Men’s Basketball (28-5, 13-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Events

      Tue 3/17 — Gannon 84, KU 73 (NCAA Regionals) — Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 19 points as KU had its 2008-09 season come to a close with a loss at Gannon in the Atlantic Regional final. Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon), who was named to the region's all-tournament team, finished with 16 points. Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson), who also was named to the all-tournament team, had 16 points. Ben finished his career at KU as the all-time leading scorer with 2,017 points.

 

Bowling (98-54, 15-3 NEC)

Last Week’s Action

      FRI 3/20 — 4-2 at Northeast Conference Meet — KU finished the 2008-09 regular season in first place of the Northeast Conference, after going 4-2 on Friday at Farleigh Dickinson. KU opened the day with a 957-901 loss to Sacred Heart in traditional game play. The Golden Bears were led by Kayla Stamm (so. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) with a 211. The Golden Bears bounced back with a 909-836 win over Adelphi. Kayla Jones (fr. Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) rolled a team-high 217 and Stephanie Ray (so. West Lawn/Wilson) had a 200 in the win.

      SAT-SUN 3/21-22 — KU 2nd/7 at Northeast Conference Championships — KU finished as the runner-up at the Northeast Conference Championship after falling 4-0 to Fairleigh Dickinson in the championship. KU opened the tournament Saturday with a 4-2 win over Saint Peter's. The Golden Bears then lost 4-0 to Adelphi before bouncing back with a 4-0 win over St. Francis.

 

SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (21-5, 8-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

      THU 3/19 — KU 10, WILMINGTON (Del.) 9 — Matt Kulbacki (jr. Hershey/Hershey) doubled in the tying run and scored game-winner to beat Wilmington (Del.). Kulbacki finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Jeff Kistle (so. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Kistle's sacrifice fly in the eighth was the game-winning RBI. Shayne Houck (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown finished 3-for-3, sparked a rally with one of his three infield singles. Michael Dugan (so. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was 2-for-4, with a solo home run to lead off the seventh. Jason Herr (so. Harrisburg/C.D. East) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to earn the win.

      FRI 3/20 — KU 7, Mansfield 2 — Darin Gorski (jr. Mount Joy/Donegal) pitched six innings of four-hit ball in the Golden Bears defeat of Mansfield. Gorski gave up an unearned run, striking out seven and walking only one to earn his fifth win of the season. Kistle and Houck each finished 2-for-3, and Corey Buletza (so. St. Claire/Pottsville) was 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Lightcap was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a triple.

      FRI 3/20 — KU 4, Mansfield 0 — Adam Maini (jr. Macungie/Emmaus) pitched a complete-game shut out, scattering four hits and striking out four to improve to 4-0 on the season. Dugan was 2-for-3. Jared Frey (so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) was 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Dom Fantanarosa (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

      SAT 3/21 — KU 6, MANSFIELD 1 — Ryan Cassidy (jr. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) and Kevin Morganti (jr. Reading/Muhlenberg) combined to pitch a one-hitter in the Golden Bears win over Mansfield. Cassidy pitched six innings to earn his fourth victory of the season. He struck out seven, while allowing just one unearned run on one hit and two walks. Morganti pitched a perfect seventh to close out the game. Buletza led the offense, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Houck was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Buletza also had a triple.

      SAT 3/21— KU 2, MANSFIELD 1 — Two runs in the second was all the Golden Bears needed to complete their sweep of Mansfield. Buletza hit a two-RBI single in the second inning, plating Mark Renda (so. Lansdale/North Penn) and Kulbacki. Trent Mertz (so. Kutztown/Kutztown) started on the mound for KU, going six innings, allowing just one run on five hits and one walk. He struck out two. Mike Bucklin (jr. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) shut the door in the seventh to pick up his fifth save of the season. He struck out two in the inning, while facing four batters. Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) finished 4-for-4 Lightcap was 2-for-3.

Women’s Lacrosse (1-4, 0-2 PSAC East)

Upcoming Events

      THU 3/16 — KU 14, SETON HILL 5 — The Kutztown University women’s lacrosse team notched its first win of the 2009 season, topping Seton Hill. Rachel Mehaffey (fr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) was one of three Golden Bears to net a hat trick in the non-conference matchup, scoring five goals and tallying two assists. Carrie Healey (jr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) scored four goals for KU and Leeann Pica (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy) had three. Julie Rosenkaimer (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) added two goals. Goalkeeper Erin Myers (fr. Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) earned her first career win at KU, stopping nine Seton Hill shots.

      WED 3/18 — Shippensburg 11, KU 9 — KU dropped a match with Shippensburg. Healey finished with two goals and three assists. Two of her assists and one of her goals came during KU's 5-0 run. Mehaffey and Rosenkaimer each had hat tricks for KU, and Mehaffey had an assist. Amanda Steczak (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) also scored a goal. Golden Bears goalkeeper Myers recorded 17 saves in the game.

      SAT 3/21 — SLIPPERY ROCK 14, KU 9 — Pica and Healey each netted hat tricks in a loss to Slippery Rock. Steczak finished with two goals. Mehaffey also had a goal for the Golden Bears.

Last Week’s Action

      TUE 3/17 — KU 4, GEORGIAN COURT 3 — Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the Golden Bears win over Georgian Court. Denlinger finished the game 2-for-4. Kim Morrison (sr. Newmartket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) was 2-for-4 and Michelle McGinty (fr. Warminster/Archbishop Wood) was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Katlin Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon) earned her 10th win of the season, limiting GCU to only three hits and striking out 12.

      FRI 3/13— KU 8, GEORGIAN COURT 1 — Maggie Reifsnyder (so. Philadlephia/Littleflower) had two RBIs and a double in a win over GCU. Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three doubles. Morrison finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Monica Glomb (so. Mars/Mars) got the win, with five innings of work and seven strikeouts. Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert) finished off the final two innings without allowing a hit and striking out one.

      WED 3/18 — KU 8, University of Sciences 0 — Denlinger finished 2-for-3, scoring three runs and recording two RBIs in a win over the University of the Sciences. Denlinger hit two-run homer in the top of the fourth to give KU the 8-0 lead, helping the Golden Bears end the game in five innings. Glomb pitched all five innings, allowing just three hits in the shutout. She struck out eight and walked none. Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO /Resurrection), Krista Tedjeske (so. Summerhill/Forest Hills) and Maria Schiavo (jr. Old Forge/Old Forge) each had two hits and a run scored for KU. Tedjeske had a homer with three RBIs. Fitzgerald, who had an RBI, and Schiavo each hit doubles, and Cameron hit an RBI triple.

      WED 3/18 — KU 9, University of Sciences 2 — Denlinger had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored to lead KU to a win over the University of the Sciences. Denlinger had a home run and two doubles. Fitzgerald was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Heather Hannum (fr. Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) finished 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a walk. Hoch pitched all seven innings for the win, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks. She struck out five.

      FRI 3/20 — KU 9, Alderson-Broaddus 6 — Cameron had two home runs in KU's win over Alderson-Broaddus. Fitzgerald had a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth. Morrison went 3-for-3 with a home run and two doubles, while Tedjeske was 3-for-4 with a double. Hoch got the win, pitching 1 1/3 innings of shut out relief. Glomb pitched a shut out seventh inning for the save.

FRI 3/20 — West Virginia State 4, KU 2 — Schiavo led the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Tedjeske was 2-for-3. Glomb allowed three runs and struck out eight.

      SAT 3/21 — KU 5, Fairmont St. 0 — Arbogast picked up the win on the mound, going seven innings for KU. She held Fairmont State to four hits and one walk. She struck out five. Denlinger, Fitzgerald and Hannum each had home runs for KU. Laura Kelley (fr. Stafford, Va./North Stafford) finished 3-for-3 with three singles for KU.

      SAT 3/21 — KU 4, Wheeling Jesuit 1 — Cameron hit a two-run double to lead the Golden Bears to a win over Wheeling Jesuit. Hoch pitched 4 2/3 innings, earning the no-decision. Glomb pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief, picking up the win for KU.

      SAT 3/21 — KU 5, Shepherd 2 — Denlinger had a two-RBI hit and Morrison hit a home run as the Kutztown University softball team defeated Shepherd. Morrison finished 2-for-3 with a single, a walk and a homer. Arbogast led KU on the mound, pitching six innings to collect her 12th win of the season. Hoch recorded the save pitching in the top of the seventh.

Men’s Tennis (2-2, 0-0 PSAC)

Last Week’s Action

      SAT 3/21 — KU 9, University of Sciences 0 — The men’s team swept all nine of its matches against the University of Sciences. Lukas Labitsch (sr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) and Santiago Baquerizo (sr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) won their doubles match, as well as winning their individual contests. Jonathan Goulet (jr. Quebec, CANADA) and Arpit Sharma (jr. Kolkata, INDIA) also won multiple matches. The two players teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles match, and Goulet won in the No. 3 singles, while Sharma won in the No. 4 singles. Arijit Goswami (fr. Kolkata, INDIA) and Rubens Vianna (sr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won at No. 3 doubles, and Goswami won No. 5 singles. Andrew Torrealba (jr. Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) picked up a win in the No. 6 singles.

Last Week’s Action

      SAT 3/21 — KU 8, University of Sciences 1 — KU was led by Rohini Das (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) and Barbara Joerns (jr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) in a win over University of Sciences. Das and Joerns won the No. 1 doubles match. Das also won at the No. 1 singles and Joerns won at the No. 2 singles. In the No. 2 doubles Sabrina Arnaud (jr. Pintendre, CANADA) and Nicole Devine (so. Allentown/Allentown Central Catholic) picked up a win. Arnaud then won in the No. 3 singles and Devine won in the No. 4 singles. Shir Suez (jr. Even-Yehuda, ISRAEL) picked up a win in the sixth singles match. Chelsea White (fr. Landenberg/Avon Grove) and Tess Wright (so. Lewisburg/Lewisburg) won the No. 3 doubles match.

      SUN 3/22 — KU 4, St. Joe’s 3 — Arnaud and Devine led KU to a win over Division I St. Joseph's University. Arnaud and Devine teamed up to win their No. 2 doubles match. Arnaud won at No. 3 singles, while Devine won at No. 4 singles. Chelsea White (fr. Landenberg/Avon Grove) and Tess Wright (so. Lewisburg/Lewisburg) won in the No. 3 doubles. Wright also won at No. 6 singles.

Outdoor Track and Field

      SAT 3/21 — Men at Lynchburg Invitational — Christian Boutsikaris (sr. Newton/Newton) led KUin its season opener. Boutsikaris took the top spot in the hammer throw with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 179-11 1/2. He also placed fifth in the javelin (178-1). Jason Rebuck (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) finished fourth in the hammer throw, (170-1). Rebuck’s top finish was in the discus, placing third (151-0). He also placed seventh in the shot put (46-6 3/4). Kendel Dixon (jr. Atglen/Octorara) placed second in the 400 (49.30), while T.J. Longmore (jr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) was third in the 110 hurdles (15.05). Shane Harvey (so. Pattenburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) was right behind him in fourth (15.68). Shaun Crump (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) placed fifth in the 800 (1:59) to round out the track events. Matt Cannell (fr. Douglassville/Daniel Boone) placed third in the long jump (21-7 1/2) and eighth in the triple jump (40-10 1/2). Robert Clews (so. Ashland/North Schuylkill) was sixth in the long jump (21-3 1/2). Percell Berry (fr. Norristown/Methacton) tied for seventh in the pole vault (13-6 1/4), while Sam Wall (so. Newville/Big Spring) was seventh in the discus (145-6). KU’s 1,600 relay team, comprised of Harvey, Dixon, Joe Tavormina (so. Hellertown/Saucon Valley) and Crump, finished second (3:25.11). Cannell, Dixon, Berry and Sam McKellar (sr. Allentown/Dieruff) placed fourth in the 400 relay (43.71).

      SAT 3/21 — Women at Lynchburg Invitational — Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) and Rachel Weigle (jr. Red Lion/Red Lion) each earned first-place finishes at the Lynchburg College Invitational. Horstmann took the top spot in the 1,500-meter run (4:50.01), while Weigle won the pole vault (10-2). Ashley Pinter (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) finished second in the shot put (39-7 1/4), the discus (132-0 1/2) and the hammer throw (150-9). Stephanie Grimm (fr. Fleetwood/Oley Valley) finished fifth in the 1,500 (4:58.80), and eighth in 800 (2:27.51). Jessica Schlecter (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks South) was fifth in the 800 (2:23.71) and Jill Kostishion (fr. Hilltown/Pennridge) was sixth (2:25.54). Kristin Cupido (so. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) earned a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 (18:20.60). Katie Quinn (jr. Glenolden/Interboro) was eighth (13.15) in the 100. In the 400 hurdles, Katie Colburn (so. Hanover/South Western) finished in sixth (1:07.39) and Lynn Lisofsky (so. Wilkes-Barre/James M. Coughlin) finished eighth (1:08.06). Melissa Fellenbaum (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) was fourth in the pole vault (9-8) and Alison Wise (jr. Fivepointville/Garden Spot) tied for seventh (8-8 1/4). Wise also placed eighth in the javelin (103-3), while Christina Costanzo (fr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) was sixth in the long jump (17-4). KU’s 1,600 relay ‘A’-team finished third (4:05.07) and the 400 relay ‘A’-team was fourth (50.08). Doofan Tor-Agbidye (sr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg), Colburn, Horstmann, Schlecter teamed up to place third in the 1,600 relay while Samirah Barczynski (jr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin), Quinn, Brooke Mathews (fr. Reedsville/Indian Valley), Tor-Agbidye took fourth in the 400 relay.
