WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (16-7, 8-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 2/13 - KU 94, Mansfield 91 Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 25 points to lead KU to a win over Mansfield in a PSAC East contest. Ben was nearly perfect from the free-throw line, hitting 13-of-14 attempts. He brought his career total for free throws made to 320, breaking KU's career free throw record. Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) and Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) scored 17 points each, while Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) added 14.

       SAT 2/16 - KU 97, BLOOMSBURG 68 Woodlin scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Kutztown University men’s basketball team in a rout of Bloomsburg at Keystone Hall. Edwards and Ben also reached double digits for KU scoring 17 apiece, while Dennis finished with 13 points. Edwards hit three 3-pointers for the Golden Bears and had four steals, while Ben led the team in rebounding with eight and assists with five. Ben also had a 7-for-12 showing at the free-throw line.

Women’s Basketball (11-13, 4-5 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 2/13 - KU 63, Mansfield 49 Mercedes Van Wagner (sr. Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) had 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Katie Dovey (so. Willow Hill/Fannett-Metal) chipped in a career-high 12 points off the bench as KU defeated Mansfield. Dovey played a season-high 26 minutes and shot 5-of-9 from the field. Melissa McQuade (fr. Pittsburgh/Shaler) also had 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Lara Dellegrotti (jr. Berwick/Berwick) rounded out KU's scoring leaders with 12 points.

       SAT 2/16 - KU 76, BLOOMSBURG 56 Rachel Wisemiller (so. Hazleton/Hazleton) hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points as KU defeated Bloomsburg at Keystone Hall. Dellegrotti also finished in double digits with 11 points, and Van Wagner pulled down 13 rebounds. KU had 12 players score baskets in the game.

Women’s Bowling (41-41)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 16-17 - KU 16th/32 at Morgan State Classic (Perry Hall, Md.) — KU went 4-5 and finished in 16th place out of 32 teams at the Morgan State Classic in Perry Hall, Md. The Golden Bears went 3-1 Saturday in individual competition and 1-4 in baker games on Sunday. Jacquelyn Heimbach (jr. Easton/Easton) and Kayla Stamm (fr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) led the Golden Bears in the traditional games Saturday, posting averages of 196.6 and 190.6, respectively. Heimbach had a high game of 224, while Stamm’s best game was 219. Heimbach had the 11th highest overall average and Stamm finished 16th. KU (41-41) defeated Florida A&M 907-869, Wisconsin-Whitewater 911-908 and Norfolk 919-857 for its three wins. The Golden Bears’ only loss came to No. 1 Nebraska. Steph Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) finished with an average of 177.2 for KU, with a high game of 196, while Megan Jonigkeit (fr. Langhorne/Neshaminy) averaged a 170.6. Her high game was 200. During Sunday's baker games, KU picked up 704-688 win over North Carolina A&T. KU fell to two opponents that are ranked in the top 10 in the nation, falling to No. 3 Vanderbilt 761-683 and gave up a late lead to No. 8 Arkansas State, falling 743-734. KU was also defeated by Elmhurst College 710-624 and Morgan State 727-702.

       SAT 2/16 - KU men and women at Susquehanna University Open (Selinsgrove, Pa.) Jim Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) placed first in the 35-pound weight throw and set a school record in the shot put with his second-place finish throw of 55-1. It was also a field house record, which tied him for first, but he was placed second due to criteria. Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) finished behind Dart in the shot put (53-6 1/2). Cody Hartzler (jr. Belleville/Indian Valley) also placed first with a height of 6-6 in the high jump. Devin Peterson (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) finished second in the long jump (21-10), while Michael Kramer (fr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) finished fourth (21-4 3/4). Justin Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) finished third in the pole vault (14-5 1/4). Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham) finished second in the 55-meter hurdles (7.79). On the women's side, Keri Brown (fr. Southampton, N.J./Seneca) finished first in the mile (5:13.08), while setting a field house record. Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) finished second in the mile (5:18.00). Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished first in the 3,000-meter run (10:31.84). Michelle Hughes (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) took second in the 20-pound weight throw (50-0 3/4), while Kelly Strickland (so. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) took second in the pole vault (10-6) and Alison Wise (so. Denver/Garden Spot) finished third (10-0). Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) finished third in the 400 (1:01.14). The men's 1,600 relay team of Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon), Steve Hixson (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) and Redley, Billy Boorse (sr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) finished second (3:25.00), while the 3,200 relay team of Ben Loht (so. Lewistown/Indian Valley), Ian Clark (jr. Troy, N.H./Monadnock Regional), Matt Reightler (fr. Bethlehem/Northampton) and Shaun Crump (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) finished third (8:25.59). The women's 1,600 relay team of Laura Deller (sr. York/Dallastown), Heather Spangenberg (so. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights), Horstmann and Doofan Tor-Agbidye (jr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) finished first, setting a field house record with a time of 4:02.56, while the 3,200 relay team of Williams, Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western), Jessica Donovan (jr. Newtown/Pennsbury), Rebecca Kerchak (jr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) finished third (10:21.87).

Last Week’s Action

       FRI 2/15 - KU 19, York College 16 — KU used two overtime wins from Rob Vollrath (fr. Richboro/Council Rock South) and Scott Snyder (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) to defeat York College at Keystone Hall in non-conference action. Snyder, at 197, picked up the overtime win which pushed the match out to six points at 19-13. Vollrath won 4-3 in overtime win, while Chris Chambers (jr. Holland/Council Rock South), Dave Zeek (so. Newtown/Council Rock North), Curtis Beardsell (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) and Kyle Davis (so. Peckville/Valley View) also won decisions for KU.
