WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (12-5, 4-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 1/23 - KU 78, MILLERSVILLE 60 — KU used stellar defense to defeat Millersville University in convincing fashion in a PSAC East men’s basketball game at Keystone Hall. Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Jeremy Coombs (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) scored 13 points and had eight boards.  Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) notched 14 points despite foul trouble and a second-half injury limiting his minutes. Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glendale/Wissahickon) added 11 rebounds, six points, five assists and three blocks. Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) had seven points, seven rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

SAT 1/26 - KU 67, Bloomsburg 52 — KU extended its winning streak to six games with a victory at Bloomsburg University Saturday to move to 4-0 in the PSAC East, tying a school record for best start in the conference. KU boasted four players in double digits, including Woodlin, who paced the Golden Bears with 14 points. Washington missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. He also dished out five assists. The team’s second leading scorer, Ben, played for 38 minutes and scored 12 points. Coombs scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Women’s Basketball (9-10, 2-2 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 1/23 - MILLERSVILLE 65, KU 40 — KU lost to PSAC East foe Millersville University at Keystone Hall. The Golden Bears did not have a player score in double-digits, but were led by Rachel Weidensaul (sr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) and Claire Sitarz (so. Southampton/Archbishop Wood), who each had eight points. Weidensaul shot well early on, as she scored almost half (eight) of KU’s 19 points in the first 20 minutes.

       SAT 1/26 - KU 71, Bloomsburg 52 — Weidensaul scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead KU past Bloomsburg in a PSAC East contest. Weidensaul, who hit the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season, shot 8-of-11 from the field and was 2-of-3 from 3-point land. The hot shooting was contagious as the Golden Bears shot 57.1 percent in the first half and found themselves up 38-29 at halftime. Lara Dellegrotti (jr. Berwick/Berwick) played a season-high 32 minutes and chipped in 12 points, shooting 4-of-11 from the field with three 3-pointers.

Women’s Bowling (32-31)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 1/26 - KU 9th/20 at BOWIE STATE CLASSIC — KU went 5-6 to finish ninth out of 20 teams with 8,989 total pins at the Bowie State Classic. The Golden Bears went 3-2 in baker games Saturday and 2-4 in the traditional games Sunday. Kayla Stamm (fr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) led Kutztown with a 199.3 average, followed closely by Megan Jonigkeit (fr. Langhorne/Neshaminy), who had a 198.1, and Jacquelyn Heimbach (jr. Easton/Easton), who averaged 193.1. In the  baker games, KU collected wins over No. 17 St. Paul’s (730-627), North Central Carolina State (818-636) and Elizabeth City (741-703). KU’s only losses came to Virginia State (639-624) and to No. 3 University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (888-691). In Sunday’s traditional matches, KU beat Howard (912-850) and St. Francis (950-911), and lost to Morgan State (927-924), No. 10 Delaware State (930-925), No. 7 Sacred Heart (1,000-790) and No. 5 Fairleigh Dickinson (996-884).

Men’s Swimming (6-1, 3-1 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 1/25 - KU 111, SHIPPENSBURG 94 — KU boasted five first-place finishers as it defeated Shippensburg in a PSAC meet at Keystone Hall. Sean Bonifas (sr. Lancaster/Hempfield) won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.54, while Greg Fournier (sr. Warrington/Central Bucks East) took first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:17.93). Stephen Krater (so. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area), Gabriel Recio (fr. Lancaster/Hempfield) and Nicholas Williams (fr. Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), who all teamed up with Derek Orr (jr. Easton/Easton) to finish first in the 400 medley relay (3:16.52), also collected individual first-place finishes for KU. Recio won the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.31, while Krater took first in the 200 freestyle (1:49.01). Williams won the 500 freestyle, finishing in 4:57.87.

Women’s Swimming (8-2, 5-2 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 1/25 - KU 118, SHIPPENSBURG 85 Ashley Singer (sr. Lititz/Warwick), Allison Sheely (fr. Enola/Trinity) and Steph Jeppesen (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) led KU with two individual wins each as the Golden Bears defeated visiting Shippensburg in a PSAC meet at Keystone Hall. The trio, along with Laura Heebner (jr. Easton/Easton), set a new pool record in the 400-yard medley relay (4:04.79). Singer took first in the 200 and 500 freestyle events with times of 1:56.89 and 5:15.96, respectively. Jeppesen won the 200 individual medley (2:13.18) and the 200 breaststroke (2:27.80), while Sheely took first in the 50 freestyle (25.47) and the 200 backstroke (2:14.59).

Indoor Track and Field

Last Week’s Action

       WED 1/23 KU women at Ursinus Pentathlon — Three members of the KU women’s team placed in the top 15 of the Ursinus College Pentathlon. Rebecca Kerchak (jr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) placed third with 2,636 points. Allyson Serafin (fr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) finished 10th with 2,227 and Kayley Harmon (fr. Germansville/Northwestern Lehigh) was 13th with 1,908.

       FRI-SAT 1/25-1/26 - KU women at Bison Open — Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) led KU with its only first-place finish at the Bison Open. Horstmann won the 800-meter run (2:19.52). Keri Brown (fr. Southampton, N.J./Seneca) placed fourth in the 800 (2:23.06). Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) also made her mark at the Bison Open setting a school record while placing third in the 3,000 run (10:18.66). Doofan Tor-Agbidye (jr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) placed in two individual events and a relay Saturday. She finished second in the 400 (58.81) and fourth in the 200 (26.69), while helping the 1,600 relay team, consisting of her and Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western), Laura Deller (sr. York/Dallastown) and Heather Spangenberg (so. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights), finish second (4:03.61). Jessica Donovan (jr. Newtown/Pennsbury) took sixth in the 500 (1:23.02), while Becky Webb (so. Laurys Station/Parkland) finished seventh in the 1,000 (3:21.08). Alex Butler (jr. Montoursville/Montoursville) finished seventh in the long jump (16-8¼). Kelly Strickland (so. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) took second in the pole vault (10-10). Kristen Cupido (fr. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) qualified for the PSAC meet with her fifth-place finish in the 5,000 (18:28.21). The women’s distance medley relay team, consisting of Horstmann, Brown, Williams and Tor-Agbidye, finished fourth and met an NCAA provisional qualifying mark (12:24.19).

       FRI-SAT 1/25-1/26 - KU men at Bison Open — KU had 15 athletes and two relay teams finish in the top eight of their respective events in the second day of the Bison Open Saturday, while James Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) set a new school record Friday with a first-place throw of 54-2 in the shot put. The throw also placed him in seventh on the NCAA Division II performance list. Saturday, the Golden Bears’ best finish came in the 1,600-meter relay, as the team of Billy Boorse (sr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley), Steve Hixson (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham) and Kendel Dixon (so. Atglen/Octorara) finished second with a time of 3:24.05. Hixson also placed in two other individual events, finishing eighth in both the 200 (23.41) and the 400 (51.53). Dixon finished one place ahead of Hixson in the 400 (51.52). Boorse added a seventh-place finish in the 800, with a time of 2:00.13. Michael Kramer (fr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) took sixth in the 60 (7.18), while four Golden Bears, Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon), Shaun Crump (so. Boyertown/Boyertown), Isaac Schatz (fr. Elliottsburg/West Perry) and Doug Theye-Ace (jr. E. Stroudsburg/E. Stroudsburg S.), placed in the 500. Harvey finished third (1:08.87), Crump took fifth (1:09.05), Schatz was sixth (1:10.70) and Theye-Ace was seventh (1:12.30). Harvey also placed in the 60 hurdles, finishing fourth (8.54), one place ahead of teammate T.J. Longmore (so. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.), who finished in 8.63 seconds. KU placed six athletes in the field events, with Dart and Justin Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) leading the way. Dart took third in the weight throw (52-8¼), while Germani tied for third in the pole vault (14-9). Tim Ohm (so. Media/Penncrest) also placed in the pole vault, finishing fifth (14-3¼). Devin Peterson (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) finished fourth in the long jump (21-4), while Kramer took fifth (20-11¾). Brian Collier (fr. Norristown/Norristown) had a fifth-place finish in the triple jump (43-1¾). Ian Clark (jr. Troy, N.H./Monadnock Regional) finished the heptathlon in fifth place with 4,265 points.

Wrestling (8-3-1)

Last Week’s Action

       FRI 1/25-SAT 1/26 - KU 3-1-1 at East Coast Duals — KU finished 3-1-1 at the East Coast Duals at UNC-Pembroke. KU went 3-1-1 overall at the event, with Kyle Davis (so. Peckville/Valley View), Scott Snyder (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) and Kevin Bolinsky (fr. Ashland/North Schuylkill) dominating the bottom of the Golden Bears’ lineup. The three wrestlers, who compete at 184, 197 and 285 pounds, respectively, went a combined 13-2 at the duals with six pins. Snyder went 5-0 with a pin, while Davis and Bolinsky each went 4-1. Both of their losses came to nationally ranked wrestlers. Bolinsky finished with three pins and Davis had two. Chris Chambers (jr. Holland/Council Rock South), at 149, and Dave Zeek (so. Newtown/Council Rock North), at 157, also went 4-1 at the duals. Both had two pins each, and Chambers added a technical fall. KU opened the duals with two wins Friday, 26-12 over Anderson (S.C.) and 29-14 against host UNC-Pembroke. The Golden Bears began Saturday’s sessions with an 18-18 tie against No. 18 Limestone. KU bounced back with a decisive 42-3 win over St. Andrews before coming up short in a 21-18 loss to Belmont Abbey.
