WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (18-3, 7-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

         WED 2/4 — KU 75, Cheyney 73 — Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson) led four KU players in double figures with 28 points as the Golden Bears defeated Cheyney at Cope Hall. Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 17, Mark Bower (sr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) had 13 and Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central) added 10 for KU. Ben’s two free throws with 1:03 remaining gave KU the lead for good.

         SAT 2/7 — KU 93, EAST STROUDSBURG 70 — Woodlin scored a team-high 26 points and had 10 rebounds as KU defeated East Stroudsburg University at Keystone Hall. Ben also had 25 points, including six 3-pointers. Dennis had 18 points for KU, which used a 25-7 run to take a 29-point lead with 13:10 left. Dennis also had nine rebounds and six assists. Woodlin tied his career-high in assists with seven.

Women’s Basketball (16-5, 6-2 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

         WED 2/4 — Cheyney 83, KU 76 — Four players finished in double-digits, but KU fell to Cheyney University at Cope Hall. Lara Dellegrotti (sr. Berwick/Berwick), who hit three 3-pointers, led the Golden Bears with 15 points. Melissa McQuade (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) and Chauntelle Schroeder (jr. Toronto, Ont./Mother Theresa) scored 14, and Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points. McQuade also had nine rebounds and five assists.

         SAT 2/7 — KU 67, EAST STROUDSBURG 59 Wisemiller scored 17 points and hit four 3-pointers as KU defeated East Stroudsburg University at Keystone Hall. Wisemiller’s 3-pointer with 10:43 left in the second half broke a 42-42 tie and sparked a 9-3 run. Schroeder finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, and Katie Dovey (jr. Willow Hill/Fannett-Metal) had 13 points. Wisemiller had four 3-pointers, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Meredith Starr (so. Richmond, Va./Monacan) finished with a team-high six assists.

Bowling (61-27, 5-1 NEC)

Last Week’s Action

         SAT-SUN 2/7-2/8 — 6th/14 at Capital Classic (at Delaware State) — KU finished 5-5 and in sixth place at the Capitol Classic. Fairleigh Dickinson finished first, followed by host Delaware State. KU went 4-1 in individual matches Saturday and 1-4 in baker matches Sunday. KU's only loss Saturday was to Delaware State (1,041-878). The Golden Bears rattled off consecutive wins over St. Francis (969-856), Coppin State (917-779), Saint Peter's (845-713) and Howard (912-728). KU was led by Kayla Jones (fr. Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop), who averaged 199.2 pins in five games, with a game-high of 216 vs. Coppin. Jacquelyn Heimbach (sr. Easton/Easton) averaged 186.8, boosted by a 246 rolled against St. Francis. On Sunday, KU defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore (807-754) and lost to Fairleigh Dickinson (717-696) in four-game baker matches. In best-of-seven play, KU lost to Maryland-Eastern Shore (4-3), New Jersey City (4-1) and Sacred Heart (4-3).

Men’s Swimming (7-3, 2-3 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 2/7 — KU 141.5, Rowan 120.5 — The KU men’s swim team defeated Rowan at Keystone Hall.          Jack Crellin (fr. Pittsburgh/North Allegheny), Stephen Krater (jr. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area) Joe Lahovski (fr. Allentown/Emmaus) and David Shedleski (fr. Mechanicsburg/Trinity) each took first in two events for the Golden Bears. Crellin took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.41 and in the 200 back with a time of  2:00.08. Taking second-place in the 200 back was Scott Thomas (sr. Schuylkill Haven/Blue Mountain), posting a time of 2:03.51. Krater claimed the top spot in 100 free (50.72) and the 200 free (1:49.19). Derek Orr (sr. Easton/Easton) was narrowly edged out by Krater in the 100 free, with a time of 50.74. Lahovski finished in first with a time of 10:12.38 in the 1,000 free. He also finished in the top spot in the 500 free, posting a time of 5:01.40. In the 100 breast, Shedleski finished in first with a time of 1:03.00. He also finished in first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:18.28, Jeff Travor (so. Quakertown/Quakertown Community) followed with a time of 2:19.46.

Women’s Swimming (11-3, 7-3 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 2/7 — KU 152, Rowan 104 — The KU women’s swim team defeated Rowan University 152-104 at Keystone Hall. The Golden Bears extended their school-record in wins to 11. The 200-yard medley relay was won by the team of Allison Sheely (so. Enola/Trinity), Stephanie Jeppesen (jr. Bethlehem/Liberty), Nicole Hinsdale (fr. Glen Mills/Bayard Rustin) and Jordan Shapiro (fr. Trenton N.J./Princeton) with a time of 1:53.38. Individually, Jeppesen also finished first in the 100 breast (1:07.98) and the 200 breast (2:25.34). Also with two individual first-place finishes was Hinsdale. She took the top spot with a time of 2:02.45 in the 200 free, with Kerry Choplin (so. Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford) in second (2:03.88). Hinsdale finished on top in the 200 back with a time of 2:15.11. Alex Crigler (so. West Lawn/Wilson High School) took first in the 500 freestyle (5:23.93) and the 1,000 free (10:52.80). In the 1,000, Heather Wolkom (jr. Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven) came in second place with a time of 11:09.38. Sheely came in first place in the 100 back with a time of  1:03.07, followed by Shapiro at 1:03.48. Sheely finished first in the 100 free, posting a time of 55.74. Rounding out the first-place finishers for KU were Shapiro and Laura Heebner (sr. Easton/Easton). Shapiro took first in the 50 free (26.35), just ahead of teammate Katie Kelly (so. Downingtown/Downingtown), who had a time of 26.69. Heebner took the top spot in the 200 fly with a time of 2:17.97.

Indoor Track and Field

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 2/7 — KU women at DeSchriver Invitational (at East Stroudsburg) — Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) set a new school record in the 1,000-meter run, placing first as the KU women’s team competed at the DeSchriver Invitational. Horstmann’s time of 2:59.80 was good enough for the record and the only first-place finish. Melissa Fellenbaum (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) and Stephanie Grimm (fr. Fleetwood/Oley Valley) had second-place finishes for KU, with Fellenbaum scoring a 10-6 in the pole vault and Grimm running the mile in 5:25.60. Cristina Reimer (so. Chester Springs/Downingtown East) was fifth in the mile (5:29.54). Brooke Mathews (fr. Reedsville/Indian Valley), Katie Quinn (jr. Glenolden/Interboro) and Christina Costanzo (fr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) had multiple top-eight finishes for KU. Mathews placed third in the 200 (26.89), sixth in the 55 dash (7.69) and tied for fifth in the long jump (16-0). Quinn was fourth in the 200 (26.93) and fifth in the 55 dash (7.62). Costanzo was fourth in the long jump (16-6) and fifth in the triple jump 33-8. Quinn, teamed with Horstmann, Doofan Tor-Agbidye (sr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) and Rachel Hunte (fr. Chester Springs/Downingtown East), placed second in the 1,600 relay (4:12.23). Tor-Agbidye also placed fifth in the 400 (1:02.59). Jill Kostishion (fr. Hilltown/Pennridge) was third in the 500 (1:23.40) and Jessica Schlecter (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks South) placed third in the 800 (2:24.23). Jenn Zook (so. Lewistown/Indian Valley) tied for seventh in the high jump (4-11) and Hailey Dell (sr. Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) was eighth in the 1,000 (3:24.17).

       SAT 2/7 — KU men at DeSchriver Invitational (at East Stroudsburg) — T.J. Longmore (jr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) collected a first-place finish and Shane Harvey (so. Pattenburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) had one of five second-place finishes for the KU men’s team at the DeSchriver Invitational. Longmore finished first in the 55-meter hurdles (7.98), ahead of second-place finisher Harvey (8.04). Cody Hartzler (sr. Belleville/Indian Valley), Shaun Crump (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown), and Craig Sherwood (fr. Perkasie/Pennridge) also nabbed second-place finishes for KU. Hartzler was second in the high jump (6-3). Crump was the runner-up in the 500 (1:08.34), and teammate Matt Reightler (so. Bethlehem/Northampton) was fifth (1:09.60). Sherwood was second in the pole vault (14-6), beating out teammates Justin Germani (so. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone), who was fourth (14-6), and William Hodges (jr. Levittown/Neshaminy), who tied for eighth (13-0). The KU 1,600 relay team, comprised of Kendel Dixon (jr. Atglen/Octorara), Ryan Reich (fr. Oley/Oley Valley), Harvey and Crump, finished second (3:28.87). Dixon finished fourth in the 200 (22.95) and Reich was fifth in the 1,000 (2:39.23).

Wrestling (8-7-1)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 2/4 — KU 28, MILLERSVILLE 9 — KU rolled to a win over PSAC foe Millersville on senior night at Keystone Hall. Joe Kemmerer (sr. Mountaintop/Crestwood) and John Paukovits (so. Northampton/Northampton) notched consecutive technical falls at 133 and 141, respectively, to lead the Golden Bears. Bret Martinez (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh), at 149, Chris Chambers (sr. Holland/Council Rock South), at 157, Eric Sergent (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth) at 184 and Scott Snyder (jr. Slatington/Northen Lehigh), at 197, won by decisions for KU. Cory Rutt (fr. Easton/Easton) received a forfeit win at 285.

       SAT 2/7 — 0-2 at Mercyhurst, with Gannon —  KU dropped two contests to Mercyhurst and Gannon. KU opened the tri-meet with a 21-17 loss to Mercyhurst and followed it with a 37-3 loss to Gannon. Snyder, at 197 pounds, was the only Golden Bear to go undefeated on the day, winning two decisions. Snyder won a 10-6 decision to cut KU’s deficit to 18-17, but the Lakers sealed the win with a decision at heavyweight. KU got a pin from Martinez, at 149,  and major decisions by Paukovits, at 141, and Sonny Flood (sr. Southampton/William Tennent), at 174. Snyder won 6-4 in the Golden Bears’ loss to Gannon.

SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (2-2, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

        SAT 2/7 — Barton 6, KU 5 — Darin Gorski (jr. Mount Joy/Donegal) pitch six solid innings and Matt Kulbacki (jr. Hershey/Hershey) hit a three-run home run, but it wasn’t enough as KU fell to Barton in the first game of a doubleheader. Kulbacki’s three-run homer in the fourth, coupled with a two-run double by Jared Frey (jr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) in the fifth gave KU a 5-0 lead. Gorski held Barton at bay for five innings before allowing a run in the sixth. He finished with four strikeouts and one run on five hits over six innings. Corey Buletza (so. St. Clair/Pottsville) finished 3-for-4 with a runs scored, and Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) each had a hit and a run scored. Lightcap also stole a base. Jeff Kistle (so. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny) singled and Michael Dugan (so. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) walked and scored a run.

       SAT 2/7 — KU 7, Barton 4 — Frey went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs as KU won 7-4 over Barton in the second game of their doubleheader. Kacelowicz and Shayne Houck (fr. Barto/Boyertown) also hit home runs for the Golden Bears. It was Houck’s first in a collegiate game. Mike Bucklin (jr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) started on the mound for KU, giving up four runs — three earned — and seven hits over 3 1/3 innings of work. Jordan Smith (so. New Milford/Blue Ridge), who got the win, and Adam Maini (jr. Macungie/Emmaus) pitched shutout ball in relief, giving up just three hits over 3 2/3 innings. Maini struck out three in two innings. Kacelowicz finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Dugan was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Lightcap walked and scored a run.

       SUN 2/8 — KU 5, Barton 3 — Kistle and Lightcap each had home runs as the Golden Bears defeated Barton College. Kulbacki was hit by a pitch and scored on an error. Trent Mertz (so. Kutztown/Kutztown) recorded his first save of the season, pitching 2/3 of an inning. His save gave the win to Ryan Cassidy (jr. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood), who pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks. Kacelowicz went 2-for-4, and Frey and Dugan also scored runs for KU.

       SUN 2/8 — Barton 4, KU 2 — The Golden Bears held a 2-0 lead through 4 1/2 innings, but Barton scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth to solidify a 4-2 win. Frey was 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Buletza, Kacelowicz and Lightcap each had hits for KU. Buletza and Kacelowicz were 1-for-3, with Kacelowicz hitting a double and scoring a run, and Lightcap was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Dugan also had an RBI.

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 2/7-8 — at South Carolina-Aiken Tournament

       SAT 2/7 — Francis Marion 2, KU 1 — Katlin Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon) started for the Golden Bears and held Francis Marion to four hits, but two first-inning runs propelled the fifth-ranked Patriots to a win. Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) went 1-for-2 for KU.

       SAT 2/7 — KU 4, Erskine 3 (9 inn.) — Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) hit a home run as KU won in the bottom of the ninth over Erskine. Denlinger scored the game-winning run, crossing home plate on a RBI single by Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart). Arbogast collected her first win of the year, pitching in relief for starter Monica Glomb (so. Mars/Mars).

SAT 2/7 — Georgia College & State Univ. 8, KU 2 — Cameron  hit a pair of solo homers, but KU fell to GC&SU 8-2. Cameron finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

       SUN 2/8 — KU 8, Georgia College & State Univ. 0 (5 inn.) Arbogast pitched five innings of two-hit, shutout ball to lead KU past No. 20 Georgia College & State University. Arbogast struck out six and walked just two. Fitzgerald and Morrison hit home runs for KU. Fitzgerald finished 2-for-2 with a single, a homer and a walk. Maria Schiavo (jr. Old Forge/Old Forge) was 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI.

       SUN 2/8 — KU 2, Limestone 1 — Arbogast pitched sixing innings of two-hit ball, allowing just one run, and a walk-off homer Alex Najpauer (so. Topton/Brandywine Heights) helped KU leave Aiken, S.C., with a winning record. Najpauer hit the walk-off blast in the bottom of the seventh. Mary Hoch (so. Philadelphia/St. Hubert) pitched in the top of the seventh to collect the win.
