Kutztown splits matches at NEC Championship
Meet
READING, PA (November 14, 2009) –
Hosting the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship Meet # 1 this
weekend, the Kutztown bowling team ended a tough afternoon on
opening day, splitting their matches 2-2. The Golden Bears lost
their first and third matches to Adelphi 1212-1185 and Sacred Heart
1308-1299. Kutztown beat St. Francis1273-1265 in the second match
and finished out the first day of the tournament beating St. Peter's
1263-1174.
"Coming
out with a 2-2 record for the day is not the best we could have
done, and also not the worst," Head Coach Joe Ambrose said. "Our
team was grinding hard today on very tough lane conditions where
spare making was the order of the day."
Leading the
Golden Bears in the first match against Adelphi, who is 4-0 in the
tournament,
Stephanie Ray (West Lawn/Wilson), who bowled a 209.
Assisting her on the lanes was
Kayla
Stamm (Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) (167),
Kayla
Jones (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) (161),
Nicole Gatto (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) (155) and
Chelsea Adam (Reading/Exeter) (154).
Entering the
second game, the Golden Bears' lead scorer was Adam who bowled a 213
to help Kutztown beat St. Francis by eight points.
"Chelsea Adam's
213 score vs. St. Francis was huge for us," Ambrose said. "Kayla
Stamm's two strikes in the last frame of the St. Francis game helped
pull that one out for us."
In game four,
Stamm led the Golden Bears with 191 points.
Heather Shoemaker (West Milton/Lewisburg) followed with 184,
and Jones bowled a 182.
Molly DeMatties (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) (173) and Ray (171)
also represented Kutztown.
Kutztown
couldn't extend their win, losing to Sacred Heart by eight points.
Jones, who started off slowly, showed her skills later in the day,
ending match three with an impressive 247.
The Golden Bears
lost all four of their Baker matches. Adelphi defeated Kutztown
178-161. Against St. Francis, Kutztown lost 202-143. In their
closest baker match, Sacred Heart defeated the Golden Bears 202-198.
St. Peter's also beat Kutztown 194-168.
After the first day, Adelphi leads the tournament
4-0. New Jersey City, who is an associate member of the NEC is in
second place (3-1). Kutztown is ranked third, with a score of 2-2.
Also splitting their matches are Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacred Heart
and St. Francis. St. Peters is currently in seventh place with a
score of 1-3, followed by Long Island who is 0-4.
"We're bowling
in the best conference right now," Adam said of Kutztown's
performance after the first day. "We lost two. We need to keep
making strikes and spares to make it at the top of the conference."
"When we all
bowl as a team is when we do best," Stamm said. "As long as we keep
our heads straight and continue to concentrate, we will do our
best."
The tournament continues Sunday morning at 9:20
a.m. at Bowl O Rama lanes. Three matches remain. The Golden Bears will battle
Fairleigh Dickinson, New Jersey City and Long Island.
