WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (20-3, 9-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 2/11 — KU 84, Mansfield 79 — Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 24 points and Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson) had 22 to lead KU to a PSAC East win at Mansfield. Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central) added 13 points and Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon) scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

       SAT 2/14 — KU 77, Millersville 61 — KU made it nine straight wins with a PSAC East victory over Millersville. Woodlin scored 22 points and Ben added 20 to lead the Golden Bears, who won their 20th game of the season, one short of KU’s single-season record for wins. Dennis notched 14 points and Mark Bower (sr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) added 13 to round out KU’s scoring leaders. The win was the 57th PSAC Eastern Division victory for head coach Bernie Driscoll, moving past Walt Risley into first place on KU’s career division wins chart.

Women’s Basketball (16-7, 6-4 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 2/11 — Mansfield 59, KU 56 — KU dropped a PSAC East contest at Mansfield. Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) led KU with 18 points and Melissa McQuade (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) scored 11 points and had eight rebounds. Chauntelle Schroeder (jr. Toronto, Ontario/Mother Teresa Catholic) scored 10 points and grabbed 11 boards.

       SAT 2/14 — Millersville 73, KU 69 Wisemiller scored 23 points, but KU lost to Millersville in a PSAC East game. Wisemiller hit 8-of-14 field goals, including six 3-pointers.  She added eight rebounds. McQuade scored 17 points and grabbed six boards. Schroeder had 12 points.

Bowling (66-32, 5-1 NEC)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 2/14-2/15 — 5th at Morgan State Collegiate Classic (at Perry Hall, Md.) — KU finished fifth at the Morgan State Collegiate Classic, going 5-5 over the two-day event. In traditional matches Saturday, KU went 3-2. Stephanie Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) averaged 189.4 over five matches to lead KU. Jacquelyn Heimbach (sr. Easton/Easton) averaged 180.6 pins. The No. 8 ranked Golden Bears defeated Bowie State (963-753), No. 18 Fayetteville State (815-724) and Saint Peter’s (815-723).  KU lost to No. 9 Central Missouri State (919-813) and No. 1 Vanderbilt (926-898). In baker matches Sunday, KU was 2-3. KU lost 705-704 to Fairleigh Dickinson. KU also lost 696-693 to New Jersey City and 748-708 to Sacred Heart. The Golden Bears collected wins over Lincoln (693-439) and North Carolina Central (672-557).

Indoor Track and Field

Last Week’s Action

       FRI 2/13 — KU women at Valentine Invitational (at Boston University) — Several members of the KU women’s team participated in the Valentine Invitational at Boston University. The event featured mostly Division I teams and athletes. Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) finished 28th in the mile with a time o 5:08.26. Hailey Dell (sr. Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) ran a time of 10:45.43 in the 3,000 meters, while Kristy Ulrich (fr. Duncannon/Susquenita) clocked a time of 11:07.51. In the 5,000, Kristin Cupido (so. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished 23rd with a time of 18:01.76. Steph Grimm (fr. Fleetwood/Oley Valley) was 40th in the event, with a time of 18:33.88.

       SAT 2/14 — KU women at Bucknell Winter Classic — Cristina Reimer (so. Chester Springs/Downingtown East) highlighted the KU women’s performance at the Bucknell Winter Classic with a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run. Reimer finished in 18:28.40. Other highlights on the track included Horstmann in the 800 (3rd, 2:20.00), Katie Quinn (jr. Glenolden/Interboro) in the 200 (7th, 26.85), Doofan Tor-Agbidye (sr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) in the 400 (8th, 1:02.31), and in the mile, Ulrich (6th, 5:22.34) and Dell (7th, 5:27.22). Melissa Fellenbaum (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) placed second in the pole vault (10-11 3/4), with Rachel Weigle (jr. Red Lion/Red Lion) finishing fourth (10-6) and Kelly Strickland (jr. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) tying for fifth (10-0). Christina Costanzo (fr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) was eighth in the long jump (16-7 1/4) and Ashley Pinter (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) finished fourth in the 20-pound weight throw (49-5).

       SAT 2/14 — KU women at Bucknell Winter Classic Cody Hartzler (sr. Belleville/Indian Valley) had the top performance for the KU men’s team at the Bucknell Winter Classic, finishing second in the high jump (6-6 1/4). T.J. Longmore (jr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) was third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.45). Other track highlights were Kendel Dixon (jr. Atglen/Octorara) in the 400 (50.08), Shaun Crump (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) in the 800 (7th, 1:59.93) and Ryan Reich (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) in the mile (4:29.50). In the field, Craig Sherwood (fr. Perkasie/Pennridge) tied for second in the pole vault (14-3 1/4) and William Hodges (jr. Levittown/Neshaminy) tied for seventh (13-9 1/4). Chris Boutsikaris (sr. Newton/Newton) was fourth in the 35-pound weight (54-6 1/2).

Wrestling (9-7-1)

Last Week’s Events

       SAT 2/14 — KU 30, York 13 — The KU wrestling team used three pins to defeat York College. Brett Martinez (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh), Sonny Flood (sr. Southampton/William Tennent) and Robert Knopf (fr. Stroudsburg/Pocono Mountain East) all collected pins as KU won six of the 10 bouts. Martinez, at 149 pounds, used a pin to give KU an 11-8 lead, and Flood made it 21-11 with his pin at 174 pounds. Knopf sealed the match at heavyweight with a pin in 6:39. John Paukovits (so. Northampton/Northampton) recorded a technical fall in his 141-pound bout, winning 16-0. David Zeek (jr. Newtown/Council Rock North), at 165 pounds, picked up a major decision, and Scott Snyder (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) had a 3-2 decision at 197.
