Baseball (12-12, 2-2 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       MON 3/24 - Kutztown 10, Philadelphia 1 — KU scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning and Phillip Rummel (sr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian) allowed only one run and four hits in seven innings to pick up his third victory of the season as the Golden Bears defeated the Rams of Philadelphia University. Catcher Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey), who hit a three-run home run in the eighth and scored two runs. Jared Frey (so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two doubles in the victory. Corey Buletza (fr. St. Clair/Pottsville) and Mike Dugan (so. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) each had a pair of hits for KU.

       TUE 3/25 - KU 12, UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES 1 — Brett Wigder (fr. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) was 3-for-5 with four RBIs to lead KU over non-conference foe University of Sciences. James Quigley (fr. Bensalem/Bensalem) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Mike Moran (Fabius, N.Y./Fabius Pompey) and Mark Renda (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) had two RBIs apiece. Five KU pitchers combined on a two-hitter. Trent Mertz (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) picked up his first collegiate win, pitching three innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts. Mike Bucklin and Garrison Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland) pitched the first four innings, while Anthony Fegely (r-fr. Exeter/Exeter) and Justin Jachowicz (sr. Summit Hill/Panther Valley) pitched a scoreless frame each.

       THU 3/27 - Kutztown 13, Lebanon Valley 0 — KU won its third straight game as it blanked the Flying Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley College. KU scored 13 runs on 13 hits. Andy May (r-fr. Biglerville/Biglerville) went 3-for-5 with three base hits and an RBI, while Jeff Kistle (fr. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny) was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) and Quigley also had doubles for KU. Moran started and lasted three innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Jordan Smith (New Milford/Blue Ridge) earned his first collegiate victory, as he threw two innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. Jason Herr (Harrisburg/C.D. East) and Ryan Cassidy (Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) also threw two scoreless innings apiece.

       FRI 3/28 - vs. BLOOMSBURG (DH) ppd. 3/30

       SAT 3/29 - KU 5, Bloomsburg 1 — Golden Bears starting pitcher Darin Gorski (so. Mount Joy/Donegal) held the Huskies to four hits and helped KU win the first game of a doubleheader against Bloomsburg at North Campus Field. Gorski pitched a complete game, striking out four and allowing just one run over seven innings. Frey provided the big hit, smashing a two-RBI double to center field in the bottom of the fourth. Lightcap and Quigley each scored two runs. Kulbacki went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

       SAT 3/29 - BLOOMSBURG 1, KU 0 — The Golden Bears tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, but Bloomsburg closed the door on its 1-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader. Derick Reis (sr. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) started for KU, holding Bloomsburg to three hits and one walk over 5.2 innings, but the Golden Bears’ offense stranded eight baserunners.

       SUN 3/30 - Bloomsburg 5, KU 3 — The Golden Bears committed two errors that proved to be costly as Rausch took the hard-luck loss in the first game of a doubleheader against Bloomsburg. Rausch tossed 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, while walking one and striking out two. Four of the five runs scored by Bloomsburg were unearned. Dugan had a double and a run scored. Scott Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) had a double and two RBIs. Frey was 2-for-2 with two singles.

       SUN 3/30 - KU 10, Bloomsburg 4 — Buletza went 3-for-5 with a double and a three-run homer in the third inning to account for three of KU’s 10 runs in the Golden Bears’ win over Bloomsburg in the second game of a doubleheader. Dugan went 3-for-4 with two RBIs as KU churned out 16 hits. Rummel picked up his fourth victory of the season, hurling six innings, while allowing nine hits, three earned runs and five strikeouts. Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and Frey both had doubles, while Rausch had two singles.

       TUE 3/25 - KU 3, IUP 0 — Katlin Arbogast (so. Ambler/Wissahickon) threw a complete-game shutout, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out eight batters to pick up her 12th win of the season in the Golden Bears’ 2008 home opener. Kim Morrison (jr. Newmarket, ONT./Sir William Mulock) doubled and scored two runs. Ashley Fitzgerald (jr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) finished 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Steph Denlinger (jr. Harleysville/Souderton) went 0-for-2, but drove in two runs.

       TUE 3/25 - KU 5, IUP 1 — KU’s offense came alive late in the second game of a doubleheader against IUP, as the Golden Bears completed their sweep of the Crimson Hawks. Caitlin Hague (sr. Landsdale/North Penn) went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Krista Cameron (jr. Formosa, ONT./Sacred Heart) 1-for-2 and a run scored. Krista Tedjeske (fr. Summerhill/Forest Hills) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Monica Glomb (fr. Mars/Mars) relieved starter Mary Hoch (Somerton/St/ Hubert) with a runner on second base in the top of the fourth inning, and went on retire the side. She allowed just two hits over the final four innings, striking out two Crimson Hawks for the win.

       FRI 3/28 - KU 9, Millersville 0 (6 inn.) — The Golden Bears took an early 1-0 lead and piled on eight more runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to down the Marauders in six innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Pucillo Field. Arbogast took care of the defense, holding Millersville to just one hit and two walks. She struck out 12. KU’s offense was powered by four two-run home runs, coming off the bats of Denlinger, Cameron, Maggie Reifsnyder (fr. Philadelphia/Littleflower) and Kathy Gregg (sr. Narvon/Garden Spot). Fitzgerald finished 2-for-4 with an RBI single. Maria Schiavo (so. Old Forge/Old Forge) finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

       FRI 3/28 - KU 9, Millersville 0 (5 inn.) — The Golden Bears used two big innings and solid pitching from Hoch to defeat the Marauders in five innings in the second game of a doubleheader at Pucillo Field. Hoch held Millersville to three hits and struck out five in five innings of work. Denlinger finished 2-for-3 with six RBIs, four of which came off of her grand slam in the fourth inning. With the grand slam, she passed Kellie Evans (2000-03) to take over the career school record in RBIs. Gregg and Schiavo also had RBI singles. Hague went 3-for-3 and scored a run.

       SAT 3/29 - KU 4, MANSFIELD 3 — Fitzgerald was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead KU in a game one win over Mansfield. KU built a 3-0 lead on Cameron’s RBI single and Hague’s two-run single in the fourth. Fitzgerald’s RBI double in the fifth proved to be the game-winner, making it 4-0. Arbogast struck out eight over the first 5.1 innings to record the win (14-3). Glomb pitched the final 1.2 innings for her second save of the year.

       SAT 3/29 - KU 4, MANSFIELD 3 — Schiavo’s bases-loaded RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh gave KU a win over Mansfield in the nightcap of a doubleheader at North Campus Field. Four Golden Bears had two hits in the game. Tedjeske and Morrison both went 2-for-4, while Denlinger was 2-for-2 and Hague was 2-for-3. Morrison had an RBI, while Denlinger had two. Glomb pitched a total of four innings, going the first three before being relieved by Hoch in the fourth. Glomb re-entered to pitch the seventh and ended up as the winning pitcher.

Last Week’s Action

       WED-THU 3/26-27 - KU at Millersville Multi Meet Ian Clark (jr. Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) won the decathlon and Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western) took first in the heptathlon Wednesday and Thursday at the Millersville Multi Meet. Clark used outstanding efforts in the high jump (6-3) and long jump (20-9) to earn 5,755 points for the title. Isaac Schatz (fr. Elliottsburg/West Perry) and Tim Farrell (fr. Manasquan, NJ/Wall) came in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Schatz had 4,923 points, while Farrell had 4,659. On the women’s side, Coburn took first on the heels of solid performances in the 800 (2:27.14, and in the 200 (27.52). She finished with 3,910 points. Rebecca Kerchak (jr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) and Kayley Harmon (fr. Germansville/Northwestern Lehigh) finished right behind Colburn in second and third place with 3,330 and 2,669 points, respectively.

       FRI 3/28 - KU at the Lafayette-ESU four-way Eight hammer throwers from KU competed at the Lafayeete-ESU four-way with Jim Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) winning the competition on the men’s side with a throw of 171-10 1/2. Also earning team points for the Golden Bears were Jason Rebuck (so. Southampton/William Tennent), who placed third (165-7), and Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover, N.J./Newtown), who placed fourth (149-9 1/2). The top finisher for the women was Michelle Hughes (sr. Warminster/William Tennent), who placed seventh with a throw of 125-3.

       SAT 3/29 - KU women at Monmouth Season Opener — Three Golden Bears won their event at the Monmouth Season Opener in West Long Branch, N.J. Kelly Strickland (so. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) won the top spot in the pole vault, with a jump of 10-0. Rachel Weigle (so. Red Lion/Red Lion) also placed in the pole vault, taking fifth with a 9-6. Hailey Dell (jr. Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:12.24), while Keri Brown (fr. Southampton, N.J./Seneca) won the 800 (2:17.11). Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) finished fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:22.98. In the 100 dash, KU placed three athletes in consecutive spots. Doofan Tor-Agbidye (jr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) finished third (12.83), while Samirah Barczynski (so. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) was fourth (12.84) and Heather Spangenberg (so. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) was fifth (13.05). Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished third in the 5,000 (18:35.02), while Christina Reimer (fr. Chester Springs/Downingtown East) was fourth (18:56.02) and Kristin Green (sr. Camp Hill/Camp Hill) was eighth (19:36.36). Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) and Cheryl Dingman (jr. Lansdale/North Penn) finished back-to-back in the 1,500, with Williams taking sixth (4:53.38) and Dingman finishing seventh (4:54.91). In the field, KU’s Hughes took third in the shot put (37-11), while Ashley Pinter (fr. Bethlehem/Liberty) finished fourth (37-8). Hughes also finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 106-1. Jennifer Zook (fr. Lewistown/Indian Valley) placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 4-8. Laura Deller (sr. York/Dallastown) placed sixth in the long jump (15-8 3/4) and Alex Butler (jr. Montoursville/Montoursville) was eighth (15-8 3/4). The Kutztown ‘A’ team finished second in the 1,600 relay (4:08.66). In the 400 relay, the ‘A’ team placed fourth (50.03) and the ‘B’ team placed fifth (52.46).

       SAT 3/29 - KU men at Monmouth Season Opener Cody Hartzler (jr. Belleville/Indian Valley) was the top performer for KU, taking first in the high jump at the Monmouth Season Opener. Hartzler’s jump of 6-2 gave him the top spot in the high jump event. Also in the field, Rebuck finished fourth in the discus (145-7), while Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) was eighth (136-3). Tyson also placed eighth in the shot put (47-9), behind Dart, who was sixth (49-5). Boutsikaris finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 179-4. Michael Kramer (fr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) and Devin Peterson (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) rounded out the field events with a fourth- and fifth-place finish, respectively, in the long jump. Kramer jumped 20-3 3/4, while Peterson posted a 20-1 1/2. Kramer also finished eighth in the 100-meter dash (11.38). Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) and T.J. Longmore (so. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) were the top finishers on the track, placing third and fourth, respectively, in the 110 hurdles. Harvey finished in 15.27 seconds, while Longmore posted a time of 15.36 seconds. Harvey also placed seventh in the 400 hurdles (57.62). Kendel Dixon (so. Atglen/Octorara) took sixth in the 400 dash with a time of 50.82 seconds, and Kevin Rodgers (fr. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) placed third in the 10,000 (34:02.16). In the relays, the Kutztown ‘A’ team finished third in the 1,600 (3:24.86) and fifth in the 400 (43.71).

Last Week’s Action

       WED 3/26 - Seton Hill 11, KU 8 — The Golden Bears led at halftime, but a second-half surge powered Seton Hill past KU. Carrie Healey (so. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) scored three goals and had an assists, while Liz Lawrence (sr. Oreland/Springfield Twp.) added a goal and three assists to lead KU. Janice Kinney (so. Spring City/Owen J. Roberts) notched two goals, Kelly Lynch (fr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) had a goal and two assists, and Megan Tigue (so. Coastesville/Coatesville) netted a goal.

       SAT 3/29 - KEAN 15, KU 10 — Lynch’s hat trick wasn’t enough as the Golden Bears fell to Kean at Keystone Field. Lynch led the way for KU with three goals, while the team’s leading scorer on the season, Healey, scored two goals. Jennifer Natalini (so. Pottstown/Pottsgrove) had a goal and an assist. Alyson Iovacchini (so. East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) had 12 saves in the net for KU.

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 3/29-30 - 2nd/5 at McDaniel Spring Invitational — KU used a strong second round team performance to climb into second place at the McDaniel Spring Invitational and finished seven strokes behind event winner Allegheny College. Krista Tressler (so. Fayetteville/Heritage Academy) had an impressive second round, shooting a 79 in very windy conditions to finish fourth, and finished with a two-round score of 170. Kelli Pry (fr. Coatesville/Coatesville) shot an 83 on day two to combine for a 171 and finished in fifth. Angela Petak (sr. Brockway/Brockway) finished with a 175 and Samantha Rumbley (fr. Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) posted a 183.

Men’s Tennis (0-6, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 3/29 QUEENS COLLEGE 6, KU 3 Lukas Labitsch (jr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) and Andrew Torrealba (so. Pembrek Pines, Fla./Chales Franasan) won 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles match, but the Golden Bears fell to Queens College. Labitsch also accounted for another KU team point as he won 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles. In third doubles, Arpit Sharma (so. Kolkata, INDIA) and Sendhur Gautham (sr. Chennai, INDIA) won 8-2.
