Men’s Basketball (14-7, 6-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 2/6 - KU 78, East Stroudsburg 56 — KU’s Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored a career-high 32 points to lead a stellar second-half come-from-behind victory at East Stroudsburg. Ben scored 24 of his points after halftime, as KU outscored the Warriors 52-19 in the second half, turning an 11-point halftime deficit into a rout. Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) scored 14 points and Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) added 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

       SAT 2/9 - KU 78, WEST CHESTER 73 — Ben scored 16 points and hit a late 3-pointer which helped propel KU to a five-point win over West Chester at Keystone Hall. Ben’s 3 with 1:05 left in the second half gave KU a 76-73 lead, and Dennis, who scored 17 points, hit two free throws to help the Golden Bears sweep their regular-season series with West Chester. Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic), Woodlin and Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glendale/Wissahickon) also reached double-digit scoring for KU. Edwards, who finished with 15 points, hit three 3-pointers in the game, including two in the second half. Woodlin and Washington each picked up double-doubles. Woodlin had 14 points and 10 boards, while Washington had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Dennis, who had just two points in the first half, went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line in the second half.

Women’s Basketball (9-13, 2-5 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 2/6 - East Stroudsburg 67, KU 59 — Melissa McQuade (fr. Pittsburgh/Shaler) scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but KU fell to East Stroudsburg in a PSAC East contest at Koehler Fieldhouse. McQuade connected on 8-of-18 field goals, including four 3-pointers as the freshman hit the 20-point mark for the first time. She was the only Golden Bear to reach double figures in the scoring column, as Rachel Weidensaul (sr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) and Mercedes Van Wagner (sr. Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) netted nine points apiece.

       SAT 2/9 - WEST CHESTER 67, KU 65 Van Wagner joined the exclusive 1,000-point club in Kutztown’s loss to West Chester University as her game-high 24 points made her the 11th woman in program history to score 1,000. With a pair free throws at the 6:23 mark, she hit 1,001 career points and stretched KU’s lead to 28-18 late in the first frame. McQuade picked up her third consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Rachel Wisemiller (so. Hazleton/Hazleton) chipped in 13 points.

Women’s Bowling (37-36)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 2/9-2/10 - KU 7th/14 at Capital Classic (Dover, Del.) — KU went 3-2 in its traditional matches Saturday and 2-3 in baker games Sunday to finished seventh out of 14 teams at the Capital Classic in Dover, Del. KU just missed out on a 4-1 record Saturday, falling to No. 17 St. Francis by only five pins (829-824). In individual games Saturday, Jacquelyn Heimbach (jr. Easton/Easton) averaged a 205 in the five matches on the day, with her high score of 224 coming against No. 20 Bowie State in the fourth match of the day. Heimbach was named the team MVP for the tournament, placing seventh overall. Kayla Stamm (fr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) had a solid day for the Golden Bears, turning in a 183 average and a high game of 201 in the match against Bowie State. Steph Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) averaged a 166.4, while Megan Jonigkeit (fr. Langhorne/Neshaminy) posted an average of 167.6. Jillian Brennecke (jr. Hatfield/North Penn) averaged a 147 through three games. The Golden Bears (32-31) defeated top 20 team Bowie State (No.20) and fell to No. 17 Saint Francis 829-824 and No.5 Fairleigh Dickinson 895-808. KU defeated Hampton 838-799 and Coppin St. 911-786. On Sunday, KU (37-36) played three total-score baker games and two best-of-seven games. The Golden Bears lost 757-707 to No. 15 Adelphi and 788-740 to Howard in total-score games, while winning 770-719 over Morgan State. In two best-of-seven baker matches, KU lost to Wisconsin-Whitewater 4-1 and defeated Morgan State 4-1.

       FRI 2/8 - KU men at Susquehanna University Invitational (Selinsgrove, Pa.) — The KU men had four first-place finishes at the Susquehanna Invitational. Cody Hartzler (jr. Belleville/Indian Valley) won the high jump (6-4 3/4), while Devin Peterson (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) took the top spot in the long jump (21-11). Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) won the shot put (52-11 1/2) and Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) took first in the 55-meter hurdles (7.96). In the 55 dash, Michael Kramer (fr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) finished third (6.61) and Peterson took fourth (6.69). T.J. Longmore (so. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) finished second in the 55 hurdles (8.04), while Isaac Schatz (fr. Elliottsburg/West Perry) took fourth (8.20). John Pyne (jr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) finished fourth in the 5,000 (16:07.55). The 1,600 relay team of Harvey, Peterson, Schatz and Joe Tavormina (fr. Hellertown/Saucon Valley) finished second (3:33.58). In the pole vault, Justin Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) finished second (14-11). In the long jump, Kramer finished third (21-4) and Brian Collier (fr. Norristown/Norristown) fourth (20-8). Sam Wall (so. Newville/Big Spring) finished third in the shot put (47-3 1/2), while Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover, N.J./Newtown) finished third in the 35-pound weight throw (45-2 1/2).

       FRI 2/8 - KU women at Susquehanna University Invitational (Selinsgrove, Pa.) — The KU women had four first-place finishes at the Susquehanna Invitational. The 1,600 relay team of Lynn Lisofsky (fr. Wilkes-Barre/Coughlin), Jolene Collins (so. Palmyra/Palmyra), Jessica Donovan (jr. Newtown/Pennsbury) and Jessica Schlechter (so. Chalfont/Central Bucks South) finished first (4:16.66), along with the 3,200 relay team of Marueen Watson (so. Walnutport/Allentown Central Cath.), Becky Webb (so. Laurys Station/Parkland), Michele Celenza (jr. Lansdale/North Penn) and Katelyn Katzgrau (sr. West Milford, NJ/Pope John XXIII), which won in 10:32.16. Kelly Strickland (so. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) took first in the pole vault (10-11 3/4), while Alex Butler (jr. Montoursville/Montoursville) won the long jump (17-0 1/2). Laura Deller (sr. York/Dallastown) finished third in the long jump (16-7 1/4). Jennifer Zook (fr. Lewistown/Indian Valley) took third in the high jump (4-9 3/4). Michelle Hughes (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) finished third in the shot put (37-11 1/4), while Ashley Pinter (fr. Bethlehem/Liberty) was fourth (37-4). Hughes was second in the 20-pound weight throw (48-1 3/4). Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western) was fourth in the 400 (1:01.50). Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was third in the mile (5:29.25) and Christina Reimer (fr. Chester Springs/Downingtown East) took third in the 5,000 (19:15.62).

       FRI-SAT 2/8-2/9 - KU men and women at New Balance Collegiate Invitational (New York, N.Y.) — The KU men’s team place in the top 25 in three events, while the women did the same in two. James Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) placed 12th in the shot put (54-1) and 21st in the 35-pound weight throw (55-4 1/4). The 1,600-meter relay team of Steve Hixson (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham), Billy Boorse (sr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) and Kendel Dixon (so. Atglen/Octorara) finished sixth (3:23.74). Dixon finished 93rd in 400 (50.73), while Hixson took 104th with a time of 51.38 seconds. Boorse was 57th in the 800 (1:58.66). For the women, Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) finished fifth in the 5,000 (17:46.49), while the 1,600 relay team of Deller, Heather Spangenberg (so. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights), Colburn and Doofan Tor-Agbidye (jr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) finished sixth (4:03.07). Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) finished 27th in the mile (5:12.85). Horstmann also finished 43rd in the 800 (2:22.43), behind Keri Brown (fr. Southampton, N.J./Seneca), who finished 41st (2:20.41, 43). Tor-Agbidye finished 83rd in the 400 (59.97), while Spangenberg was 110th (1:02.58).

Wrestling (9-3-1)

Last Week’s Action

       THU 2/7 - KU 28, MILLERSVILLE 13 — KU continued its stellar dual meet season at Keystone Hall as it won five straight bouts to solidify a 28-13 defeat of Division I Millersville. Winning decisions for the Golden Bears were Rob Vollrath (fr. Richboro/Council Rock South) at 133, Chris Chambers (jr. Holland/Council Rock South) at 149, Sonny Flood (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) at 165, and Curtis Beardsell (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) at 174. Kyle Davis (so. Peckville/Valley View) at 184, won by major decision. Scott Snyder (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) earned the forfeit victory as Millersville elected to bump its 197-pounder up to face KU heavyweight Kevin Bolinsky (fr. Ashland/North Schuylkill). Bolinsky had the lone fall of the night for the Golden Bears at the 6:30 mark in the third period. Flood’s 3-1 overtime victory decision was crucial for KU, as he scored the takedown with only seven seconds left in the overtime period. Davis’ 10-2 decision sealed the victory as he shot out to a 5-0 first period lead and never looked back, making the score 16-13 in favor of KU. Vollrath won 8-3 and Chambers won 4-1 to cut the Marauders’ lead to 10-6.

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 2/9 - Barton 10, Kutztown 7; Barton 11, Kutztown 8 — KU opened up its season dropping two games in a doubleheader against Barton College in Wilson, N.C. Barton won 10-7 in the first game and 11-8 in the second. Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) and Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) highlighted KU’s offense, each going 4-for-9 in the doubleheader. Lightcap had three homers, six RBIs and three runs scored, while Kacelowicz also had a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored. In the second game, Jared Frey (fr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) went 2-for-3 with an RBI double.

SUN 2/10 - Barton 11, Kutztown 6; Barton 4, Kutztown 2 — KU lost 11-6 and 4-2 to Barton in their second straight doubleheader to start the 2008 season. Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Lightcap went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. In the second game, Mark Renda (r-fr. Lansdale/North Penn) had a 2-for-3 showing at the plate with and RBI.

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 2/9 - KU 2-1 at USC-Aiken Tournament — KU opened its season with two wins at the USC-Aiken Tournament in Aiken, S.C., defeating No. 3 Columbus State 4-2 and UNC-Pembroke 4-3. Augusta State won 3-2 in the Golden Bears’ only loss of the tournament. Against UNC-Pembroke, Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) struck out 10 batters in a complete-game win Saturday. Arbogast allowed three runs on six hits in her seven innings of work. Kim Morrison (jr. Newmarket, ONTARIO/Sir William Mulock), who finished 2-for-3, hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give KU the early 2-0 lead. She also had a double in the game. Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) went 1-for-2 for KU with a walk. Against Augusta, Krista Cameron (jr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart) had a double for KU, which went up 2-0 in the top of the fourth, but Augusta struck out 13 Golden Bears to squeak out the one-run win. Fitzgerald led KU against Columbus State, going 3-for-3, with a homer and double. Her solo homer in the third gave KU a 3-0 lead. Kathy Gregg (sr. Narvon/Garden Spot) also an RBI in the game, and Cameron had a double. Monica Glomb (fr. Mars/Mars) pitched a complete game for the Golden Bears, striking held Columbus State to only four hits and two walks in the game

       SUN 2/10 - KU 2-0 at USC-Aiken Tournament — KU won both its contests in the second day of the USC-Aiken Tournament, defeating No. 23 Georgia College and State University 4-2 and the host squad, USC-Aiken, 3-1. Fitzgerald, against GCSU, doubled in two runs in the first inning, and in the second inning, Maria Schiavo (so. Old Forge/Old Forge) roped a two-run single to make it 4-0. The four runs were all that Glomb needed, as she picked up her second victory in the tournament. Glomb went the distance, allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Arbogast picked up her second win in KU’s victory over USC-Aiken, pitching in relief of freshman Maggie Reifsnyder (fr. Philadelphia/Littleflower). In her first collegiate action, Reifsnyder went 1.1 innings, while allowing one earned run on three hits. She walked one and struck out two. Arbogast entered the game with one out in the second inning and was lights out, fanning 11 batters in 5.2 innings of work. Cameron drove in the first run of the game in the first inning with a triple, giving the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead.
