Last Week’s Action

       SAT 8/29 — KU 7, MERRIMACK 4 — The KU women's field hockey team used a solid second half to top Merrimack College 7-4 Saturday afternoon. Junior Anne Waapu (Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) started off the scoring for the Golden Bears, with an assist from Lauren Solley (Oley/Oley Valley). Waapu added another goal off of a penalty corner just before the end of the first half. Solley added a goal, and was assisted by Courtney Zook (Oley/Oley Valley). Freshman Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) scored two goals and had one assist. Brooke Mathews (Reedsville/Indian Valley) scored one goal. Abbey Sheeler (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) netted her first goal of the season. Goalkeeper Abby Rhone (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) picked up the win in the cage with two saves and no goals allowed.

Last Week’s Action

SAT 8/29 — KU 17, St. Anselm 13 — The Golden Bears overcame a second half deficit to defeat St. Anselm on Saturday. Running back Dontay Wilson (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) had a career day with 174 yards rushing. Wilson scored two touchdowns, including a fourth quarter 77 yard touchdown that proved to be the game winner. Shane Martin (New Holland/Garden Spot) was 13-for-20 passing with 135 yards. Chris McCormick (West Chester/West Chester East) led the team in receiving with four catches for 59 yards. Joel Irwin (Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan) had a team-high nine tackles and one for loss. Keith Massey (Allenton/William Allen) had eight tackles.

Women’s Soccer (1-0-, 0-0 PSAC East)

Last Week’s Action

FRI 8/28 — KU 2, MERCYHURST 1 (OT) — KU women's soccer team opened up the 2009 season with an overtime win over Mercyhurst College in a PSAC crossover contest. Shannon Pennock (Mansfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) popped the game winner over the goalies head :39 seconds into overtime, Jen Pyne (Wall, N.J./Wall) had the assist. Chelsea Bressler (Cleona/Annville-Cleona) scored a goal late in the first half to tie the contest at one. Junior captain Chelsea Deeter (Langhorne/Neshaminy) and Kelly Rozembersky (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury), along with the rest of the KU defense kept the Mercyhurst offense at bay. Both teams provided stellar defense throughout the contest, as KU freshman Alyssa Hackelberg (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) made four saves and earned her first collegiate win in net.
