SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (23-8, 9-3 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       SAT 4/4 — KU 13, West Chester 6 — James Quigley (so. Bensalem/Bensalem) and Chad Lightcap (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) both had a double and a home run to lead the Golden Bears over the Golden Rams. Both players went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Corey Buletza (so. St. Clair/Pottsville), Michael Dugan (so. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and Brett Wigder (so. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) each had two hits for the Golden Bears. Dugan, who hit a solo homer, scored three runs, while Wigder scored twice and Buletza once. Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and Jared Frey (jr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) also drove in two runs. Ryan Cassidy (jr. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) earned his fifth win of the season, going five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. He struck out four. Kevin Morganti (jr. Reading/Muhlenberg) pitched the final two innings, allowing just one run.

       SAT 4/4 — West Chester 8, KU 3 — Mark Renda (so. Lansdale/North Penn) and Kacelowicz each had doubles for in a loss to West Chester. Renda finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Quigley, Lightcap and Dugan all hit singles and scored a run, and Frey had an RBI.

SUN 4/5 — WEST CHESTER 6, KU 5 (8 innings) — Darin Gorski (jr. Mount Joy/Donegal) started for the Golden Bears, pitching six innings. He allowed three runs, only two earned, striking out three and scattering seven hits along the way. Shayne Houck (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Frey finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

       SUN 4/5 — WEST CHESTER 8, KU 1 — Matt Kulbacki (jr. Hershey/Hershey) had one of KU's three hits, driving in Quigley in KU’s loss to West Chester.

       WED 4/1 — West Chester 25, KU 7 — Rachel Mehaffey (fr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) led KU with five unassisted goals in a loss to West Chester. Leeann Pica (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy) scored a late goal, her 11th of the season. Ally Brehm (fr. Carlisle/Carlisle) finished out the KU scoring with an unassisted goal.

       SUN 4/5 — EAST STROUDSBURG 22, KU 11  — Carrie Healey (jr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) scored five goals and had an assist in KU's loss to East Stroudsburg. Pica had three goals for KU, including back-to-back goals at the end of the first half. Mehaffey and Julie Rosenkaimer (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) each had a goal, with Mehaffey adding an assist. Megan Schwar (Alpha, N.J./Phillipsburg) tallied one goal.

       MON 3/30 — KU 4, SHIPPENSBURG 1 — Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win against Shippensburg. Fitzgerald finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored. After allowing one run on two hits in the first, Katlin Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon) held Shippensbug to only one hit the rest of the game. Arbogast struck out five along the way to pick up her 15 win of the season. She retired the final 17 batters. Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) collected a multiple hit game, going 2-for-3.

      MON 3/30 — KU 8, MILLERSVILLE 1 — Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) hit two home runs and Heather Hannum (fr. Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) hit a walk-off blast to lead the Golden Bears to a win. Denlinger 2-for-2 with three runs scored on two homers and a walk and Hannum drove in two runs. Monica Glomb (so. Mars/Mars) pitched all five innings for KU, allowing one unearned run on three hits and one walk. She struck out two in her seventh win of the season. Maggie Reifsnyder (so. Philadelphia/Littleflower), Krista Tedjeske (so. Summerhill/Forest Hills) and Sara Golden (fr. Souderton/Souderton) each had RBIs, while Maria Schiavo (jr. Old Forge/Old Forge), Cameron and Tedjeske scored runs for KU. Fitzgerald  scored two runs on a hit and a walk.

       TUE 3/31 — KU 3, West Chester 1 — Denlinger hit a two-run homer in the third and a solo blast in the fifth to lead the Golden Bears to a win over West Chester. Denlinger finished 3-for-4, with three RBIs and two runs scored. Arbogast pitched all seven innings to collect the win. She allowed one unearned run on five hits and no walks. She struck out seven for her 16th victory of the season. Cameron finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while Kim Morrison (sr. Newmarket, ONTARIO /Sir William Mulock) singled and scored a run.

       TUE 3/31 — KU 3, West Chester 1 — Denlinger and Cameron hit back-to-back two-out RBI singles to give KU the win. Cameron opened the scoring in the game, hitting a solo home run in the fourth. Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert) started for KU, pitching five innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk. She struck out five. Glomb picked up the win in relief — her eighth of the season — pitching two innings, allowing just one hit. She struck out three. Cameron led KU, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Reifsnyder also finished with two hits.

       SUN 4/5 — KU 6, New York Institute of Technology 4  — Denlinger hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to give KU a win over New York Institute of Technology. Cameron finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hannum had a pinch-hit two-run homer in the fourth inning. Arbogast allowed only one earned, on four hits and struck out two in 4 1/3 innings. Picking up the win was Hoch, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings. She gave up one unearned run, three hits and struck out three.

       SUN 4/5 — KU 5, Caldwell 5 (six innings) — KU was led offensively by Schiavo, who finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in a tie against Caldwell. Hannum finished 2-for-2 at the plate, collecting two RBIs and scoring a run. Glomb pitched four innings and struck out five. Hoch and Arbogast each pitched an inning of relief, with each recording two strikeouts apiece.

Men’s Tennis (6-3, 2-0 PSAC East)

       TUE 3/31 — KU 8, West Chester 1 — Kaushik Das (Assam, INDIA) won at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles to lead KU to a win. Das teamed with Rubens Vianna (sr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) to win2 in their No. 1 doubles match. Arpit Sharma (jr. Kolkata, INDIA) and Jonathan Goulet (jr. Quebec, CANADA) also went unbeaten for KU. Goulet won in the No. 2 singles and teamed with Santiago Baquerizo (sr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) to win in the No. 3 doubles match. Sharma and Lukas Labitsch (sr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won in No. 2 doubles win and Labitsch won at No. 3 singles. Andrew Torrealba (jr. Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) and Arijit Goswami (fr. Kolkata, INDIA) also picked up singles wins for KU.

       FRI 3/27 — KU 9, East Stroudsburg 0 — The No. 1 doubles team of Labitsch and Sharma won. Labitsch won his singles match in the second spot. Sharma also won his singles match at No. 3. Vianna and Goswami won their doubles match at No. 2 while Baquerizo and Goulet won at third doubles. Torrealba won in the fifth singles spot .

Women’s Tennis (8-2, 2-0 PSAC East)

       TUE 3/31 — KU 7, West Chester 2 — Barbara Joerns (jr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) and  Rohini Das (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) led KU to a win over West Chester. Joerns and Das teamed to win at No. 1 doubles, while Joerns won in the No. 1 singles and Das won in the No. 2 singles. Sabrina Arnaud (jr. Pintendre, CANADA), Nicole Devine (fr. Allentown/Allentown Central Catholic) and Tess Wright (so. Lewisburg/Lewisburg) also picked up wins in the singles matches for KU. Arnaud and Devine teamed to win the No. 2 doubles.

       FRI 3/27 — KU 7, East Stroudsburg 2 — Joerns and Das won their No. 1 doubles match in a win over East Stroudsburg. Das won her No. 1 singles match and Joerns won at No. 2. Arnaud, Devine, Shir Suez (jr. Even Yehuda, ISREAL) and Wright each won their singles matches.

Outdoor Track and Field

       SAT 4/4 — Men at 3rd/6 at PSAC East Challenge — KU finished third at the PSAC East Challenge, Christian Boutsikaris (sr. Newton/Newton) led the Golden Bears. Boutsikaris nailed a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 180-2. Jason Rebuck (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) placed behind him in third (172-7) and Sam Wall (so. Newville/Big Spring) was sixth 151-0. Rebuck also placed second in the discus (144-10) and eighth in the shot put (41-0 1/2). Wall was fourth in the discus (136-8) and fifth in the shot put (44-4 1/4). Greg Senatore (fr. Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) had KU’s best finish in the shot put, placing fourth (45-1 3/4). Cody Hartzler (sr. Belleville/Indian Valley) and Matt Cannell (fr. Douglassville/Daniel Boone) each had second-place finishes in the field, with Hartzler being the runner-up in the high jump (6-4 3/4) and Cannell placing second in the long jump (22-7 1/4). Robert Clews (so. Ashland/North Schuylkill), who was fourth in the triple jump (42-7), finished behind Cannell in the long jump, eighth with a jump of 20-5 3/4. Craig Sherwood (fr. Perkasie/Pennridge), Percell Berry (fr. Norristown/Methacton), William Hodges (jr. Levittown/Neshaminy) all tied for third in the pole vault (14-1 1/4). Jack Iosue (fr. Manheim/Manheim Central) was sixth in the javelin (176-7) to round out KU’s competitors in the field. On the track, Kendel Dixon (jr. Atglen/Octorara) placed second in the 400 (50.06) and seventh in the 200 (22.58). Jeffrey Collier (fr. Philadelphia/Lankenau) was eighth in the 400 ( 52.11). Frank Nick (fr. Kintnersville/Palisades) and Kevin Rodgers (jr. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) each had second-place finishes for KU. Nick was second in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:00.37) and Rodgers was second in the 5,000 (16:19.09). Shaun Crump (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) was third in the 800 (2:01.26) and T.J. Longmore (jr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) was third in the 110 hurdles (15.02). Matt Reightler (so. Bethlehem/Northampton) finished in fourth (2:01.37), while Longmore was followed by Shane Harvey (so. Pattenburg, N.J./North Hunterdon) in fifth (15.61) and Matt Bailey (fr. Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) in eighth (16.42). Ryan Reich (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) was fourth in the 1,500 (4:09.30) and Jason Rowles (jr. Broomall/Marple Newtown) was seventh in the 400 hurdles (1:00.69). In the 400 relay, Cannell, Dixon, Berry, Sam McKellar (sr. Allentown/Dieruff) finished fifth (43.44). Cannell, Collier, Joe Tavormina (so. Hellertown/Saucon Valley), Rowles also finished fifth in the 1,600 relay ( 3:24.51). The team of Berry, Dixon, Reightler, Crump were seventh in the 1,600 relay (3:29.60).

       SAT 4/4 — Women at 2nd/6 at PSAC East Challenge — The Kutztown University women’s outdoor track and field team finished second at the PSAC East Challenge. Melissa Fellenbaum (fr. Landisville/Hempfield), Cristina Reimer (so. Chester Springs/Downingtown East) and Ashley Pinter (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) each picked up first-place finishes for KU. Pinter placed first in the hammer throw with a toss of 159-8, while finishing second in both the shot put (38-4 1/4) and the discus (125-7). Reimer won the 3,000 steeplechase (11:31.57), while Fellenbaum took the top spot in the pole vault (11-0 1/4). Rachel Weigle (jr. Red Lion/Red Lion) finished tied for second behind Fellenbaum (10-6 1/4) and Alison Wise (jr. Fivepointville/Garden Spot) tied for sixth (9-6 1/4). Wise also placed seventh in the javelin (108-7). Christina Costanzo (fr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) placed fourth in the triple jump (35-3) and seventh in the long jump (16-7 3/4). In the high jump, Amy Tucker (fr. Ridley/Ridley) and Jennifer Zook (so. Lewistown/Indian Valley) tied for fifth (5-0 1/2). Cheryl Dingman (sr. Lansdale/North Penn) and Katie Quinn (jr. Glenolden/Interboro) recorded a pair of second-place finishes on the track for KU. Quinn was the runner-up in the 100 (12.95) and Dingman was second in the 3,000 (10:46.64). Samirah Barczynski (jr. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) finished sixth (13.04) behind Quinn, and Cupido placed fifth (10:57.04) behind Dingman. Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) was third in the 800 (2:22.23) and fourth in the 1,500 (4:58.03). In the 800, Jill Kostishion (fr. Hilltown/Pennridge) placed fourth (2:24.67) and Keri Brown (so. Southampton, N.J./Seneca) was fifth (2:26.95). Brown also finished seventh in the 1,500 (5:11.43). Kristin Cupido (so. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was fifth in the 3,000 (10:57.04) and Stephanie Grimm (fr. Fleetwood/Oley Valley) was third in the 5,000 (19:09.03). Katie Colburn (so. Hanover/South Western)  finished third in the 400 hurdles (1:07.31) and seventh in the 100 hurdles (16.22). Lynn Lisofsky (so. Wilkes-Barre/James M. Coughlin) was fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:09.09). Holly Pinkerton (sr. Pen Argyl/Pen Argyl) finished sixth in the 3,000 steeplechase (14:04.70). In the 400 relay, KU’s team of Barczynski, Quinn, Sarah Messner (so. Maple Glen/Upper Dublin) and Brooke Mathews (fr. Reedsville/Indian Valley) finished third (49.88), and in the 1,600 relay, Lisofsky, Horstmann, Colburn and Jessica Schlecter (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks South) teamed to finish fourth (4:12.82).
