WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (4-4, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

TUE 12/18 - KU 69, SLIPPERY ROCK 65 Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 20 points and Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) had 17 as KU held off Slippery Rock at Keystone Hall. Slippery Rock led for the majority of the first half of the PSAC crossover contest, but four straight points from Mark Bower (jr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford), who finished with 10 points, and a layup from Ben forged a 29-24 KU lead with 2:27 left in the first half. The Golden Bears never trailed again despite their largest lead being six points. Bower led KU in rebounds with eight, and newcomer Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glendale/Wissahickon) had seven rebounds and two blocks. Ben had five steals and four assists to go with his 20 points.

WED 12/19 - EDINBORO 87, KU 84 — Missed free throws kept KU alive, but the Golden Bears couldn’t hit the game-tying shot throughout the final minute, falling to Edinboro University at Keystone Hall. Edinboro missed 9-of-14 free-throw attempts in the final 1:39 to allow KU to keep the PSAC crossover contest close, but the Golden Bears missed four 3-pointers in the same time frame. Dennis, who tied a career-high with 30 points, missed a 3-pointer with the Fighting Scots leading 85-82, and Ben, who scored 17 points to close to within five of 1,000 for his career, missed a desperation 3 at the buzzer. Dennis had a solid night at the line, hitting 10-of-12 free throws. The 6-foot-5 guard recorded 10 rebounds to collect the double-double. He also hit two 3s and finished with three steals and two blocks. His 30 points tied the career-high mark he set against Penn State-Berks on Dec. 8. Ben had five assists and two 3s, while Jeremy Coombs (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) posted 10 points and six rebounds.

Neither team cracked 40 percent shooting from the floor, as KU hit just 28 percent of its shots (13-of-46) and Edinboro made 36 percent (20-of-55). KU turned a one-point halftime deficit into a five-point lead, 25-20 with 15:58 to play, but the Scots scored the next five points for the first of eight ties in the second half.
