Men’s Basketball (6-0, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 12/3 — KU 97, CHESTNUT HILL 77 — Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson) scored his 1,000th point as KU routed Chestnut Hill at Keystone Hall in a non-conference game. Dennis, who scored 28 points, pushed his career total to 1,001 with a layup underneath with 3:24 left. Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central) finished with 19 points, Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) had 15 and Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon) and Julius Gray (so. Lincoln/Oxford) each had 12. Ben also led KU with nine assists and eight rebounds.

       SAT 12/6 — KU 90, Penn State-Berks 49 Ben led KU with a game-high 24 points in a win over Penn State-Berks at the Beaver Community Center. Dennis and Woodlin also finished in double digits with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Dennis and Washington led the team in rebounding with seven each. KU forced Penn State-Berks to turn the ball over 30 times and recorded 21 steals — Ben had a career-high nine. Gray made three 3-pointers and the Golden Bears shot 16-of-20 from the free-throw line.

Women’s Basketball (6-0, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 12/3 — KU 72, Columbia Union 37 — Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) and Melissa McQuade (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) scored 17 points apiece to lead KU to a non-conference win at Columbia Union. McQuade also pulled down 10 rebounds. Katie Dovey (jr. Willow Hill/Fannett-Metal) had 11 points and Brittany Le Van (fr. Centre Hall/Penns Valley) scored 10 for the Golden Bears.

       SAT 12/6 —  KU 74, Penn State-Berks 38 — McQuade recorded her fourth double-double of the season and Wisemiller led KU with 16 points in a win over Penn State-Berks at the Beaver Community Center. McQuade scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds for the Golden Bears, who took a 51-15 halftime lead in the non-conference contest. Le Van also had 16 points and Hannah Mertz (fr. Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) had 10. Meredith Starr (so. Richmond, Va./Monacan) recorded career highs in assists with nine and steals with six.

Men’s Swimming (4-1, 3-1 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 12/6-7 — 2nd/8 at Franklin & Marshall Invite — The KU men’s team finished in second out of eight teams at the Franklin and Marshall Invitational. Host Franklin & Marshall finished ahead of the Golden Bears with 683 points to KU’s 612.5. Rowan (521), Widener (383.5) and Swarthmore (350) rounded out the top-five finishers. KU got a first-place finish from John Pandish (sr. Milford/Delaware Valley) in the 400 IM (4:17.64) and Jack Crellin (fr. Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) in the 100 back (53.24).  Pandish also claimed second place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.59. Crellin finished second in the 200 back (1:55.44). He also finished in second in the 500 free with a time of 4:51.94. In the 1,650 free, Joe Lahovski (fr. Allentown/Emmaus) took second place, posting a time of 17:06.00. The relay team of Crellin, Stephen Krater (jr. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area), Derek Orr (sr. Easton/Easton) and Pandish took first in the 800 freestyle.

Women’s Swimming (6-2, 4-2 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

        SAT-SUN 12/6-7 — 1st/9 at Franklin & Marshall Invite — The KU women’s team finished first in the nine-team field at Franklin & Marshall Invitational. The Golden Bears finished with 773 points, more than 200 points ahead of second-place Franklin & Marshall (530.5). Rowan (468), St. Mary’s (400) and Marymount (362.5) rounded out the top five. Steph Jeppesen (jr. Bethlehem/Liberty), won three individual events and four relays. She set new school records in the 100 breast (1:06.10), also an NCAA B-time provisional qualifier, and the 200 breast (2:21.86), an NCAA-A time automatic qualifier. Jeppesen also won the 200 IM (2:10.74). Laura Heebner (sr. Easton/Easton) and Alex Crigler (so. West Lawn/Wilson) also set new school records. Heebner placed first in the 400 IM (4:46.34) and Crigler won the 1,650 free (17:53.87). Crigler also won the 500 free (5:16.31). Jordan Shapiro (fr. Trenton, N.J./Princeton) took the top spot in the 50 free (24.96) and Nicole Hinsdale (fr. Glen Mills/Bayard Rustin) won the 200 free (1:58.90). Hinsdale, Jeppesen, Shapiro and Allison Sheely (so. Enola/Trinity) placed first in the 200 medley relay (1:50.55), the 400 relay (3:40.34) and the 800 free relay (8:06.13). Heebner joined Shapiro, Jeppesen and Sheely to win the 400 medley relay 4:01.85.

       SAT 12/6 — KU women at Bucknell Opener — Ashley Pinter (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) finished sixth in the shot put (41-2 1/4) and in the 20-pound weight throw (49-11 1/4). Melissa Fellenbaum (fr. Landisville/Hempfield), Kelly Strickland (jr. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) and Rachel Weigle (jr. Red Lion/Red Lion) tied for third in the pole vault (9-10). In the 3,000-meter, Cheryl Dingman (jr. Lansdale/North Penn) finished in second (10:36.66). Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western) placed third in the heptathlon with 2,715 points. Jasmine Lockhart (fr. Wernersville/Conrad Weiser) placed fifth with 2,389 points.

       SAT 12/6 — KU men at Bucknell Opener — Kendel Dixon (jr. Atglen/Octarora) finished in fifth in the 400 (50.73). Craig Sherwood (fr. Perkasie/Pennridge) placed third in the pole vault with 14-3 1/4. William Hodges (jr. Levittown/Neshaminy) and Justin Germani (so. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) tied for sixth (13-9 1/4). Chris Boutsikaris (sr. Newton, N.J./Newton) finished fourth (54-0) in the 35-pound throw. Jason Rebuck (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) was seventh (50-1 3/4). In the 1,600 relay, Dixon, Shaun Crump (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown), Cody Hartzler (sr. Belleville/Indian Valley) and Joseph Tavormina (fr. Hellertown/Saucon Valley) finished in sixth (3:28.68).

Wrestling (3-1-1)

Last Week’s Events

       SAT 12/6 — 8th/10 at PSAC Championships (at Mercyhurst) — Joe Kemmerer (sr. Mountaintop/Crestwood) kept the streak going, finishing 4-0 and in first place at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. Kemmerer became KU’s first PSAC wrestling champion since 1942, picking up the title with a 2-1 tiebreaker decision over a two-time defending champion and the 133-pound bracket’s top seed. Kemmerer started with a 16-0 technical fall, added a pin and then used a 3-0 decision in the semifinals to advance to the final. Kemmerer joins KU Athletics Hall of Famers Bruce Becker (1942) and Edward Osinski (1941, 1942) as a PSAC Champion. In the 197-pound bracket, Scott Snyder (jr. Slatington/Northen Lehigh) finished fifth place. John Paukovits (so. Northampton/Northampton), at 141, and Chris Chambers (sr. Holland/Council Rock South), at 157, finished in sixth place.
