WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (3-3, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 12/8 - KU 81, PENN STATE-BERKS 49 Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) scored a career-high 30 points and Max Foye (so. Mountaintop/Crestwood) recorded a double-double as KU defeated Penn-State Berks at Keystone Hall. Dennis poured in 17 in the first half of the non-conference matchup. Four of his baskets came via the dunk. He also recorded three blocks, three steals and three assists. Foye finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) just missed a double-double of his own with 13 points and nine rebounds. Woodlin also had a career-high seven assists. KU outrebounded the Nittany Lions 50-34, creating several second-chance scoring opportunities and limiting Penn State-Berks to just 11 offensive boards. Defensively, KU swarmed to create 30 turnovers and record 19 steals. Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) led KU with a career-high eight steals.

Women’s Basketball (5-3, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 12/5 - KU 52, COLUMBIA UNION 45 — KU managed to overcome foul trouble to hold on and defeat Columbia Union in a defensive struggle at Keystone Hall. The Golden Bears were led by Rachel Weidensaul (sr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan), who finished with a team-high 16 points in the non-conference matchup. Lara Dellegrotti (jr. Berwick/Berwick) hit three 3-pointers for KU and finished with 10 points, while Mercedes Van Wagner (sr. Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) led the team in rebounds with 11. KU trailed 9-2 early before going on an 11-0 run to take the lead it would not relinquish. The Golden Bears led by four points at halftime and quickly built a 13-point lead by opening the second half on a 13-4 run.

       SAT 12/8 - KU 81, PENN STATE-BERKS 54 — Rachel Weidensaul (sr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) and Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) each posted 16 points as KU cruised to a non-conference win over Penn State-Berks at Keystone Hall. KU jumped on the Nittany Lions early and exploded to a 20-point halftime lead, while shooting 64.5 percent (21-of-30) from the floor in the first half. The Golden Bears hit four of their five 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 53-33 lead at the break. Katie Dovey (so. Willow Hill/Fannett-Metal) and Chauntelle Schroeder (so. Toronto, ONTARIO/Mother Teresa Catholic) each had nine points for the Golden Bears, and Claire Sitarz (so. Southampton/Archbishop Wood) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Women’s Bowling (12-15)

Last Week’s Action

       FRI 12/7 - KU 3, CHEYNEY 0 — KU won two matches against Cheyney University at Berks Lanes, giving KU an unofficial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship. The matches were the first between KU and Cheyney, the only PSAC institutions that sponsor a women’s bowling team on the NCAA level. The PSAC does not sponsor an official conference championship in the sport. KU, marking its inaugural season in 2007-08, won the two-game traditional match by a score of 1831-950, then won the six-game baker match 988-624. The traditional match featured KU’s first-ever 1,000-pin score, as KU recorded a score of 1,066, to outdistance the Wolves (471). Kayla Stamm (fr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) led the way, with a program record 268, bowling strikes on her final nine balls. Jacquelyn Heimbach (jr. Easton/Easton) rolled a 222, Steph Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) a 215, Megan Jonigkeit (fr. Langhorne/Neshaminy) notched a 214 and Jill Brennecke (jr. Hatfield/North Penn) tallied a 147 to round out the score.  Ray led KU with a 194 in the second game, in which KU outscored Cheyney 765-479.  She was followed by April Pierson (so. Royersford/Spring-Ford) at 169, Jenna Palermo (jr. Allentown/William Allen) at 156, Janel Derr (jr. Allentown/William Allen) at 137 and Melissa Pechman (fr. Cedar Knolls, N.J./Whippany Park) at 109. In the baker match, KU easily won five of the six games, with a high of 197 in game three.

Wrestling (3-0)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 12/8 - 8th/8 at PSAC Championships (at Clarion) — Five KU wrestlers earned places at the 65th annual Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships, as the Golden Bears finished eighth in the team standings at Clarion University.  Edinboro won its third straight and 11th overall PSAC championship with 152.5 points.  Bloomsburg was second with 118.5, followed by Clarion (88.5), Lock Haven (76), Shippensburg (62), Millersville (51.5), East Stroudsburg (46) and KU (34). KU’s five place-winners ranged from fourth to sixth place. Kyle Davis (so. Peckville/Valley View), at 184 pounds, and Scott Snyder (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh), at 197, placed fourth.  Davis was 2-2, winning two consolation bouts to get to the third-place match, where he fell 5-2. Snyder won in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals by decision. In the third-place match, he lost 2-1. Kevin Bolinsky (fr. Ashland/North Schuylkill) placed fifth at 285 pounds. After falling in the opening round, Bolinsky picked up a consolation decision before losing in the second round of wrestlebacks. In the fifth-place match, Bolinsky won by decision. Chris Chambers (jr. Holland/Council Rock South) and Dave Zeek (so. Newtown/Council Rock North) rounded out KU's place winners, finishing sixth at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Both grapplers lost in the quarterfinals before picking up first-round consolation wins by decision. The pair then lost their second consolation matches, before falling by decision in the fifth-place bout.
