Cross Country

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 9/27 — Women 1st/15 at Don Cathcart Invitational — KU placed five runners in the top 10 to finish first at the Don Cathcart Invitational at Salisbury University. Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) was the Golden Bears top finisher, placing second (21:58), leading KU to its 30 points. Marietta College was second with 98 points, and the University of Mary Washington (124), Salisbury (137) and East Stroudsburg (142) rounded out the top five in the 5,290-meter race. Kristin Cupido (so. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) placed fourth (22:27) and Cristina Reimer (so. Chester Spring/Downingtown East) was sixth (22:37). Kristy Ulhrich (fr. Duncannon/Susquenita) placed eight for the Golden Bears in 22:54 and Hailey Dell (sr. Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) took 10th (23:18). Rounding out KU’s top seven were Keri Brown (so. Southampton, N.J./Seneca), who was 11th in 23:21, and Cheryl Dingman (jr. Lansdale/North Penn), who was 13th in 23:31.

       SAT 9/27 — Men 5th/13 at Salisbury Invitational — KU finished fifth at the Don Cathcart Invitational, an 8K race at Salisbury Univeristy. KU scored 166 points, behind first-place finisher East Stroudsburg, which had 46. Salisbury had 53 to take second, while the University of Mary Washington was third (82) and Virginia Wesleyan was fourth (135). Ryan Reich (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) led the Golden Bears, placing ninth with a time of 26:51. Ben Loht (jr. Lewistown/Indian Valley) took 10th with a time of 26:56. Frank Nick (fr. Kintnersville/Palisades) finished 26th (27:40), while Jubilant Kunce (fr. Red Lion/Red Lion Area) was 59th (29:46) and Steve Guthrie (fr. Chester Springs/Devon Prep) was 62nd (30:07).

Field Hockey (9-2, 2-2 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       TUE 9/23 — BLOOMSBURG 7, KU 1 — Lyndsay Butler (sr. Annandale, N.J./Summit) scored the only goal for the KU in PSAC East loss to No. 2 Bloomsburg at University Field. Butler cut Bloomsburg's early lead to 3-1 in the 27th minute, but the Huskies scored four unanswered goals in the second half for the win. KU was outshot 27-10 and was at a disadvantage in penalty corners, 16-4.

       THU 9/25 — KU 3, Mansfield 0 — The Golden Bears got goals from Jennifer Belfatti (sr. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic), Anne Waapu (so. Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) and Abbey Sheeler (so. Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) as KU blanked Mansfield in a PSAC crossover. Kelley Healey (sr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) added to her career record for assists with one helper. Emily Falko (fr. Catasauqua/Catasauqua) needed just two saves for the shutout, as KU outshot the Mountaineers 16-6 in the game.

Men’s Soccer (2-9-0, 1-4-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       MON 9/22 — KU 3, Goldey-Beacom 0 — Bill Frosoni (sr. North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield) scored a goal and had an assist to lead KU to a non-conference win over Goldey-Beacom College. Rusty Chapel (jr. Topton/Brandywine Heights) and James Robinson (so. Chester, ENGLAND) also scored goals for KU. Greg Parker (fr. West Grove/Avon Grove) and Jason Lear (jr. Montoursville/Montoursville) notched assists. Matthew Fredericks (jr. Montdale/Lakeland) had nine saves en route to the shutout victory in goal. 

       WED 9/24 — PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY 4, KU 0 — KU was shut out in a non-conference game against Philadelphia University at Keystone Field. The Golden Bears allowed two early first-half goals, separated by less than two minutes, and the Rams added two more in a span of four minutes midway through the second half to secure the win.

       SAT 9/27 — California (Pa.) 4, KU 0 — California (Pa.) scored two goals in each half en route to a shutout win over KU in a PSAC crossover. Fredericks had four saves for the Golden Bears, who were outshot 28-10 in the game.

Women’s Soccer (5-3-1, 3-2-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       TUE 9/23 — KU 3, MANSFIELD 1 — Chelsea Bressler (fr. Cleona/Annville-Cleona) scored two goals as KU defeated Mansfield in a PSAC East contest at Keystone Field. Mansfield opened the scoring in the third minute, but Bressler rallied the Golden Bears back, tying the score in the 30th minute off a pass from Jen Tice (so. Barnegat, N.J./Sourthern Regional) on an indirect kick. She scored the game-winner unassisted five minutes later. Bressler helped KU get an insurance goal in the second half, drawing a foul in the box. Carolynne Kahl (so. Bethel/Tulpehocken) stepped in to take the penalty kick and with a shot to the lower-right side, KU went up 3-1 at the 53:29 mark. Steph Addleman (fr. Chambersburg/Chambersburg) made four saves for KU to collect her fourth win in goal.

       SAT 9/27 — KU 2, Davis & Elkins 1 (2 OT) — KU topped Davis & Elkins in double overtime of a non-conference match. The Golden Bears fell behind 1-0 late in the first half, but tied the match at one apiece on a goal by Bressler. Kahl had the assist. After 16 minutes of scoreless overtime, the duo of Kahl and Bressler struck again. This time Kahl with the goal and Bressler the assist for the game-winner. Addleman had nine saves for the Golden Bears, five of which came in the second half and two in the first overtime.

       SAT-MON 9/27-9/29 — at ITA Regionals (at Bloomsburg) — Inclement weather has forced this tournament to continue play on Monday. Results will be available on KUBears.com and in next week’s roundup.

Women’s Volleyball (10-7, 1-3 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       THU 9/25 — BLOOMFIELD cancelled

       FRI-SAT 9/26-9/27 — at California (Pa.) Tournament

       FRI 9/26 — KU 3, Mercyhurst 2 — KU opened the California (Pa.) Tournament with a victory over Mercyhurst, winning 15-11 in the tiebreaking set. The Golden Bears dropped the first set 25-16, then took the next two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-17. The Lakers won the fourth set 25-18 to force a fifth and final set. Leading KU was Lindsay Confer (so. Wingate/Bald Eagle Area) with 12 kills. Danielle Ozment (so. Reading/Holy Name) and Katie Miller (jr. Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) each had seven kills, Miller also added three blocks. Jamie Celia (so. Douglassville/Daniel Boone) set the offense with 31 assists and added 10 digs. Libero Lindsey Smith (fr. Hanover/Delone Catholic) led the team with 16 digs.

       SAT 9/27 — California (Pa.) 3, KU 0 — KU was swept in three sets by host California (Pa.) with scores of 25-11, 25-21 and 25-12. Kelsey Nester (so. Catasauqua/Catasauqua) had three kills and one block for the Golden Bears. Smith had 18 digs and Celia had 11 digs.

       SAT 9/27 — Indianapolis 3, KU 0 — KU fell in straight sets 25-17, 25-8 and 25-6 to Indianapolis in the final match of the California (Pa.) Tournament. Smith had nine digs and Nester added six digs.
