Men’s Basketball (16-3, 5-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 1/28 — KU 97, West Chester 71 — Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored a career-high 36 points, including a school-record eight 3-point field goals, as KU routed West Chester in PSAC East game at Hollinger Fieldhouse. Ben was 12-of-16 from the floor and hit 8-for-9 3-point attempts, breaking KU's single-game record of seven held by five players. He was also 4-for-4 from the line and led all players with seven assists. Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central) scored 24 points, hitting 10-of-13 field goals and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon) scored 13 points. KU shot 62 percent in the game, including a blistering 74 percent in the second half. KU missed only seven shots after halftime, turning a 43-30 lead at the break into the 26-point rout.

       SAT 1/31 — KU 88, BLOOMSBURG 63 Ben scored 31 points to lead KU past Bloomsburg University in a PSAC East contest at Keystone Hall. Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson) scored 20 points and Washington had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ben, who had five of KU’s 18 steals, scored 19 in the first half. KU went to the line 30 times, making 18 free throws. Ben led the way, making 8-of-10, while Washington was 6-of-7 from the stripe. Ben also had three 3-pointers.

Women’s Basketball (15-4, 5-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 1/28 — KU 67, West Chester 60 — KU erased a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat West Chester in PSAC East game at Hollinger Fieldhouse. Katie Dovey (jr. Willow Hill/Fannett-Metal) scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Golden Bears. Melissa McQuade (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) added 17. With the win, KU snapped a five-game losing streak vs. West Chester and a 10-game skid at Hollinger Fieldhouse.

       SAT 1/31 — KU 66, BLOOMSBURG 56 — McQuade paced KU's offense with 18 points in a PSAC East win over Bloomsburg at Keystone Hall. McQuade also hauled in 15 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. KU had 11-point performances from both Vivian Melvin (jr. Chichester/Chichester) and Chauntelle Schroeder (jr. Toronto, Ontario/Mother Teresa Catholic). Melvin also had eight rebounds. Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) and Meredith Starr (so. Richmond, Va./Monacan) each netted eight points. Wisemiller had four blocks and five rebounds for the Golden Bears.

Bowling (56-22, 5-1 NEC)

Last Week’s Action

       FRI-SUN 1/30-2/1 — 4th/24 at KUTZTOWN INVITATIONAL — KU finished fourth of 24 teams at the KU Invitational, a three-day event hosted by the Golden Bears at Bowl-O-Rama and Hiester Lanes. In Friday’s baker matches, KU lost to Sacred Heart 767-666, defeated Bowie State 683-604, lost to Fairleigh Dickinson 709-698, and defeated New Jersey City 786-691 and Medaille 731-678. On Saturday in traditional matchups, KU won its first four matches, defeating Saint Peter's (884-783), Bowie State (922-598), Delaware State (972-899) and Morgan State (984-932). KU then dropped a hard-fought 983-949 decision to Fairleigh Dickinson. KU bounced back with a win over Norfolk State (892-859). Janaya Buck (fr. Northumberland/Shikellamy) led KU, averaging 194.3 pins in six matches. She finished eighth. Kayla Stamm (so. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) averaged 187.5 pins for 15th place. Stephanie Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) (185.7, 17th), Jacquelyn Heimbach (sr. Easton/Easton) (184.2, 18th) and Kayla Jones (fr. Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) (182.2, 21st) rounded out KU's results. On Sunday, KU lost to eventual champion Delaware State 4-1 in the semifinals, before losing to New Jersey City 4-1 in the third-place match. Delaware State defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3, in the championship match. Earlier on Sunday, KU won three baker matches over Lincoln (731-465), St. Paul's (677-548) and Coppin State (690-567).

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 1/31 — KU 142, MILLERSVILLE 106 — Stephanie Jeppesen (jr. Bethlehem/Liberty) set a new Keystone Hall pool record in the 200 breaststroke as the KU women’s team defeated Millersville University. KU reached the 10-win plateau for the first time in school history, winning nine of 14 events. Jeppesen swam the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.93, breaking the old pool record of 2:23.59 set by Brooke Heath, of Edinboro, in November 2007. Alex Crigler (so. West Lawn/Wilson High School), Jordan Shapiro (fr. Trenton N.J./Princeton) and Allison Sheely (so. Enola/Trinity) each won multiple events for the Golden Bears. Crigler won the 500 and 1,650 freestyle events, with times of 5:25.93 and 18:09.33, respectively. Shapiro won the 50 free (26.06) and the 200 free (2:05.05), while taking second in the 100 free. Sheely swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 1:02.45 and the 200 in 2:17.43. Heather Wolkom (jr. Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven) picked up a first-place victory in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:11.08. KU also won the 200 medley relay as Jeppesen, Shapiro, Laura Heebner (sr. Easton/Easton) and Katie Kelly (so. Downingtown/Downingtown) took first in 1:56.32.

       FRI-SAT 1/30-31 — KU women at Bison Open — Melissa Fellenbaum (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) topped the KU women’s team’s performance at the Bison Open at Bucknell University. Fellenbaum finished tied for first in the pole vault (10-10). Rachel Weigle (jr. Red Lion/Red Lion) finished third behind Fellenbaum with a vault of 10-4. Kristin Cupido (so. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) took fifth in the 5,000 (18:14.72) and Kristy Ulrich (fr. Duncannon/Susquenita) finished eighth (18:38.82). Ashley Pinter (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) finished second in the weight throw (50-5 1/4) and fifth in the shot put (39-10 1/2). Jill Kostishion (fr. Hilltown/Pennridge) had a second-place finish in the 500, with a time of 1:22.73. Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) had a fourth-place finish in the mile, posting a time of 5:09.91.

       FRI-SAT 1/30-31 — KU men at Bison Open — Cody Hartzler (sr. Belleville/Indian Valley) led the KU men's team with one of its two second-place finishes at the Bison Open, recording a jump of 6-6 1/4 in the high jump. Jason Rebuck (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 52-4 1/2. Chris Boutsikaris (sr. Newton, N.J./Newton) was fourth with a throw of 51-5 1/2. In the 400, Kendel Dixon (jr. Atglen/Octorara) claimed third with a time of 50.62. T.J. Longmore (jr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) scored a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.58). Justin Germani (so. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) was fourth in the pole vault (14-3 1/4). Matt Bailey (fr. Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) placed in sixth in the 500 with a time of 1:13.69.

Wrestling (7-5-1)

Last Week’s Events

       SAT 1/31 — KU 2-1 at Gettysburg Duals — KU won two and lost one at the Gettysburg Duals. KU defeated Gettysburg 41-9 and Plymouth State 25-15, while falling 18-16 to Wilkes. Sonny Flood (sr. Southampton/William Tennent), Brett Martinez (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) and David Zeek (jr. Newtown/Council Rock North) led the way, going 3-0 in the respective weight class. Flood picked up big 10-4 and 9-4 decisions at 174 pounds in KU’s wins, as well as a 3-1 decision in their loss to Wilkes. Zeek won three major decisions at 165 pounds, and Martinez had two decisions and a win by forfeit at 149. Scott Snyder (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh), at 197, and Eric Sergent (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth), at 184, went 2-0, and John Paukovits (so. Northampton/Northampton), at 141, and Clayton Youtz (fr. Dauphin/Central Dauphin), at 125, finished 2-1. Bobby Mort (fr. Huntingdon/Huntingdon) and Cory Rutt (fr. Easton/Easton) also picked up wins for KU.
