RICHMOND, VA (December 5, 2009) —
The Kutztown University women’s bowling team went 4-2 today in
the two-day Jeanette Lee Invitational. The Golden Bears currently
sit in eighth place out of 20 teams from around the nation. They won
against Livingstone College 875-490, Bowie State 880-736, Virginia
State 895-780, and Saint Augustine 819-626.
The nationally ranked Golden Bears
lost their second match to Elizabeth City State 779-759, and fourth
match to Fayetteville 832-804.
Kutztown (26-18, 5-2) played all
six of today's matches in a traditional-bowl setting.
"The effort was there today," head
coach Joseph Ambrose said. "We just had two matches we really found
ourselves struggling to get through. But we were able to turn it
around and go 4-2 in the end."
Individually,
Kayla Jones (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) had the team's high
bowl of the day with a 206 against Virginia State. Also bowling over
200 was
Heather Shoemaker (West Milton/Lewisburg),
with a 204 against Saint Augustine.
Kayla
Stamm (Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) and
Stephanie Ray (West Lawn/Wilson) each earned a 203.
Jess
Abrecht (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial)
bowled a 201 against Bowie State in
match three.
"The lanes were more difficult than
we expected," Ambrose said. "We know now the lane conditions and can
go back tomorrow knowing what to expect."
"Our goal tomorrow is to shoot more
spares," Ambrose said. "We have to shoot more spares to be a lot
better tomorrow."
The tournament resumes on Sunday,
December 6 at 8:45 a.m. The Golden Bears will play baker style in
four games. They will face tournament host Saint Paul's College,
Johnson C. Smith, Chowan University, and North Carolina Central.
Their fifth match position and opponent will be determined following
the outcome of the four-baker matches.
Kutztown is currently ranked ninth
in the nation according to the latest polls released by the National
Tenpins Coaches Association. Within their conference, the Northeast
Conference, they are tied for first place.
