Kutztown closes NEC championship with solid
finish for first place
READING, PA (November 15, 2009) –
The Kutztown University bowling team closed out the Northeast
Conference (NEC) Championship Meet # 1 Sunday with a three-match win
streak. The Golden Bears beat Fairleigh Dickinson 1188-1186, New Jersey City
1350-1314, and Long Island 1345-849 to
be one of the four teams tied for first with a tournament record of
5-2.

In the closest
match the Golden Bears have seen all season, Kutztown beat Fairleigh
Dickinson by just two pins, 1188-1186.
"It came down to
that last bowled," head coach Joe Ambrose said.
Chelsea Adam (Reading/Exeter)
bowled a 171,
Nicole Gatto (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) had a 157, and
Stephanie Ray (West Lawn/Wilson) bowled a high 189. Teammates
Kayla Jones (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop)
bowled 155 and
Kayla
Stamm (Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) had a 154.
In the baker
matches against Fairleigh Dickinson, Kutztown bowled a 166 and 186.
In match two,
against New Jersey City, Adams bowled a high of 222. Gatto also
bowled
over 200, bowling a 213. Ray (194), Jones (191), and Stamm (170)
also performed for the Golden Bears.
In the baker
match against New Jersey City, Kutztown bowled a 196 and 164.
In the third
match, against Long Island, Kutztown started strong, and never
looked back. Ray scored a high of 222. Adam scored a 201. Stamm
bowled a 188, and Jones bowled a 182.
Heather Shoemaker (West Milton/Lewisburg) bowled a 167.
In the baker
match against Long Island, Kutztown scored a 178 and 207.
The main part of
our outcome in this weekend's tournament was that we focused on
staying strong, never giving up," said Kayla Jones. "If we were
down, we fought back. If we were ahead, we fought to stay on top."
Four teams tied
for first place in the weekend tournament, all with a record of 5-2;
Kutztown, St. Francis, Adelphi and New Jersey City. Tied for fifth
place is Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Peter's, who both finished the
tournament with a 3-4 record. Sacred Heart earned a 2-5 record
and in eight place is Long Island, who went 0-7 this weekend.
"Our conference
is tough," said captain Steph Ray. "All the teams are equally
matched, making it a hard fight for each match. Sometimes it's a
tough break for us."
The Golden Bears
return to action on November 20, when they travel to University of
Maryland Eastern Shore for a three day tournament in Millsboro,
Delaware.
