Kutztown ready to pull out the tricks for Fright Night Invite
KUTZTOWN, PA (October 29, 2009) —
The Kutztown University women’s
bowling team will be traveling to Elmwood, NJ for the
three-day Fright Night Invitational at Farleigh Dickinson University this
weekend.
The Golden Bears (4-1 overall) were
picked to finish second in the Northeast Conference preseason poll.
They are also ranked 10th in the National Tenpins
Coaches Association (NTCA) preseason poll. It is the highest
preseason ranking in three-year history of the bowling program.
Kutztown kicks off the tournament on
Friday, Oct. 30 when they play four Baker-matches. On Saturday, the
team will participate in the five-traditional-team
matches. On Sunday, all teams will compete in a one-traditional-team
match in the morning. If Kutztown does well in team standings, and
has a high number of pins knocked down from all previous matches,
they could get a seed-spot for the playoffs that will take place
Sunday afternoon. If the Golden Bears do qualify for the
tournament’s playoffs, Kutztown will play in the best of
seven-baker-style tournament.
The Golden Bears will play all eleven
teams at least once, before the playoffs take place.
Joining Kutztown on the lanes will be
Adelphi University, Bethune-Cookman (FL), Delaware State, Florida
A&M, Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus, University of Maryland
Eastern Shore (UMES), Morgan State, Sacred Heart, University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater, New Jersey City, and host Farleigh Dickinson.
“All twelve teams have great
programs,” head coach Joe Ambrose said. “Nine of these teams are
nationally ranked, so this will be a great tournament for our team
to compare themselves to the other teams and see how we perform
against the best (in the nation), this early in the season."
To prepare for the upcoming Fright
Night Invite, Kutztown has been focusing on lane conditions.
“We’re using the U.S. Men’s Open
lane patterns they used last year,” Ambrose said. “If our women can
play well on the condition of these lanes, then they’ll perform well
this weekend. We just need to focus, and gel as a team. We need to
remember to work together. At the end of the day, this isn’t about
individual performance that gets us places.”
Kutztown returned their strong
starters from last season, and tacked on a strong freshman lineup.
“This is a terrific group of bowlers,"
Ambrose said. "I’m very impressed with how the freshman performed
last weekend. For most of the them (freshman) this was the
first time they played in baker-style. They did extremely well.”
The Golden Bears kicked off their
season last weekend, at home, when they hosted the Kutztown Fall
Baker Invitational. The Golden Bears went 4-1 in the tournament
opening
up the day with an 870-793 win over Penn State-Altoona, followed by
a 900-874 loss to dual champion St. Francis. KU pulled out a 954-919
win against Adelphi before dismantling Cheyney 902-566. The final
match was the Golden Bears closest one, a 901-878 victory over St.
Peters.
The Fright Night Invite
is expected to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, and resume Saturday at
9:30 a.m. On Sunday, the Golden Bears will play their final match at
9:30 a.m. before knowing if they enter the tournament playoffs.
