 11 and five blocks. Confer tallied 11 kills and 20 digs, while Biuso had 40 digs and Kinney recorded 53 assists.

 

       SAT 9/29 -  vs. California (Pa.) — KU dropped three consecutive games, 30-26, 30-26 and 30-19, in a loss to California (Pa.). Waters finished with 10 kills and Biuso had 22 digs. Kinney had 31 assists and 17 digs.
