Men’s Basketball (19-9, 10-2 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       TUE 3/4 - MILLERSVILLE 99, KU 88 (PSAC first round) — Stephen Dennis (so. West Chester/Henderson) scored 22 points, but KU lost to Millersville in the first round of the PSAC tournament at Keystone Hall. Andre Woodlin (jr. Philadelphia/Central) had 18 points and Dave Ben (jr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 16. Ryan Washington (r-fr. Glendale/Wissahickon) had 12 points and 12 boards, while Nate Edwards (so. Philadelphia/Northeast Catholic) scored 10.

 

Women’s Bowling (43-49)

Last Week’s Action

       FRI-SUN 3/7-3/9 - 8th/12 at ECAC Championships — KU finished eighth out of 12 teams at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by New Jersey City University. KU went 2-8, with 1-4 records on both Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Bears picked up a big win in the traditional games Saturday, knocking off No. 6 New Jersey City 995-952. It was the highest-ranked opponent that KU has beaten. Steph Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) posted a career-high 242 in the win, as she averaged 183.8 Saturday — 13 pins higher than her season average. Her previous career-high was 217, which she rolled on Jan. 12. Kayla Stamm (fr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) led KU throughout the day, recording an average of 187.8 in the Golden Bears’ five matches. KU lost to No. 4 Sacred 946-872, No. 5 Fairleigh Dickinson 1,010-782, No. 14 Adelphi 892-868 and No. 19 St. Francis 902-890. Sunday’s baker games were highlighted by a 736-645 defeat of No. 10 Delaware State. KU lost to No. 17 St. Peter’s (740-636) and Howard (728-717), before losing to Delaware State 4-2 in a best-of-seven match for sixth place, and falling to St. Peters 4-3 in a best-of-seven match for seventh place.

       SAT 3/8 - Francis Marion 9, KU 0 — KU opened its spring season with a loss to No. 25 Francis Marion in Florence, S.C. Lukas Labitsch (jr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) and Arpit Sharma (so. Kolkata, INDIA) were both competitive in their doubles and singles matches, but Francis Marion held on to hand KU its first loss of the season.

       SAT 3/8 - Francis Marion 9, KU 0 — KU began its spring season, falling to No. 15 Francis Marion in Florence, S.C. The undefeated Patriots swept the doubles and single matches. Barbara Joerns (so. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) kept her No. 3 singles match close, but fell in two sets, 6-4, 6-3.

       SAT-SUN 3/8-3/9 - at Savannah Invitational

       SAT 3/8 - Armstrong Atlantic 2, KU 1 — Armstrong Atlantic State University hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to hand KU a loss in the opening game of the 2008 Savannah Invitational. Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) managed one of KU’s two hits, leading off the sixth inning with a double. He later scored on a throwing error by the third baseman to tie the game at 1-1. Garrison Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland) pitched eight-plus innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk. He struck out three. Michael Dugan (r-fr. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) had the other hit for KU, and Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) drew three walks in the game.

       SUN 3/9 - KU 8, West Liberty State 6 — Darin Gorski (so. Mount Joy/Donegal) pitched six strong innings, while Mark Renda (r-fr. Lansdale/North Penn) and Lightcap had three hits apiece to lead KU to a win over West Liberty State at the Savannah Invitational. Gorski struck out eight over six scoreless innings for the win. Lightcap was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Renda was 3-for-3 with three runs and three stolen bases. Corey Buletza (fr. St. Clair/Pottsville) had an RBI single highlighted KU’s four-run first. Trent Mertz (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) struck out two in the top of the ninth to pick up the save.

SAT 3/8 - KU 2, Mount Olive 1 — Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) struck out 11 and Krista Tedjeske (fr. Summerhill/Forest Hills) hit a bases-loaded single to lead the 10th-ranked Golden Bears over Mount Olive at the Francis Marion Patriot Invitational. Arbogast went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks. Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) went 1-for-1 with a double for KU.

SUN 3/9 - KU 11, Charleston 3 — KU erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to defeat the University of Charleston at the Francis Marion Patriot Invitational. Steph Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) hit a bases-loaded single to cap the rally and invoked the eight-run mercy rule with two out in the bottom of the fifth. Denlinger was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a home run. Maria Schiavo (so. Old Forge/Old Forge) was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sam Flowers (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) and Kim Morrison (jr. Newmarket, ONTARIO/Sir William Mulock) had homers. Lauren Doering (fr. Brampton, ONTARIO/North Park) started and went two innings, allowing two hits and a run. Mary Hoch (fr. Somerton/St. Hubert) got the win, going 2.1 innings in relief. Monica Glomb (fr. Mars/Mars) retired the last two batters in the fifth to pick up the save.

SUN 3/9 - Augusta State 5, KU 2 — KU took an early lead, but could not hold on for the victory, falling to Augusta State at the Francis Marion Patriot Invitational. Krista Cameron (jr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart) belted a two-out, two-run single in the first inning, but that was all the offense KU could muster. Cameron, Tedjeske and Steph Denlinger accounted for KU’s three hits, all singles. Arbogast saw her five-decision winning streak snapped. She struck out six over five-plus innings.
