KUTZTOWN, PA. (October 20, 2009) – The Kutztown University
bowling team is ranked 10th in the National Tenpins
Coaches Association (NTCA) preseason poll. It is the highest
preseason ranking in three-year history of the bowling program.
“It's great to be ranked this
high, but since we want to make it to nationals we know we want to
be much higher and we have a lot of work ahead of us to accomplish
that,” Kutztown University bowling coach Joe Ambrose
said. “The Top 8 teams (are selected to participate in the NCAA
tournament) and that's our ultimate goal since we want to bring a
national championship to KU.”

Kutztown finished the 2008-09 season
with a 98-54 record. The Golden Bears won the regular season title
in the Northeast Conference (NEC) with 15-3 record. The Golden Bears
finished as the runner-ups at the NEC Championship tournament,
falling to Farleigh Dickinson 4-0 in the title match. Kutztown ended
the year ranked 11th in the final NTCA poll.
Sophomore Kayla Jones
leads a talented group of returning bowlers. Jones was named
the 2008-09 NCAA Division II Rookie of the Year, Northeast
Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Year and Bowler of the Year by the
National Tenpins Coaches Association. Jones, who averaged a 193.7,
was also named to the NTCA All-America second team.
Steph Ray (second team NEC
Conference), Kayla Stamm (2009 NEC Conference Championships
All Tournament Team, 2007-08 National Division II Rookie of the
Year), and Chelsea Adam (NEC & NTCA Academic All-American)
return to provide terrific depth and experience. Stamm and Ray are
original members of the first KU bowling team.
Kutztown begins its 2009-10 season
by hosting the KU Invitational at Berks Lanes in Reading on
Saturday, Oct. 24 beginning at 10 a.m.
The University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, the defending NCAA national champions was voted as
the No. 1 team in the 2009-10 National Tenpin Coaches Association
preseason poll. The NTCA conducts monthly polls during the NCAA
women’s bowling regular season. The 2009 NCAA title was the Huskers’
third in the six-year history of NCAA women’s bowling
championships.
Rounding out the Top
10 was Vanderbilt, Farleigh-Dickinson, University of Central
Missouri, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Delaware State,
Arkansas State, New Jersey City University and Sacred Heart
University.
The NTCA is the
organization of NCAA bowling head coaches.
