WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (17-8, 9-2 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 2/20 - Millersville 80, KU 67 Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 29 points, but KU lost to Millersville. Ben was 10-of-18 from the floor and hit 7-of-8 free throws. Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) added 13 points and Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glenside/Wissahickon) had 18 rebounds.

       SAT 2/23 - KU 79, Cheyney 71 — KU regained a share of the PSAC East lead with an upset win at Cheyney. Five players scored in double figures for KU, led by Edwards, Ben and Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) all pouring in 16. Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) added 13 and Jeremy Coombs (Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) scored 10. Washington had eight points and 10 rebounds. Edwards hit a 3-pointer with 6:18 left for a 65-63 lead.  Woodlin hit 1-of-2 from the line and Washington sank two charity shots for a 68-63 lead with 4:30 left. Then Ben took over. The junior guard had steals on consecutive Cheyney possessions, drew fouls and hit two free throws after both for a 72-69 lead with 2:07 remaining. After Ben drew a charge on the next Wolves possession, Washington hit a layup with 1:39 left.

Women’s Basketball (11-15, 4-7 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 2/20 - Millersville 56, KU 43 Chauntelle Schroeder (so. Toronto, ONTARIO/Mother Teresa Catholic) scored a career-high 13 points for KU, but the Golden Bears fell at Millersville in a PSAC East contest. Rachel Weidensaul (Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) scored 11 points.

       SAT 2/23 - Cheyney 72, KU 59 — KU fell to Cheyney in PSAC Eastern Division action at Cope Hall. KU was led by Rachel Wisemiller (so. Hazleton/Hazleton), who scored a career-high 21 points. Mercedes Van Wagner (sr. Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) added 19 points and 12 rebounds. She has 828 career rebounds, three away from the KU career record of 831. Melissa McQuade (fr. Pittsburgh/Shaler) netted nine points and eight rebounds.

       THU-SUN 2/21-2/24 - KU men 4th/7 at PSAC Championships KU matches its 2007 finish at the PSAC meet taking fourth place with 326 points. West Chester was first with 919 points, and clarion (631.5) and Shippensburg (115.5) followed. Edinboro finished 24 points behind KU and Indiana (Pa.) had 289 points and Bloomsburg 287. Nicholas Williams (fr. Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) led the men with three top five finishes, fourth in the 500 free (4:44.99), fifth in the 200 free in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:43.57 and fourth in the 100 free (47.91). Greg Fournier (sr. Warrington/Central Bucks East) finished seventh in the 1,000 free (10:03.04) and 12th in the 500 free (4:51.83). Scott Thomas (jr. Friedensburg/Blue Mountain) finished 13th in the 1,000 free (10:14.47) and 14th in the 500 free (4:53.28). Scott Arnold (sr. Manchester/Northeastern) was 12th in the 200 fly (2:01.75) and 13th in the 100 fly (53.86). Nelson Martinez (jr. Allentown/L.E. Dieruff) was 13th in 100 breast (1:04.31) and 12th in the 200 breast (2:19.84). John Pandish (jr. Milford/Delaware Valley) finished 11th in the 200 IM (2:01.19), seventh in the 400 IM (4:22.90) and 11th in the 200 fly (2:01.41). A.J. Guarino (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) was ninth in 400 IM (4:25.28). Sean Bonifas (sr. Lancaster/Hempfield) finished 12th in the 200 IM (2:01.77) and sixth in the 100 breast (1:00.47). Derek Orr (jr. Easton/Easton) was 11th in 200 free (1:46.39), 10th in the 50 free (22.12) and 10th in the 100 free (48.47). Gabriel Recio (fr. Lancaster/Hempfield) finished 11th in the 50 freestyle (22.17) and 11th in the 100 back (56.09). The 200 free relay team of Orr, Recio, Williams and Stephen Krater (so. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area) finished fifth (1:27.03). Thomas, Bonifas, Arnold and Williams led the 400 medley relay team to a sixth-place finish (3:36.52). In the 800 free relay, Williams, Pandish, Bonifas and Orr placed third (7:08.64). The 200 MR team of Recio, Bonifas, Arnold and Orr was sixth (1:38.24). The 400 free relay of Orr, Recio, Krater, and Williams finished sixth (3:13.72).

 

Women’s Swimming (9-2, 5-2 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       THU-SUN 2/21-2/24 - KU women 7th/13 at PSAC Championships — KU broke several records and finished seventh at the PSAC Championships in Mechanicsburg, Pa. The Golden Bears finished with 295 points, beating out California (Pa.) for the seventh spot by 43 points. West Chester won the team title with 703 points, ahead of second-place Clarion (523.5). Indiana (Pa.) was third (407), followed by Edinboro (370), Bloomsburg (328) and Shippensburg (315). Lock Haven (119), Millersville (113.5), East Stroudsburg (86), Slippery Rock (79) and Mansfield (38) rounded out the 13 teams competing. Ashley Singer (sr. Lititz/Warwick) led KU with a first-place victory in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.24 (NCAA provisional B-cut). Her PSAC title marked the first PSAC title for the Golden Bear women since the 1998 championships. Singer also placed third in the 200 free (1:54.85), while setting the school record in the 100 free, leading off the 400 free relay with a time of 52.70. Singer also placed sixth in the open 100 free with a time of 52.88. Steph Jeppesen (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) finished fourth in the 200 IM (2:12.57), while Jeppesen eclipsed Kelly Rowan’s 2005 school record time of 1:06.80 in the preliminaries of the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 1:06.71. In the finals, Jeppesen broke that record again with a time of 1:06.47, an NCAA B-cut time and good for third place. Jeppesen also broke the school record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:24.36. She finished in second place. Staci McGinty (sr. Jamison/Central Bucks East) finished 14th in the 500 free (5:19.72) and eighth 200 free (1:59.67). Jill Pantelides (sr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Prendergast) was 14th in 200 free (2:01.16). Kelli Pry (fr. Coatesville/Coatesville) was 10th in the 100 breast (1:09.10) and 12th in the 200 breast (2:31.98). Heather Wolkom (so. Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Reg.) was 12th in 100 breast (1:09.88) and 11th in the 1,000 free (10:52.86). Kerry Choplin (fr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) was 13th in the 1650 free (18:27.12). Allison Sheely (fr. Enola/Trinity) placed ninth in the 100 back (1:01.69). Laura Heebner (jr. Easton/Easton) finished ninth in the 200 fly (2:17.54). Christie Paski (so. Wilmington, Del./Concord) placed 12th in the 200 fly (2:19.55) and 15th in the 1,650 free (19:34.28). The 200 MR team of Sheely, Jeppesen, Singer and Pantelides was fourth (1:50.78). The 800 free relay team of Singer, Choplin, Jeppesen and McGinty swam a time of 7:55.10, which is 0.05 seconds faster than the previous record set in 2006 and good for fifth place. The 400 freestyle relay squad of Singer, Pantelides, Sheely and McGinty finished eighth (7:55.10). The 200 free relay team of Sheely, Pantelides, Casey Pollard (fr. Easton/Easton) and Jeppesen finished eighth (1:41.23). Sheely, Jeppesen, Heebner and Singer led the 400 medley relay team to a fifth-place finish (4:04.61).

 

Indoor Track and Field

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 2/23 - KU at Princeton Invitational and at Lawrenceville Prep High School Invite At Princeton, Michelle Hughes (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) highlighted the women’s efforts with two fifth-place finishes in the 20-pound weight (49-03.75) and the shot put (38-11.25). On the men’s side, Jim Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) placed third in the shot put with a throw of 53-10.75 and teammate Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) was right behind him in fourth with a toss of 53-00.25. At Lawrenceville, Doofan Tor-Agbidye (jr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) and Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) came home with the only first-place finishes as Tor-Agbidye won the 400-meter dash (59.13) and Williams won the 3,000 (10:22.05). Several others placed in the top six at the meet and many hit season best times. Alex Butler (jr. Montoursville/Montoursville) and Kayla Greaves (fr. Exton/Downingtown East) placed fifth and sixth in the long jump with jumps of 17-03.75 and 17-03.5. That jump for Greaves was a season best and moved her up on the PSAC rankings. Sara Schlitzer (fr. Pottsville/Nativity BVM) placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 31-08.75. Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and Christina Reimer (fr. Chester Springs/Downingtown East) both posted season-best times in their respective events to finish out the top six scoring in the distance events. Cupido finished fourth in the mile (5:17.96), while Reimer finished fourth in the 3,000 (10:53.15). In pole vault, Kelly Strickland (so. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) cleared 10-6 to place fifth and Alison Wise (so. Denver/Garden Spot) jumped 9-05.75 in the event to take home a sixth place. Samirah Barczynski (so. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) was fifth in the 55 dash (7.58). KU's 1,600 relay team of Laura Deller (sr. York/Dallastown), Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western), Heather Spangenberg (so. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) and Tor-Agbidye was second (4:07.59). Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham) and Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) both placed in the top six in the 55 hurdles. Redley was second (7.78) and Harvey tied for sixth (7.89). In the men’s 3,000, Kevin Rodgers (fr. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) and Tim Ballingall (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown East) took two of the top three spots with second- and third-place finishes. Rodgers ran it in 9:17.64, while Ballingall came in at 9:40.72. Cody Hartzler (jr. Belleville/Indian Valley) cleared 6-04.25 to tie for fourth place in the high jump. Michael Kramer (fr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) also tied for fourth place in the 200 dash with a time of 23.35. Billy Boorse (sr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) ran the 800 in a time of 1:57.55 to claim fifth place. Harvey, Steve Hixson (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Redley and Boorse combined to run a season best time of 3:21.80 in the 1,600 relay to place third.

Last Week’s Action

       WED 2/20 - SHIPPENSBURG 24, KU 13 — The Golden Bears dropped their final dual match of the season falling to Shippensburg at Keystone Hall. KU received its first win of the match from Chris Chambers (jr. Holland/Council Rock South) when he recorded a 6-2 decision at 149 pounds. Heavyweight Kevin Bolinsky (fr. Ashland/North Schuylkill) picked up a major decision, while Scott Snyder (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh), at 197, picked up a forfeit victory for KU.

Last Week’s Action

       2/21-2/24 at the Builder Invitational in Newport News, Va.

       THU 2/21 - KU 10, Lock Haven 2 — Lock Haven scored the first two runs in the top of the second, but KU scored the next 10 runs to pick up their first win at the 2008 Builder Invitational at War Memorial Field in Hampton, Va. KU held Lock Haven to just three hits in the non-conference win. The Golden Bears managed 10 runs on six hits — the biggest one coming from Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey). Leading 3-2, Kulbacki blew the game open with his grand slam in the sixth inning, giving the Golden Bears a 7-2 lead. Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) also had a good day at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, two walks and two runs scored. The Golden Bears’ first win of the season was accredited to starting pitcher Philip Rummel (sr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian), who allowed two runs on three hits in six innings of work. Rummel struck out seven batters, while walking four.

       SAT 2/23 - Apprentice 11, KU 10 — KU fell behind early, tied it late, but fell in the end to the host Apprentice School. KU was led at the plate by Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown), who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run. Jeff Kistle (r-fr. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny) scored three runs.

       SUN 2/24 - KU 10, East Stroudsburg 1 — Darin Gorski (fr. Mount Joy/Donegal) led KU over PSAC East foe East Stroudsburg in a non-conference matchup at the 2008 Builder Invitational. Gorski allowed one hit and one unearned run with four strikeouts in five innings pitched for the win. Trent Mertz (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) went two scoreless innings, and Ryan Cassidy (so. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) and Jason Herr (fr. Harrisburg/C.D. East) each tossed a hitless frame. Herr fanned two. Kacelowicz was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. Lightcap was 4-for-5 with a run, while Kulbacki was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

       SUN 2/24 - KU 12, Bloomsburg 5 — KU closed out the 2008 Builder Invitational with a win over Bloomsburg in a non-conference meeting between the two PSAC East teams. Steve Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) hurled six innings, scattering four hits and allowed only three earned runs to pick up his first victory of the season. Garrison Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland) finished things off for KU, striking out three Huskies over the final three innings to record the save. KU enjoyed an offensive explosion, as it scored 11 runs in the first three innings. Bryan Riggins (sr. Glenmore/Downingtown West) and Brett Wigder (fr. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) had two hits a piece, while seven of KU’s nine starters recorded at least one hit.
