Men’s Basketball (22-3, 11-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 2/18 — KU 77, WEST CHESTER 67 — Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson) scored a game-high 26 points as KU clinched a home playoff game with win over West Chester University at Keystone Hall. Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon) and Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) each had 18 points, and Washington recorded nine rebounds and six blocks. Dennis also had five of KU's 15 blocks. Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

       SAT 2/21 — KU 103, SHIPPENSBURG 75 — Woodlin scored 27 points to lead KU to a school record 22nd win, defeating Shippensburg University at Keystone Hall. KU secured at least a share of the PSAC East title by winning its school record 11th divisional game. KU also extended its record winning streak to 11 games. Dennis had 23 points and Ben had 20. Ben also had eight rebounds and Dennis tied his career-high with nine assists. Mark Bower (sr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) finished with a career-high 15 points and three 3-pointers. Washington recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Women’s Basketball (18-7, 8-4 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 2/18 — KU 63, WEST CHESTER 60 Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) scored 19 points, including five first-half 3-pointers, to lift KU over West Chester at Keystone Hall. KU hit nine 3-pointers in the first half. Wisemiller's five 3s gave her the new KU single-season record. Chauntelle Schroeder (jr. Toronto, Ont./Mother Theresa) hit a mid-range jumper with 55 seconds left for a 60-58 lead. She finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Vivian Melvin (jr. Chichester/Chichester) scored nine points. Melissa McQuade (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) also had nine rebounds to go with her eight points.

       SAT 2/21 — KU 74, SHIPPENSBURG 68 — McQuade scored 19 points to help KU clinch a playoff berth with a win over Shippensburg University at Keystone Hall. Wisemiller had 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Schroeder scored 13 points and had seven rebounds. Lara Dellegrotti (sr. Berwick/Berwick), who was honored before the game on Senior Day, scored nine points and had a 3-pointer. Meredith Starr (so. Richmond, Va./Monacan) finished with a game-high seven assists. McQuade and Schroeder each had four steals.

Bowling (72-32, 11-1 NEC)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 2/21-2/22 — 6-0 at Northeast Conference Meet (at St. Francis, N.Y.) — KU had a perfect weekend at the Northeast Conference Meet No. 2, winning all six matches at St. Francis. The Golden Bears (72-32) are now 11-1 in the NEC and atop the standings. KU opened the meet with a 1,730-1,629 win over second-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson. The No. 8 Golden Bears were led by a 209 from Jacquelyn Heimbach (sr. Easton/Easton) and a 202 from Kayla Stamm (so. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin).  KU outscored FDU 940-932 in the traditional match, then rolled a 790-697 win in the four-game baker match. KU then defeated Saint Peter's 1,581-1,452. In the final match of the day, KU rolled a 1,620-1,240 win over Long Island. KU's highest individual game of the day was rolled by Courtney Woytko (fr. West Lawn/Wilson) vs. LIU. The freshman carded a 212, a personal best at KU. KU opened Sunday with a win over Adelphi, 1,630-1,596. The Golden Bears were led by Heimbach's 209. The Golden Bears also picked up wins against St. Francis, 1,668-1,512, and Sacred Heart, 1,753-1,528. In their traditional match against Sacred Heart, Steph Ray (jr. West Lawn/Wilson) rolled KU's highest game of the day, 232. Heimbach led the Golden Bears on the weekend, knocking down 1,172 pins in six games for a 195.3 average. Stamm averaged a 193.0 over six games and Ray averaged 190.2 in five games.

Men’s Swimming (7-3, 2-3 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       THU 2/19-SUN 2/22 — 8th/8 at PSAC Championships — KU finished eighth with 177 points at the 2009 PSAC Championships at Cumberland Valley High School. West Chester won the team title with 812 points. Shippensburg was second with 544.5 and Clarion was third with 504. Gannon (362) and Bloomsburg (342.5) rounded out the top five. Joe Lahovski (fr. Allentown/Emmaus) led the Golden Bears with two top-10 and a 15th-place finish. Lahovski was ninth in the 1,650 freestyle (16:37.71) and 10th in the 1,000 freestyle (9:48.87). He added a 15th-place finish in the 500 free (4:50.05). Scott Thomas (sr. Schuylkill Haven/Blue Mountain) picked up the Golden Bears’ best finish, sixth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:56.44. Thomas also placed 15th in the 400 IM, followed by A.J. Guarino (so. Royersford/Downingtown), who was 16th (4:22.48). John Pandish (sr. Milford/Delaware Valley) picked up a seventh-place finish in the 400 IM (4:15.61). He also finished 16th in the 200 IM (2:00.56). In the 200 breaststroke, Jeff Travor (so. Quakertown/Quakertown Community) was 13th (2:15.04) and Nelson Martinez (sr. Allentown/Dieruff) was 15th (2:16.03). David Shedleski (fr. Mechanicsburg/Trinity) placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.65), while Travor was 16th (1:01.90). Derek Orr (sr. Easton/Easton) also placed 15th in the 200 freestyle (1:46.74). In the 100 backstroke, Matt Moates (fr. South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) finished 13th (55.26) and Recio was 15th (57.18). The 400 freestyle relay team of Orr, Travor, Pandish and Stephen Krater (jr. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area) finished eighth (3:13.58). The 800 freestyle relay team was seventh, with Lahovski, Pandish, Krater and Orr swimming it in 7:10.61. Moates, Shedleski, Gabriel Recio (so. Lancaster/Hempfield) and Orr led the men’s 200 medley relay team to an eighth-place finish (1:38.96). The team of Krater, Orr, Recio and John Nicklous (sr. Philadelphia/Father Judge) finished in eighth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:28.32. KU's 400 medley relay team was also eighth in 3:39.72. That team consisted of Thomas, Travor, Pandish and Krater.

 

Women’s Swimming (11-3, 7-3 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

       THU 2/19-SUN 2/22 — 7th/14 at PSAC Championships — Stephanie Jeppesen (jr. Bethlehem/Liberty) set three individual school records, leading KU to a seventh-place finish at the 2009 PSAC Championships at Cumberland Valley High School. KU scored a total of 267.5 points in the four-day event. West Chester won the women’s team title with 660.5 points, followed by Clarion, which had 560 points. California, Pa., had 495 points, Gannon 352.5 and Indiana, Pa., 287.5 to round out the top five. Jeppesen set school records with NCAA A-Cut times in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. In the 100 breaststroke, she broke a school record (1:04.30), while placing third in the finals. Her time broke the record she set earlier in the prelims (1:05.44). Jeppesen's record-breaking performance in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.51. Jeppesen finished second in the race, breaking the school record set by Claudine Gruver in 1997. She finished second in the 200 breaststroke in a record time of 2:17.19. Jeppesen also was a member of the school record-breaking 800 freestyle relay team, swimming with Nicole Hinsdale (fr. Glen Mills/Bayard Rustin), Kerry Choplin (so. Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford) and Heather Wolkom (jr. Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven). The four KU swimmers finished fifth in the time of 7:52.94. Wolkom set a school record in the 1,000 free, placing fifth with a KU record-setting time of 10:31.88. The time was also an NCAA-B qualifying mark. She broke the previous record of 10:42.18 by Ashley Singer in 2007. Wolkom also set a school record in the 1,650 freestyle, placing sixth with an NCAA B-Cut time of 17:53.17. Alex Crigler (so. West Lawn/Wilson High School) finished in ninth (17:56.60) behind Wolkom and Choplin was 13th (18:03.26), both recording NCAA B-Cut times. In the 500 free, Wolkom placed sixth with a time of 5:10.61, which was an NCAA-B cut time. Crigler was 14th in the event (5:16.20). Crigler also placed 11th in 10:42.79, also an NCAA B-Cut time. Choplin was 15th in 10:50.41. Laura Heebner (sr. Easton/Easton) was 12th in the 400 IM, swimming it in 4:45.00, a new KU school record. Choplin followed with a 16th-place finish (4:50.34). In the 200 butterfly, Heebner placed 14th (2:17.85). Hinsdale placed 10th in the 200 backstroke (2:09.93) and Jordan Shapiro (fr. Trenton N.J./Princeton) was 12th (2:11.35). Shapiro also took 12th in the 100 backstroke (59.86). Katie Kelly (so. Downingtown/Downingtown) was 15th in the 100 butterfly (1:02.80). The women's 400 medley relay team of Shapiro, Heebner, Allison Sheely (so. Enola/Trinity) and Jeppesen placed sixth with a time of 4:00.24. The 400 freestyle relay team of Jeppesen, Hinsdale, Sheely and Shapiro placed eighth with a time of 3:37.09. The women’s 200 medley relay team, comprised of Sheely, Jeppesen, Hinsdale and Shapiro, finished fifth in a time of 1:49.06.

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 2/21 — KU women at Susquehanna Open — Ashley Pinter (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) led KU with two of the Golden Bears’ four first-place finishes at the 2009 Susquehanna Open. Pinter finished first in the weight throw (51-5 1/4) and in the shot put (43-3 1/4). Kelly Strickland (jr. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) also took first, winning the pole vault (10-11 3/4), and Katie Quinn (jr. Glenolden/Interboro) won the 55-meter dash (7.54). Melissa Fellenbaum (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) recorded a third-place finish behind Strickland with a vault of 10-0. Alison Wise (jr. Fivepointville/Garden Spot) was sixth (9-6 1/2). Samirah Barczynski (jr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) (7.63) finished third behind Quinn in the 55 dash, and Brooke Mathews (fr. Reedsville/Indian Valley) was fifth (7.70). Quinn also finished second in the 200 (26.84), with Mathews placing fourth (27.29) and Sarah Messner (so. Maple Glen/Upper Dublin) (27.63). Christina Costanzo (fr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) finished second in two events, the triple jump (34-7 3/4) and the long jump (16-5 3/4). Alex Butler (sr. Montoursville/Montoursville) tied for seventh in the long jump (15-9 1/2). Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) and Kristy Ulrich (fr. Duncannon/Susquenita) also nabbed second-place finishes for KU, with Horstmann running a 2:17.86 in the 800 and Ulrich finishing in 10:44.97 in the 3,000. Katie Colburn (so. Hanover/South Western) was second in the 55 hurdles (9.15) and Alyson Serafin (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) was fourth (9.45). In the 400, Doofan Tor-Agbidye (sr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) was fourth (1:02.48) and Jessica Schlecter (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks South) was eighth (1:03.19). KU also collected a second-place finish in the 1,600 relay and third in the distance medley relay.

       SAT 2/21 — KU men at Susquehanna Open — Christian Boutsikaris (sr. Newton/Newton) recorded a first-place finish in the weight throw to lead KU at the 2009 Susquehanna Open. KU also had a first-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay. Boutsikaris took first with a throw of 55-0 1/2, followed by Jason Rebuck (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) in fourth (51-9) and Sam Wall (so. Newville/Big Spring) (49-2 1/2). Wall also was fifth in the shot put (47-6 1/2). Kendel Dixon (jr. Atglen/Octorara) finished second in the 400 (50.37) and Shaun Crump (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was sixth (52.56). T.J. Longmore (jr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) also posted a second-place finish, running the 55 hurdles in 7.84 seconds. Shane Harvey (so. Pattenburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) was right behind Longmore, finishing third (7.85). Cody Hartzler (sr. Belleville/Indian Valley) had a third-place finish in the high jump (6-2 3/4), and William Hodges (jr. Levittown/Neshaminy) was third in the pole vault (14-5 1/4), ahead of teammate Justin Germani (so. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone), who was seventh (13-5 1/4). Matt Reightler (so. Bethlehem/Northampton) rounded out the KU top eight individual marks with a fifth-place finish in the 800 (2:00.06).

Wrestling (10-7-1)

Last Week’s Events

       TUE 2/17 — KU 27, Shippensburg 13 — A pin, three decisions and two wins by forfeit helped KU defeat Shippensburg. The win gives KU 10 victories on the season, the fourth time in the last five seasons that the Golden Bears have recorded 10 or more wins under coach Robert Fisher. He has recorded a winning record all nine seasons at KU, the longest stretch of any KU wrestling coach. He also has 91 coaching wins, second in program history behind Dan Hinkel, who has 124. John Paukovits (so. Northampton/Northampton) recorded a pin in 4:09 at 141 pounds, and Chris Chambers (sr. Holland/Council Rock South), at 157, and David Zeek (jr. Newtown/Council Rock North), at 165, recorded back-to-back decisions. Scott Snyder (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh), at 197, sealed the win with a decision.

       THU 2/19-SUN 2/22 — at Builder Invitational

       THU 2/19 — KU 12, Lock Haven 0 — Darin Gorski (jr. Mount Joy/Donegal) pitched six scoreless innings and four players drove in two runs each to lead KU past Lock Haven in the first day of the Builder Invitational at the Apprentice School in Hampton, Va. Gorski struck out nine and walked two, allowing one hit for his first win of the year. Jordan Smith (so. New Milford/Blue Ridge) struck out three over two scoreless innings and Jason Herr (so. Harrisburg/C.D. East) pitched the ninth. Matt Kulbacki (jr. Hershey/Hershey) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jared Frey (so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Corey Buletza (so. St. Claire/Pottsville) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Michael Dugan (so. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and Shayne Houck (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) knocked in two runs apiece.

       FRI 2/20 — KU 16, Apprentice School 6 — KU topped Apprentice School at the Builder Invitational, winning in eight innings as the 10-run rule came into effect. James Quigley (so. Bensalem/Bensalem) and Buletza each belted two-run homers, and Mark Renda (so. Lansdale/North Penn) added a three-run shot. The trio each recorded three hits, while Buletza added two stolen bases. Matt Patterson (fr. Cedar Crest/Lebanon) left the game with a 9-6 lead, but did not last long enough to get the win. Anthony Fegely (so. Exeter/Exeter) finished last 3 2/3 innings allowing only two hits and recording three strikeouts to pick up the win. Dominick Fantanarosa (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) collected three hits, three RBIs and scored two runs. Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) had two RBIs for the Golden Bears.

       SAT 2/21 — KU 15, East Stroudsburg 8 — KU scored nine runs over the final four innings to hold off East Stroudsburg in a non-conference win at the Builder Invitational. Kacelowicz led the Golden Bears going 4-for-5, scoring four runs and driving in two more. Frey and Houck each had three hits, with Frey recording three RBIs and a run scored and Houck scoring once and driving in another run. Quigley also had three RBIs, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) highlighted the top of the batting order, as well, going 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored and two RBIs. Trent Mertz (so. Kutztown/Kutztown) started for KU, going 4 1/3 innings while striking out five. Mertz left the game with a 6-3 lead, and Adam Maini (jr. Macungie/Emmaus), who picked up the win in relief, pitched three innings, striking out three and allowing five runs — four earned — on two hits and four walks. Mike Bucklin (jr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) closed out the game, pitching 1 2/3 innings, allowing just one baserunner on a hit for his first save of the year.

       SAT 2/21 — KU 13, Bloomsburg 11 — Houck and Quigley led KU in a comeback win over Bloomsburg University. Kevin Morganti (jr. Reading/Muhlenberg) started on the mound for KU giving up 11 runs over the first four innings, but settled down and pitched shutout ball in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to collect the win. Jason Herr (so. Harrisburg/C.D. East) pitched a scoreless ninth to collect the save. Houck finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Quigley was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Buletza was 3-for-6, including a double in the eighth to give KU a 13-11 lead. Lightcap scored three runs, while Kacelowicz and Frey each scored twice. Frey was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Kacelowicz was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Fantanarosa, who scored twice, recorded the game-tying RBI single in the eighth.

       SUN 2/22 — KU 12, Bloomsburg 4 — Frey and Houck led KU to a 12-4 win over Bloomsburg University in the Builder Invitational championship game. Frey finished with three RBIs and Houck was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Both hit two-RBI doubles in the seventh to push KU’s lead to 12-4. Jeff Kistle (so. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny) also had a sacrifice and scored a run. Ryan Cassidy (jr. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) pitched five innings for KU collecting the win and Bucklin picked up his second save pitching four shutout innings.
