Men’s Basketball (19-8, 10-2 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 2/27 - KU 112, COLUMBIA UNION 96 — Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) scored 22 points and Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) had 20 to lead KU over Columbia Union at Keystone Hall. KU's 112 points were its third-most in a game in school history, and the 208 points combined are the most ever for a KU men’s game at Keystone Hall. Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) added 19 points, Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) hit for 16 an Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glendale/Wissahickon) scored 12 to round out KU’s scoring leaders. Kevin Hafera (sr. York/Red Lion) matched career highs with eight points and eight rebounds on his senior night.  

       SAT 3/1 - KU 82, EAST STROUDSBURG 74 Woodlin scored a career-high 28 points and added 10 rebounds as KU defeated East Stroudsburg University to win a share of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East regular season title. This is KU’s first PSAC East title since 1988, when the Golden Bears went 10-2 in PSAC East play. Also, this is Bernie Driscoll’s first PSAC East title as a head coach. KU set a single-game school records for free throws made, 35, and attempted, 51. Woodlin shot 12-of-16 from the line and Dennis scored 11 of his 21 points from the line. Washington was the third Golden Bear in double figures as he netted 13 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Mike Connolly (fr. Souderton/Souderton) was a consistent threat off the bench scoring nine points.

Women’s Basketball (11-16, 4-8 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 3/1 - EAST STROUDSBURG 83, KU 72 — Senior Mercedes Van Wagner (sr. Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional), playing in her final game, broke KU’s all-time career rebound record, but the Golden Bears fell to East Stroudsburg in their final game of the regular season at Keystone Hall. At the 6:44 mark of the first half, Van Wagner pulled down a defensive rebound to set the record, passing Missy Boettger (1987-91) with 831 career boards. Van Wagner finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Bears. Lara Dellegrotti (jr. Berwick/Berwick), Melissa McQuade (fr. Pittsburgh/Shaler) and Meredith Starr (fr. Richmond, Va./Monacan) all scored in double digits for the Golden Bears. Dellegrotti led the way with a team-high 14 points, while McQuade had 12 and Starr had 10 points. KU also bids farewell to seniors Rachel Weidensaul (sr. Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) and Molly Brown (sr. Kennett/Kennett Square). In their final contest for the Golden Bears, Weidensaul scored seven points and Brown had four points and three rebounds.

Indoor Track and Field

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 3/1-3/2 - men 5th/12 at PSAC Championships — Cody Hartzler (jr. Belleville/Indian Valley) and Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) collected first-place finishes for the KU men’s indoor track and field team at the PSAC Championships at East Stroudsburg University. KU finished fifth overall at the meet with 82.5 points. Slippery Rock won with 116.5 points, while Shippensburg was second with 113. East Stroudsburg was close behind with 100 points and California (Pa.) was fourth with 93.5 points. Hartzler finished first in the men’s high jump with a leap of 6-10 1/4, breaking KU's school record. The previous record was 6-9, set by Shaun Landis in 2002. Tyson edged out teammate Jim Dart (sr. Havertown/Havertown) for the top spot in the shot put with a throw of 54-10 3/4. Dart, who owns the school record in the shot put, finished second with a throw of 54-0. Both were NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Dart placed fifth in the 35-pound weight throw (54-3 3/4), Tyson was sixth (52-9 1/4) and Jason Rebuck (so. Southampton/William Tennent) was eighth (51-5 1/2). KU placed four athletes in the top eight of the 55 hurdles, with Vonkurt Redley (sr. Philadelphia/Cheltenham) leading the way with his fifth-place finish (7.72). Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) was sixth (7.84), Justin Gibbs (sr. Pottstown/Pottstown) was seventh (7.97) and T.J. Longmore (so. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) was eighth (7.99). Billy Boorse (sr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) was fourth in the 800 (1:56.54). Redley, Steve Hixson (sr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), Boorse and Kendel Dixon (so. Atglen/Octorara) led the 1,600 relay team to a fourth-place finish (3:22.17). Mike Kramer (fr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) was second in the long jump (22-7 3/4), while Devin Peterson (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) was seventh (21-10 3/4). Ian Clark (jr. Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) was third in the pentathlon (3,350 points), while Isaac Schatz was eighth (3,150). In the pole vault, Justin Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) was fourth (14-11). KU’s distance medley relay team of Ben Loht (so. Lewistown/Indian Valley), Joe Tavormina (fr. Hellertown/Saucon Valley), Tom Mooney (fr. Churchville/Council Rock South) and John Pyne (jr.Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) was sixth in 10:39.93. The 3,200 relay of Mooney, Loht, Matt Reightler (fr. Bethlethem/Northampton) and Boorse was seventh in 7:59.99.

       SAT-SUN 3/1-3/2 - women 4th/12 at PSAC Championships Kelly Strickland (so. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) and Michelle Hughes (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) led the Kutztown University women’s indoor track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the PSAC Championship at East Stroudsburg University. The Golden Bears finished with 66 points, behind Slippery Rock and Shippensburg, who shared the title with 110 points each. Lock Haven was third with 92 points. Strickland’s jump of 11-5 3/4 was good enough for second place in the pole vault. Alison Wise (so. Denver/Garden Spot) finished eight in the pole vault (10-0). Hughes also recorded a second-place finish for KU in the 20-pound weight throw (51-11 3/4). Ashley Pinter (fr. Bethlehem/Liberty) was seventh (48-11 1/2). KU's 3,200 relay of Keri Brown (fr. Southampton, N.J./Seneca), Jessica Donovan (jr. Newtown/Pennsbury), Jolene Collins (so. Palmyra/Palmyra) and Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) was also second in 9:28.90. Samirah Barczynski (so. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) finished fifth in the 55-meter dash (7.50). Doofan Tor-Agbidye (jr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) took third in the 400 (58.66). Brown finished fifth in the mile run (5:10.61). Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was fifth in the 3,000 (10:27.98). Cupido was third in the 5,000 (18:21.25) and Christina Reimer (fr. Chester Springs/Downingtown East) was sixth (18:27.44). The 1,600 relay team of Heather Spangenberg (so. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights), Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western), Horstmann and Tor-Agbidye took fifth place (4:01.97). Alex Butler (jr. Montoursville/Montoursville) was fourth in the long jump (17-1 1/2) and Colburn was eighth in the pentathlon (2,814 points). The women’s distance medley relay placed eighth in a time of 13:29.22. The team consisted of Collins, Lynn Lisofsky (fr. Wilkes-Barre/Coughlin), Kristin Green (sr. Camp Hill/Camp Hill) and Becky Webb (so. Laurys Station/Parkland).

Wrestling (10-4-1)

       FRI-SAT 2/29-3/1 - 9th/13 at NCAA Division II East Regionals — Dave Zeek (so. Newtown/Council Rock North) placed fourth at the NCAA Division II East Regionals at Pitt-Johnstown to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Zeek was the only KU wrestler to advance to a third-place bout. Chris Chambers (jr. Holland/Council Rock South), Kyle Davis (so. Peckville/Valley View), Scott Snyder (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) and Kevin Bolinsky (fr. Ashland/North Schuylkill) all competed in fifth-place bouts, with Chambers and Bolinsky emerging victorious. Fourth-seeded Chambers, at 149, won 3-2 in his fifth-place match, while Bolinsky, at heavyweight, won 1-0 to take fifth. Bolinsky had two pins en route to his fifth-place finish. Zeek won a 13-8 decision in the consolation quarterfinals before winning 7-2 in the semifinals. But second-seeded Dan Nauman, from Shippensburg, pinned Zeek in 4:59 to win third. KU finished ninth overall in the team standings with 43 points. Newberry College won the team title with 129.5 points, ahead of host Pitt-Johnstown, which had 121 points. Mercyhurst (87), Gannon (83.5) and West Liberty State College (83.5) round out the top five. Zeek will represent KU and travel to the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the NCAA Division II Championships on March 14-15. Upper Iowa University will host the tournament.

       FRI-SUN 2/29-3/2 - at Catawba Tournament (Salisbury, N.C.)

       FRI 2/29 - KU 9, Glenville State 0 — Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) helped No. 21-ranked KU blank Glenville State in six innings, forcing the mercy rule into effect. Arbogast struck out 13 batters in six innings of work, allowing just two hits and no walks. Steph Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) led the Golden Bears, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs. Denlinger’s two-RBI double with the bases loaded in the sixth inning helped the Golden Bears break the game wide open. Krista Cameron (jr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart) followed Denlinger’s big hit with a double of her own, scoring two more runs. Sam Flowers (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) and Krista Tedjeske (fr. Summerhill/Forest Hills) also had extra-base hits for the Golden Bears.

       FRI 2/29 - Catawba 7, KU 3 — Catawba’s grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning created the separation needed to knock off KU. Catawba scored all seven of its runs in back-to-back innings, with three in the fourth and four in the fifth. Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run.

       SAT 3/1 - KU 6, Coker College 0 — Arbogast pitched her second straight gem for KU, throwing seven innings of no-hit ball in a win over Coker College. Arbogast struck out 12 batters, while holding Coker to just two baserunners — both on walks. KU, thanks to a solo homer from Denlinger in the first inning, led 1-0 from the get-go and did not distance itself from Coker until Flowers started a five-run rally. Flowers led off the seventh with a solo home run to make it 2-0, and KU closed the inning with a two-run double from Caitlin Hague (sr. Lansdale/North Penn). Tedjeske, who went 2-for-3, also singled in two runs in the inning.

       SAT 3/1 - Lincoln Memorial 3, KU 2 — KU led 2-1, but wound up falling 3-2 lost to Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University. In the second inning, RBI hits from Denlinger and Kathy Gregg (sr. Narvon/Garden Spot) helped KU take a 2-1 lead, but the Railsplitters tied it at 2 in its half of the third. Denlinger was 2-for-4 with a double, while Gregg was 1-for-3. Arbogast came on in relief in the first inning and went 2.2 innings, striking out four.

       SUN 3/2 - KU 4, Fairmont State 3 — Kim Morrison (jr. Newmarket, ONTARIO/Sir William Mulock) went 2-for-3 with a home run and Maggie Reifsnyder (fr. Philadelphia/Littleflower) hit a two-run blast in the second inning to give KU a win over Fairmont State. Mary Hoch (fr. Somerton/St.Hubert) hurled 3.1 innings, while allowing two hits, an earned run and a walk. Arbogast entered the game with one out in the fourth inning. She struck out six batters in 3.2 innings, while allowing five hits and two runs to get the win. KU had its big inning in the second frame, as Reifsnyder hit a two-out, two-run home run, to give KU the early 2-0 lead. Morrison followed with a single and was later driven in by Gregg to bring the score to 3-0.
