Last Week’s Action

FRI 8/29 — Women 2nd/5 at Lehigh Valley Invitational — The Golden Bears placed five runners in the top 10, scoring 32 points, just five behind first-place finisher Lehigh University. Lafayette University was third with 77 points and Muhlenberg College (127) and Moravian College (128) rounded out the five schools competing. Cheryl Dingman (jr. Lansdale/North Penn) led the Golden Bears, placing third with a time of 22:36. Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) followed in fourth (22:45) and Kristin Cupido (so. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was sixth (22:58). Keri Brown (so. Southampton, N.J./Seneca), Cristina Reimer (so. Chester Spring/Downingtown East) and Hailey Dell (sr. Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) swept ninth through 11th place, respectively. Brown finished two seconds ahead of Reimer in 23:04 and Dell clocked in at 23:11. Kristy Ulhrich (fr. Duncannon/Susquenita) rounded out the Golden Bears’ top seven, placing 17th (23:33).

 

FRI 8/29 — Men 3rd/5 at Lehigh Valley Invitational — Ben Loht (jr. Lewistown/Indian Valley) and Kevin Rodgers (so. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) led five KU runners who placed in the top 20, giving the Golden Bears 78 points. Lehigh University and Lafayette University finished ahead of the Golden Bears with 17 and 52 points, respectively. Moravian College followed in fourth (104) and Muhlenberg College finishing fifth (129). Loht led KU runners with an 11th-place finish with a time of 26:43. Finishing 12th was teammate Rodgers at 27:17. Frank Nick (fr. Kintnersville/Palisades) and Paul Kuehnle (fr. Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) finished back-to-back with Nick placing 17th and one second ahead of Kuehnle with a time of 27:55. With a time of 28:07, Ryan Reich (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) placed 20th. Finishing with times of 30:54 and 31:01 were Jubilant Kunce (fr. Red Lion/Red Lion Area) and Steve Guthrie (fr. Chester Springs/Devon Prep) which were good for 38th and 39th place.

THU-SAT 8/28-8/30 — at Nyack Tournament

THU 8/28 — Concordia 4, KU 2 — KU opened up its 2008 season with a loss against Concordia College (N.Y.) in Nyack, N.Y. Bill Frosoni (sr. North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) and Greg Parker (fr. West Grove/Avon Grove) each had goals for the Golden Bears, with Frosoni’s tally in the 38th minute tying the game at 2, but Concordia used two late goals to pull away. Rusty Chapel (jr. Topton/Brandywine) had an assist for KU.

 

SAT 8/25 — Nyack 3, KU 2 — KU held a 2-1second-half lead, but couldn’t hold on in a loss to host Nyack. Jon Balfour (fr. London/Conestoga) scored on a one-on-one vs. the Nyack keeper at the 53:37 mark to knot the score at 1-1. Then, at the 62:39 mark, Frosoni, who assisted on Balfour’s goal, gave the Golden Bears the lead with an unassisted goal of his own. Matthew Fredericks (jr. Montdale/Lakeland) had three saves in goal for the Golden Bears.

Last Week’s Action

SAT 8/30 — Mercyhurst 2, KU 1 — KU put forth a strong defensive effort, but couldn’t overcome No. 21 Mercyhurst College in a loss at Keystone Field. The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Carolynne Kahl (so. Bethel/Tulpehocken) in the 11th minute, but Mercyhurst rebounded with a game-tying goal in the 26th minute and the game-winner in the 57th. Emily Froehlich (fr. Perkasie/Pennridge) assisted on Kahl’s goal. Steph Addleman (fr. Chambersburg/Chambersburg), making her first collegiate start, recorded eight saves for the Golden Bears.

Women’s Volleyball (2-1, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

FRI 8/28 — KU 3, Mercy College 0 — The Kutztown University women’s volleyball team opened up the 2008 season with a 3-0 win over Mercy College in the Kutztown Classic at Keystone Hall Friday.  The Golden Bears, led by 20 assists and 10 digs from Jamie Celia (so. Douglassville/Daniel Boone), won 25-11, 25-10 and 25-14 in straight sets to open the tournament. Kelsey Nester (so. Catasauqua/Catasauqua) led the offensive charge with nine kills and one block. Danielle Ozment (so. Reading/Holy Name) had six kills and Katie Miller (jr. Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) had five. Miller also had two blocks. Newcomer Cali Snell (fr. York/York Suburban) had three blocks and three kills in her first collegiate match. Lindsey Smith (fr. Hanover/Delone Catholic), at libero, had 11 digs for the Golden Bears.

 

SAT 8/30 — KU 3, Virginia State 0 — KU continued its winning ways with a victory in three sets over Virginia State. The Golden Bears ran away with the first set 25-6, and won 25-13 and 25-18 to close out the Trojans. Snell led the offense with nine kills and two blocks. Miller and Lindsay Confer (so. Wingate/Bald Eagle Area) had six kills each. Miller also had three blocks. Celia had 20 assists and four service aces. Also adding to the offense with three service aces were Nora Alexander (so. Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Smith. Smith led KU with eight digs.

 

SAT 8/30 — STONEHILL 3, KU 1 — The Golden Bears dropped their first match of the 2008 season 3-1 to Stonehill College. KU won the first set 25-19 and but dropped the final three 23-25, 20-25 and 15-25. Setter Celia had 36 assists and 17 digs. Leading the offense was Snell with nine kills and two blocks. Also, contributing offensively were Confer and Katie Lutz (Greencastle/Greencastle Antrim) with eight kills each. Lutz also had four blocks. Ozment had six kills, three service aces and 15 digs for KU.
