SPRING SPORTS

Baseball (32-14, 16-8 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       WED 4/22 — KU 8, Albright 4 (at FirstEnergy Stadium) — KU defeated Berks County rival Albright at FirstEnergy Stadium. Corey Buletza (so. St. Claire/Pottsville) was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and James Quigley (so. Bensalem/Bensalem) was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, including a solo home run. Matt Kulbacki (jr. Hershey/Hershey) and Mike Kacelowicz (jr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) added two hits apiece. Kacelowicz had an RBI triple. Mike Moran (so. Fabius, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) earned the win and had two strikeouts.

       THU 4/23 — ADELPHI 9, KU 4 — Michael Dugan (so. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in a loss to Adelphi. Brett Wigder (so. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) was 1-for-3 with an RBI double.

       FRI 4/24 — KU 2, Millersville 0 — The Golden Bears got seven solid innings of shutout ball from starter Darin Gorski (jr. Mount Joy/Donegal) in a win over Millersville. Gorski struck out six and allowed six baserunners on three hits and three walks. Jared Frey (jr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Kulbacki finished with two hits.

       FRI 4/24 — Millersville 2, KU 0 — Cody Montz (fr. Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) was 1-for-1 and broke up a no-hitter in KU's loss to Millersville. Trent Mertz (so. Kutztown/Kutztown) pitched the complete game, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out two.

       SAT 4/25 — MILLERSVILLE 4, KU 3 — Dom Fantanarosa (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville)  hit his first career home run on Senior Day in loss to Millersville. Quigley hit a two-run homer.

       SAT 4/25 — KU 3, MILLERSVILLE 0 — Adam Maini (jr. Macungie/Emmaus) pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout to lead the KU over Millersville. Maini limited Millersville to six baserunners the entire game and allowed only one to reach third base. He struck out seven to earn his sixth win of the season. KU was led by Kacelowicz, who finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. Dugan was 2-for-3 with an RBI double.

       MON 4/20 — at Philadelphia University — canceled

       WED 4/22 — WEST CHESTER 25, KU 4 — KU dropped its season finale to  West Chester. Carrie Healey (jr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) scored an unassisted goal and had an assist. Megan Schwar (fr. Alpha, N.J./Phillipsburg) scored a goal off an assist by Xiomara Marin (sr. West Patterson, N.J./Passaic Valley). Leeann Pica (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy) had the Golden Bears’ final tally in the first half. Jennifer Natalini (jr. Pottstown/Pottsgrove) scored the final goal for KU.

 

Softball (43-8-1, 15-1 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

       FRI 4/24 — KU 4, EDINBORO 3 (8 innings) — Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) gave the Golden Bears an extra-inning win over Edinboro with a walk-off homer in the eigth inning of Game 2 in the first round of the PSAC tournament. Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) and Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) had back-to-back solo home runs. Fitzgerald finished the game 2-for 2. Kim Morrison (sr. Newmartket, ONT/Sir William Mulock) was 2-for-5. Katlin Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon) earned the win for the Golden Bears, pitching all eight innings. She struck out 10 in the game. She allowed three runs on five hits and a walk.

       SAT 4/25 — KU 3, EDINBORO 1 — Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert) pitched a complete-game win for the Golden Bears against Edinboro. Hoch struck out seven and limited Edinboro to four hits and retired 15 of the final 17 batters. Denlinger was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Maria Schiavo (jr. Old Forge/Old Forge) singled and scored a run. Cameron finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

       SUN 5/3 — PSAC semifinal vs. Bloomsburg (at Lock Haven) 1 p.m.

       SUN 5/3 — PSAC Championship vs Lock Haven (if KU wins in semifinal) 3 p.m.

 

Men’s Tennis (13-4, 5-0 PSAC)

       FRI 4/24 — KU 5, Mercyhurst 0 at PSAC Championships (at Bloomsburg) — KU defeated Mercyhurst in the PSAC semifinals. KU was led by Santiago Baquerizo (sr. Guayaquil, ECUADOR), who finished the day undefeated. He paired with Jonathan Goulet (jr. Quebec, CANADA) to win the No. 3 doubles. Baquerizo then won his singles match in the No. 2 spot. Kaushik Das (Assam, INDIA) and Rubens Vianna (sr. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) won in the No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-4. Lukas Labitsch (sr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) and Arpit Sharma (jr. Kolkata, INDIA) teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles. Andrew Torrealba (jr. Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) rounded out the winners for the Golden Bears at the No. 6 singles spot.

       SAT 4/25 — KU 5, Bloomsburg 2 at PSAC Championships) — KU was led by Baquerizo, who was 2-0 in the PSAC final and 4-0 for the tournament. He was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player. In the No. 3 doubles, Baquerizo paired with Goulet to win 8-0. Baquerizo also won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Labitsch also went 2-0, winning at No. 3 singles. He also teamed with Sharma to win at No. 2 doubles. Torrealba rounded out the winners for the Golden Bears at the No. 6 singles spot.

Women’s Tennis (11-6, 4-1 PSAC East)

       TUE 4/21 — KU 5, EAST STROUDSBURG 2 (PSAC PLAYOFF) — The Golden Bears got the match-clinching win from Sabrina Arnaud (jr. Pintendre, CANADA) at the No. 3 singles spot. Paired with Rohini Das (jr. Calcutta, INDIA), Arnaud also picked up a win in the No. 1 doubles. Das shutout her opponent in the No. 1 singles slot, 6-0, 6-0. Nicole Devine (fr. Allentown/Allentown Central Catholic) was a part of two KU wins on the day. She won at the fourth singles spot and teamed with Barbara Joerns (jr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) for a win in No. 2 doubles.

       FRI 4/24 — California (Pa.) 5, KU 0 (PSAC PLAYOFF) — The Golden Bears were shutout in a loss to California in the PSAC playoffs.

SAT 4/25 — Slippery Rock 5, KU 1 (PSAC PLAYOFF) — KU fell to Slippery Rock to earn fourth place at the PSAC Championships. Das picked up the only win for the Golden Bears in the No. 1 singles spot.

Outdoor Track and Field

       THU-FRI 4/23-4/24 — at Penn Relays — Ashley Pinter (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) led the Golden Bears with two top-25 finishes at the Penn Relays. She placed 20th in the discus (128-10) and 23rd in the shot put (38-11). Matt Cannell (fr. Douglassville/Daniel Boone) placed 18th in the long jump (21-9 1/2). In the 1,600 relay, KU finished sixth with a time of 3:21.06. The relay team was comprised of Percell Berry (fr. Norristown/Methacton), Shaun Crump (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown), Kendel Dixon (jr. Atglen/Octorara) and Joe Tavormina (so. Hellertown/Saucon Valley).

       SAT 4/25 — Men at Paul Kaiser Invitational (at Shippensburg) — Six first-place finishers led KU at the Paul Kaiser Classic. Dixon won the 400 (48.87) and placed seventh in the 200 (23.17). T.J. Longmore (jr. Lititz/Manheim Twp.) won the 110 hurdles (15.56), with Sam McKellar (sr. Allentown/Dieruff) finishing sixth (17.10). Kevin Rodgers (jr. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) took the top spot in the 10,000 (34:30.09). Jason Rebuck (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) was first in the discus (155-3) and second in the hammer throw (174-2). Winning the hammer throw was Christian Boutsikaris (sr. Newton/Newton) with a throw of 174-6. Justin Germani (so. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) finished with the best mark in the pole vault (16-0). William Hodges (jr. Levittown/Neshaminy) was second (15-7) and Craig Sherwood (fr. Perkasie/Pennridge) was fifth (14-5 1/4) in the pole vault. Ryan Reich (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) was second in the 5,000 (16:24.38). Frank Nick (fr. Kintnersville/Palisades) was sixth in the 3,000 (10:10.90) and Matt Reightler (so. Bethlehem/Northampton) was seventh in 800 (1:59.26). Cody Hartzler (sr. Belleville/Indian Valley) finished second in the high jump (6-7 1/2). Cannell was fifth in both the long jump (22-10) and the triple jump (43-5). Jack Iosue (fr. Manheim/Manheim Central) was third in the javelin (192-5). The Golden Bears also placed second in the 1,600 relay, as the team comprised of Tavormina, Dixon, Berry and Crump finishing in 3:20.77.

       SAT 4/25 — Women at Paul Kaiser Invitational (at Shippensburg) — KU was led by Kristin Cupido (so. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) at the Paul Kaiser Classic. Cupido placed second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:44.98. Steph Grimm (sr. Fleetwood/Oley Valley) also placed in the 3,000, with a time of 10:54.87 to place fifth. In the steeplechase, Hailey Dell (Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) placed 11th with a time of 11:58.82. Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) had fourth-place finishes in the 800 (2:18.09) and the 1,500 (4:37.33). Maureen Watson (jr. Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) finished in sixth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:51.48. The relay team of Rachel Hunte (fr. Chester Springs/Downingown East), Horstmann, Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western) and Jessica Schlechter (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks South) finished in fourth place in the 1,600 with a time of 4:01.44 On the field side, Melissa Fellenbaum (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) finished in third place, winning a three-way jump off in the pole vault with a height of 10-5 1/2. Rachel Weigle (jr. Red Lion/Red Lion), part of the jump off with Fellenbaum finished in sixth. Christina Costanzo (fr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) finished in sixth in the triple jump (35-8) and seventh in the long jump (17-0 3/4). Allison Kipp and Amy Tucker (fr. Ridley/Ridley) each had seventh place finishes. Kipp in the javelin with a throw of 105-5 1/2 and Tucker in the high jump with a height of 4-11.
