Cross Country

Last Week’s Action

        SAT 11/22 — Joanna Horstmann at NCAA Championships (at Slippery Rock) Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) closed out her cross country career at Kutztown University with a 50th-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships at Slippery Rock University. Horstmann, the lone KU representative in a field of 189 women, ran the 6K course in 23:02. She now has finished 46th, 48th, 50th and 69th at the NCAA Division II Championships in her four years. The KU senior runner became the first student-athlete in school history to earn All-PSAC and All-Region honors four times.

Men’s Basketball (2-0, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

        WED 11/19 — KU 99, Wilmington (Del.) 64 — Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson) and Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) combined for 53 points to lead KU to a season-opening win at Wilmington University. Dennis scored 29 points, one short of his career high, hitting 9-of-13 from the field and all 10 free-throw attempts. He added five assists and five steals. Ben scored 24 points, hitting 10-of-20 field goals and three 3-pointers. He also dished out eight assists. Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon) rounded out KU’s scoring leaders with 12 points.

        SAT 11/22 — KU 79, University of the Sciences 65 — Dennis led five players in double-digits as KU defeated the University of the Sciences at Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. Dennis scored a game-high 22 points, making 10-of-15 shots from the field, including a 2-for-2 showing from beyond the arc. Ben finished with 17 points, Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central) had 14 and Washington and Julius Gray (so. Lincoln/Oxford) each had 10. Ben and Washington each had five rebounds.

Last Week’s Events

        SAT 11/22 — KU 64, University of the Sciences 52 — Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) led KU to a win over the University of the Sciences at Morgan Arena in Philadelphia. Wisemiller scored a team-high 15 points and had four 3-pointers in the non-conference win. Meredith Starr (so. Richmond, Va./Monacan) had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists. Melissa McQuade (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) led the team in rebounds with seven, assists with four and steals with three. Chauntelle Schroeder (jr. Toronto, Ont./Mother Theresa) scored nine points and had six rebounds.

Last Week’s Action

        FRI-SUN 11/21-23 — at Eastern Shore Hawk Classic — KU went 15-3 to finish second at Eastern Shore Hawk Classic hosted by the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Golden Bears knocked down 16,009 pins, second to Vanderbilt, which had 16,366 pins. Delaware State (15,821), Maryland Eastern-Shore (15,810), and Fairleigh Dickinson (15,466) rounded out the top five of the 20-team tournament. Kayla Jones (fr. Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) and Kayla Stamm (so. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) were selected to the All-Classic team for KU with 204.5 and 202 averages, respectively. Stephanie Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) finished sixth and Jacquelyn Heimbach (sr. Easton/Easton) finished in 15th place for individual play.

        The Golden Bears finished baker match competition 5-1 on Friday. KU defeated Bethune-Cookman (1,030-782), St. Paul’s (967-759), 22nd-ranked Morgan St. (924-753), No. 8-ranked New Jersey City (989-859) and Cheyney (868-468). No. 1-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore defeated KU 993-920.

        KU went 6-0 Saturday in traditional play, including the program’s first win over Fairleigh Dickinson, a 1,058-889 win. It was one of four matches in which KU knocked down than 1,000 pins. KU (27-9) also won 1,023-742 over Bowie State, 1,013-938 over Delaware State, 1,010-787 over Elizabeth City, 885-694 over Howard and 886-790 over Adelphi.

        On Sunday, KU topped Long Island University in the first match of baker competition by a score of 675-408. The Golden Bears dropped the next match against No. 17 ranked Saint Peter’s 706-676. In the third match, KU rolled the tournament-high 868 pins in their win over No. 19-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.), which had a 689. No. 2 ranked Vanderbilt downed KU 816-697 in the fourth match of the day. KU won 783-720 over Hampton University, 737-697 over No. 6-ranked Sacred Heart.

Men’s Swimming (4-1, 3-1 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

        FRI-SAT 11/21-22 — 2nd/5 Golden Bear Invitational — KU used three first-place finishes in individual events to place second at the 2008 Golden Bear Invitational at Keystone Hall. Gabriel Recio (so. Lancaster/Hempfield), Nelson Martinez (sr. Allentown/Dieruff) and Jack Crellin (fr. Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) each recorded first-place finishes, helping KU score 646 points. Stevens Institute of Technology finished with 705 points to take first. Montclair State University. was third with 376 points and Salisbury University (256) and Ocean County College (113) rounded out the five teams competing. Recio won the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 56.17 seconds. Martinez took the top spot in the 200 breast (2:20.78). Crellin took first place in the 200 IM (2:02.22) and in the 200 backstroke (1:59.60). He also led the 800 freestyle relay, competing with teammates John Pandish (sr. Milford/Delaware Valley), Derek Orr (sr. Easton/Easton) and Stephen Krater (jr. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area), to finish first in 7:13.24.

Women’s Swimming (6-2, 4-2 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

        FRI-SAT 11/21-22 — 2nd/5 Golden Bear Invitational — KU  finished second at the 2008 Golden Bear Invitational at Keystone Hall. Steph Jeppesen (jr. Bethlehem/Liberty) set two pool records, winning the 100 breaststroke (1:06.91) and the 200-yard breaststroke in an NCAA B-cut time of 2:23.64 — also a school record . Alex Crigler (so. West Lawn/Wilson High School) and Jordan Shapiro (fr. Trenton N.J./Princeton) each had first-place wins. Crigler finished first in the 1,650 free relay in a time of 18:17.21 and Shapiro also earned a first-place finish in 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.13 — a meet and pool record. KU also earned the top spot in the 400 medley relay with Allison Sheely (so. Enola/Trinity), Laura Heebner (sr. Easton/Easton), Jeppesen and Shapiro swimming it 4:06.55. KU scored 620.5 points to finish behind Stevens Institute of Technology (666.5). Montclair State University had 306, Salisbury University 247, East Stroudsburg University 242 and Ocean County College 44 to round out the teams competing.

Wrestling (2-1)

Last Week’s Events

        SAT 11/22 — KU 2-1 at Messiah Duals — KU picked up two wins at the Messiah Duals with its lower weights leading the way in the victories. KU opened the duals with a 21-18 win over Seton Hill and a 23-12 win over Messiah, but lost to Lycoming 30-17. Joe Kemmerer (sr. Mountain Top/Crestwood) and John Paukovits (so. Northampton/Northampton) went 3-0 on the day. Brett Martinez (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh), Chris Chambers (sr. Holland/Council Rock South), Sonny Flood (sr. Southampton/William Tennent) and Cory Rutt (fr. Easton/Easton) finished 2-1. Kemmerer, at 133 pounds, had two major decisions and a technical fall. He did not allow a point in all three bouts. Paukovits also managed a major decision at 141 pounds, recorded a technical fall and a pin. Chambers, at 149 pounds, had two decisions. Martinez had a major decision and a decision. Flood, at 165, and Rutt, at heavyweight, each picked up their two victories via decisions. Clayton Youtz (fr. Dauphin/Central Dauphin), at 125, Bobby Mort (fr. Huntingdon/Huntingdon), at 184, also picked up decisions.
