WINTER SPORTS

Men’s Basketball (24-3, 13-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

       WED 2/25 — KU 82, CHEYNEY 76 — Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson) scored 25 points, including 11 free throws, to lead KU past Cheyney in a PSAC East contest. No. 24-ranked KU finishes the regular season undefeated at home, 14-0. The win also marked KU head coach Bernie Driscoll's 137th win, a school record, passing Walt Risley (1945-63). Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central) was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon) added 19 points, including the go-ahead putback that gave KU a 77-76 lead with 59 seconds left. Ryan White (fr. Philadelphia/Franklin Learning Ctr.) finished with six points and seven boards, all on the offensive end. Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) finished with 13 points, including a clutch 3-pointer in the second half.

SAT 2/28 — KU 105, Bloomsburg 74 — Woodlin and Dennis each scored 25 points in a PSAC East win over Bloomsburg. Woodlin also pulled down nine rebounds and have five assists. Washington scored 17 points and had eight rebounds. Ben had 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Julius Gray (so. Lincoln/Oxford) hit three 3-pointers. The Golden Bears made 12-of-23 3-point attempts in the game. Woodlin led the way with five, while Dennis hit three and Ben hit one.

Last Week’s Events

       WED 2/25 — KU 82, CHEYNEY 65 — Melissa McQuade (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler) matched a career high with 30 points and grabbed 19 boards to set KU's single-season rebound record in a win over Cheyney. McQuade was 12-of-20 from the field, 4-of-6 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the line to match her career high of 30 points, set vs. Pitt-Johnstown early this season. Her 19 boards, also a career high, give her 259 for the season. She eclipsed the previous record of 251 by Missy Boettger in 1989-90. Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton) scored 14 points and Meredith Starr (so. Richmond, Va./Monacan) had 11.

       SAT 2/28 — KU 60, Bloomsburg 46 — Wisemiller hit five 3-pointers in KU's win over Bloomsburg. The 20th win is the most wins by KU since the 1999-2000 season, when Golden Bears head coach Janet Malouf led the team to a 21-6 record. The 10th PSAC East win also is a school record and the most since the 1999-2000 season. McQuade and Chauntelle Schroeder (jr. Toronto, Ontario/Mother Teresa Catholic) each scored 13 points. McQuade recorded a double-double, pulling down 11 rebounds. Schroeder had eight rebounds.

Last Week’s Action

       SAT-SUN 2/28-3/1 — 10th/16 at Alabama A&M Holiday Collegiate Classic — The Kutztown University women's bowling team finished 10th at the sixth annual Holiday Collegiate Classic at Alabama A&M. Kayla Jones (fr. Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) led the Golden Bears Saturday, averaging a 214.1 over six games. She knocked down 1,285 pins for KU Saturday, with a high game of 234. She finished with an average of 191.1 over 12 games. The Golden Bears opened the event with an 807-795 win over Grand Canyon State. KU also defeated Bethune-Cookman 1,038-890 and Jackson State 959-816. KU lost a few close matches, including a one-pin loss to Arkansas State, 899-898. The Golden Bears also fell 892-867 to No. 15 Wisconsin-Whitewater and 882-839 to Central Missouri. On Sunday, KU went 3-3, as well, defeating Alabama State (835-823), No. 12 Minnesota State-Mankato (933-861) and Florida A&M (858-852).

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 2/8-3/1 — KU women 5th/13 PSAC Championship (at ESU) — Kelly Strickland (jr. Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) and Ashley Pinter (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) won individual PSAC titles to lead the KU women's team at the PSAC Indoor Championships. KU finished in fifth place with 62 points. Slippery Rock was first with 146 points, edging out Shippensburg (142). Lock Haven (101) was third, followed by Indiana (Pa.) with 84. Strickland took first in the pole with a mark of 10-11 3/4. Pinter won the shot put with a throw of 42-11. She also claimed fourth place in the weight throw with a mark of 52-0 1/2. Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) set a school record in the mile, finishing fourth (5:03.42), an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Horstmann also finished in eighth in the 800 (2:22.02). Cheryl Dingman (jr. Lansdale/North Penn) set the new KU record in the 3,000 (10:12.21), placing fifth. Rachel Weigle (jr. Red Lion/Red Lion) and Melissa Fellenbaum (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) placed in the pole vault, with Weigle taking fifth (10-6) and Fellenbaum sixth (10-6). Katie Colburn (so. Hanover/South Western) and Cristina Reimer (so. Chester Springs/Downingtown East) were sixth in their respective events, with Colburn scoring 2,917 points in the pentathlon and Reimer finishing the 5,000 in 17:59.00. Christina Costanzo (fr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) was seventh in the long jump (17-3 1/4). The 3,200 relay, ran by Jessica Schlecter (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks South), Jill Kostishion (fr. Hilltown/Pennridge), Horstmann and Keri Brown (so. Southampton, N.J./Seneca), finished fourth (9:39.28). In the distance medley relay, Lynn Lisofsky (so. Wilkes-Barre/James M. Coughlin), Kristy Ulrich (fr. Duncannon/Susquenita), Dingman and Brown, finished fifth (12:33.48). The team of Doofan Tor-Agbidye (sr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg), Horstmann, Colburn and Schlechter placed in sixth in the 1,600 relay (4:06.15).

       SAT 2/8-3/1 — KU men 6th/12 PSAC Championship (at ESU) — Cody Hartzler (sr. Belleville/Indian Valley) led KU with an All-PSAC performance in the high jump, finishing second with a height of 6-6. The men's team finished the PSAC championships in sixth place with 43 points. Shippensburg was first with 134 points, followed by Lock Haven (129) and East Stroudsburg (120). Rounding out the top five were Slippery Rock (91) and Indiana (Pa.) with 80. Kendel Dixon (jr. Atglen/Octorara) placed fourth in the 400 (49.47) and sixth in the 200 (22.74). In the 55 hurdles, T.J. Longmore (jr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) took fourth (7.80). Joseph Tavormina (fr. Hellertown/Saucon Valley), Shane Harvey (so. Pattenburg, N.J./North Hunterdon), Dixon and Shaun Crump (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) placed seventh in the 1,600 relay (3:26.11). Crump had an eighth-place finish in the 800 (1:59.60). Chris Boutsikaris (sr. Newton/Newton) placed fourth in the weight throw (53-7 3/4). Craig Sherwood (fr. Perkasie/Pennridge) and William Hodges (jr. Levittown/Neshaminy) were back to back in the pole vault, with Sherwood placing sixth and Hodges seventh, both with a mark of 14-7 1/4. Ryan Reich (fr. Oley/Oley Valley), Ben Loht (jr. Leistown/Indian Valley), Matt Reightler (so. Bethlehem/Northampton) and Crump led the 3,200-meter relay team to a fourth-place finish (8:03.03). Loht also ran with Jeffrey Collier (fr. Philadelphia/Lankenau), Jubilant Kunce (fr. Red Lion/Red Lion) and Frank Nick (fr. Kintnersville/Palisades) in the distance medley relay, placing eighth (11:07.77).

 

Wrestling (10-7-1)

Last Week’s Events

        SAT-SUN 2/27-2/28 — 6th/15 at NCAA East Regionals at Mercyhurst —  Joe Kemmerer (sr. Mountain Top/Crestwood) and  Scott Snyder (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) each finished as the runner-up in their respective weight classes at the NCAA Division II Super Region I tournament at Mercyhurst College. Both wrestlers will represent KU at the NCAA Division II Championships March 12-14 in Houston, Texas. KU finished the tournament in sixth place with 53 points. Newberry College won the team title with 135.5 points and Pitt-Johnstown was second with 108.5 points. West Liberty State (92), Gannon (80.5) and Mercyhurst (71) rounded out the top five. No. 1-seeded Kemmerer, at 133 pounds, Snyder, the No. 3 seed at 197 pounds, each went 3-1 at the tournament. Kemmerer had two decisions and a pin, while Snyder recorded three straight decisions. David Zeek (jr. Newtown/Council Rock North), as the No. 5 seed, and Chris Chambers (sr. Holland/Council Rock South), who had a bye in the first round of the 157-pound bracket, each wrestled into the semifinals, but fell into the consolation bracket from there. Brett Martinez (jr. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) and Sonny Flood (sr. Southampton/William Tennent) wrestled their way into the wrestleback quarterfinals, but both wrestlers lost in the semifinals.

       THU 2/28-SUN 3/7 — at Savannah (Ga.) Invitational

       SAT 2/28 — KU 8, Findlay 3 — Darin Gorski (jr. Mount Joy/Donegal) recorded 13 strikeouts to lead the KU over the University of Findlay in the first game of the Savannah Invitational. Gorski (2-0) limited Findlay to two runs over six innings for the win, and Kevin Morganti (jr. Reading/Muhlenberg) allowed just one run on two hits over the final three innings to record the save. Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and a triple. Corey Buletza (so. St. Clair/Pottsville) finished 3-for-5 with and RBI and a run scored. Shayne Houck (fr. Barto/Boyertown) hit two solo home runs. Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

       SAT 2/28-THU 3/5 — Rebel Spring Games at Kissimmee, Fla. SAT 2/28 — New York Tech 5, Kutztown 2 — KU dropped its opening game of the Rebel Spring Games to New York Institute of Technology. Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) hit a home run. Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert) pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing no hits and recording a strikeout. Kim Morrison (sr. Newmartket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) went 2-for-3.

       SAT 2/28 — Lewis 1, KU 0 — KU was held to one hit in a shutout loss to Lewis University. Maria Schiavo (jr. Old Forge/Old Forge) hit a single, and Monica Glomb (so. Mars/Mars) pitched the entire game, allowing only two hits, while striking out four.

       SUN 3/1 — KU 4, Sciences in Philadelphia 3 — Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) hit a two-out double to lead KU past the University of Sciences. Katlin Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon) pitched the first four innings, allowing only one run and striking out five. Hoch picked up the win in relief, striking out two batters in her inning of work, and Glomb pitched the final two innings for the save, allowing one hit and no runs. Denlinger was 3-for-3 with two doubles.

       SUN 3/1 — KU 14, Lake Erie 0 — Glomb pitched a no-hitter in KU's rout of Lake Erie in six innings. Glomb's pitching gem included 11 strikeouts and one walk over six innings. Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) hit a pair of triples, and Fitzgerald had a double.

       SUN 3/1 — Savannah Art & Design 7, KU 2 — KU dropped its opening match of the spring season to Savannah College of Art & Design. Jonathan Goulet (jr. Quebec, CANADA) and Arijit Goswami (fr. Kolkata, INDIA) picked up the only wins for KU. Goulet won 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the fourth singles, while Goswami won in straight sets 6-3, 4-0 in the sixth spot.
