WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (2-3, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       TUE 11/27 - Goldey-Beacom 88, KU 84 — Sean McKeon (sr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) led four players in double-digits, but KU’s second-half rally came up short as Goldey-Beacom won the non-conference contest. McKeon finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. The 6-foot-10 forward also hit three 3-pointers. Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) followed with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) and Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) each had 15 and 14 points, respectively.

       THU 11/29 - UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES 87, KU 84 (OT) — The University of the Sciences erased a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat KU in overtime at Keystone Hall. Ben led KU with 25 points. Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) scored 17, while Dennis had 15 and Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) posted 13. In the extra period, the score was tied four times before USP hit two free throws with 36 seconds left for a 84-82 lead.

       SAT 12/1 - Shippensburg 79, KU 64 — Edwards scored a season-high 19 points, but KU lost at Shippensburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover. Shippensburg built a comfortable lead early, but KU battled back to cut it to three points when Max Foye (so. Mountaintop/Crestwood) nailed a 3-pointer to make it 28-25. However, the Red Raiders went on a 12-0 run that allowed them close out the half with a 40-25 lead. Foye finished with 10 points, while Dennis and McKeon each had nine points. Mark Bower (jr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) came off the bench for the Golden Bears to pull down 10 rebounds and score five points.

       SUN 12/2 - KU 69, Lock Haven 64 Edwards scored a career-high 24 points and hit four 3-pointers to help KU defeat Lock Haven. KU trailed 35-28 at halftime, but outscored the Eagles 41-29 in the second half of their PSAC crossover. Edwards hit 6-of-11 shots from the field and made 8-of-11 free throws. He also hit two critical 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes to keep Lock Haven in check. Dennis posted 15 points for KU, while Woodlin chipped in with 13. Foye pulled down 12 rebounds and had five points. Lock Haven cut KU’s lead to two points with 9:02 left and to one point with 3:50 left, but in both cases, Edwards hit 3-pointers to extend the Golden Bears’ lead.

Women’s Basketball (3-3, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       THU 11/29 - KU 57, UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES 50 KU defeated the University of Sciences in non-conference action at Keystone Hall. Melissa McQuade (fr. Pittsburgh/Shaler) scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and had five assists to lead KU. Lara Dellegrotti (jr. Berwick/Berwick) added 11 points, while Katie Dovey (so. Willow Hill/Fannett-Metal) led all players with 11 rebounds.

       SAT 12/1 - Shippensburg 62, KU 46 — KU fell behind early at Shippensburg and never recovered as the Golden Bears lost the PSAC crossover matchup. Mercedes Van Wagner (sr. Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) scored a team-high 12 points and reigning PSAC East Rookie of the Week McQuade had 11 points. Both pulled down seven rebounds for KU.

       SUN 12/2 - Lock Haven 63, KU 48 — Turnovers hurt KU as Lock Haven picked up a win in a PSAC crossover. KU was led by Rachel Weidensaul (sr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan), who had a team-high 12 points. McQuade hit three 3-pointers for KU and finished with nine points.

Women’s Bowling (9-16)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 12/1-12/2 - 10th/17 at Jeanette Lee Invitational (Lawrenceville, Va.) Kayla Stamm (fr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) and Steph Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) led KU to three wins Saturday at the Jeanette Lee Invitational in Richmond, Va., en route to the Golden Bears’ 10th-place finish out of 17 teams. Stamm, with a high game of 202, averaged at 178.2, while Ray, whose high game was 200, averaged a 171. KU went 3-2 overall during Saturday’s traditional games. Stamm finished in 21st place out of 104 bowlers at the event. Jacquelyn Heimbach (jr. Easton/Easton) averaged a 161.5 Saturday, while Megan Jonigkeit (fr. Langhorne/Neshaminy) had a 149.7 average. Both bowlers competed in all six games for KU. KU opened the event with wins over No. 21 Bowie State (801-770) and Elizabeth City State (853-763). No. 12 Adelphi defeated KU 892-758 and Howard won 819-763 before the Golden Bears closed the day with an 840-759 win over Virginia State. KU also posted 733 points in the fourth game, which happened to be a bye for the Golden Bears. The statistics still count toward their season totals. KU defeated North Carolina Central University 620-483 for its only win in Sunday’s baker games. Their four losses, however, came to ranked teams, three in the top 15. No. 6 Fairleigh Dickinson handed KU its first loss of the day 672-633 before No. 7 New Jersey City University won 823-664 and No. 28 Hampton won 680-646. The Golden Bears closed out the day with a 725-699 loss to No. 12 Adelphi.

Men’s Swimming (3-1, 1-1 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 12/1-12/2— 3rd/9 at Franklin & Marshall Invite  Nicholas Williams (fr. Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) won two individual events as KU finished third at the Franklin and Marshall Invitational. KU posted 520.5 points as Rowan University took first with 680 points, while Franklin and Marshall College had 662. Williams was the only Golden Bear to nab a first-place finish at the invitational, landing the top spot in the 200 free (1:42.85). Sunday, in the third session, Williams won the 100 freestyle in a time of 47.71 seconds. Williams also helped KU pick up points Saturday when he and Scott Thomas (jr. Friedensburg/Blue Mountain) took second and third, respectively, in the 500 freestyle. Williams finished in 4:51.02 and Thomas in 4:55.30.

Women’s Swimming (4-2, 2-2 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 12/1-12/2 - 1st/10 at Franklin & Marshall Invite Ashley Singer (sr. Lititz/Warwick) and Steph Jeppesen (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) powered KU to finish in first place with 686.5 points at the Franklin and Marshall Invitational. KU beat out second-place Rowan (548) and third-place Franklin and Marshall (412). Singer and Jeppesen won a combined total of six individual events, with Jeppesen setting a new school record in the 200-yard breaststroke. Jeppesen’s 2:24.76 in the 200 breaststroke on Sunday handed her first place in the event and qualified her for the NCAA B-cut. Jeppesen also finished first in two individual events on Saturday, taking first in the 200 individual medley (2:13.35) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.72). On Saturday, Singer blew away the competition in the 500 freestyle by more than eight seconds, finishing with a time of 5:08.25. She also took first in the 200 freestyle with a 1:54.58. Sunday, she added another first-place victory with a win in the 100 freestyle. She finished the race in 53.68 seconds. Both Jeppesen and Singer helped the 200 and 400 medley relay teams finish first Saturday, as well as the 800 freestyle relay team. Allison Sheely (fr. Enola/Trinity) and Staci McGinty (sr. Jamison/Central Bucks East) were members of the winning 400 relay team, which finished in 4:04.01. Sheely and Casey Pollard (fr. Easton/Easton) teamed with Jeppesen and Singer in the 200 to finish in 1:51.86. The 800 freestyle relay team consisted of Singer, Jeppesen, McGinty and Jill Pantelides (sr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Prendergast). They won the event with a time of 7:58.69. Singer, Pantelides, Pollard and McGinty also teamed up to win the 400 free relay Sunday with a time of 3:39.27.

Indoor Track and Field

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 12/1 - KU at Bucknell Opener — Men: KU opened the season with 10 top-eight finishers at the Bucknell Opener. James Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) highlighted the meet with his NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 52-6½ in the shot put. The throw gave him third in the event, ahead of teammate Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion), who finished seventh with at throw of 49-5¾. Michael Kramer (fr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) and Devin Peterson (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) tied for fourth in the long jump with leaps of 21-11. Justin Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) took fifth in the pole vault at 15-3. Billy Boorse (sr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) took third in the 800 with a 1:57.15, while Kendall Dixon (so. Atglen/Octorara) finished fourth in the 400 at 50.3 seconds. Steve Hixon (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) ran the 500 in 1:07.93 to finish eighth, while in the 60 hurdles, Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham) finished in 8.40 seconds taking sixth. Hixon, Boorse, Dixon and Ian Clark (jr. Troy, N.H./Monadnock Regional) worked together to finish seventh in the 1,600 relay.

       Women: KU had five athletes finish in the top eight at the Bucknell Opener. Doofan Tor-Agbidye (so. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) had the best overall finish at the invitational for KU, taking second in the 400-meter run with a time of 59.08 seconds. Teammate Heather Spangenberg (so. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) finished eighth in the 400 in 1:01.72. KU placed three athletes in the pole vault competition. Kelly Strickland (so. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) tied for third with a vault of 10-10, while both Rachel Weigle (so. Red Lion/Red Lion) and Alison Wise (so. Denver/Garden Spot) tied for sixth with a jump of 10-4. Jessica Schlechter (so. Chalfont/Central Bucks South) also placed on the women’s side, taking seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:27.53.

Wrestling (3-0)

Last Week’s Action

       SUN 12/2 - at Penn State Open — David Zeek (so. Newtown/Council Rock North) ran off three straight wins for KU and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Penn State Open Sunday at State College. Zeek, wrestling in the 157-pound bracket, picked up a pin and two major decisions en route to a 3-2 record at the event. Kevin Bolinsky (fr. Ashland/North Schuylkill), at heavyweight, also found success at the Penn State Open, going 2-2. In all, KU had 15 wrestlers compete Sunday, with Zeek, Bolinsky and Rob Vollrath (fr. Richboro/Council Rock South) picking up the only wins for the Golden Bears.  Bolinksy picked up a major decision in the first round before dropping a close 2-0 decision in the second. Bolinsky picked up another decision in the wrestle-backs. Vollrath won his match by forfeit.
