Kutztown picks up three victories and climb
up tournament standings
ELMWOOD PARK, NJ
(October 31, 2009) –
The Kutztown University women’s bowling team rebounded from a
difficult opening night to capture three of five matches on the
second day of the Fright Night Invitational hosted by Farleigh
Dickinson Saturday afternoon.
Playing traditional team
matches for the first time this season, the Golden Bears edged a
pair of Northeast Confernce rivals in eighth-ranked New Jersey City,
900-898 and third-ranked and host FDU, 1,055-1,027. Kutztown also
defeated Florida A&M University, 837-754. The Golden Bears dropped
matches to 16th-ranked Morgan State, 841-808, and 13th-ranked
Adelphi, 974-933.
Kutztown’s leader on the
day was junior Kayla Stamm (Mohnton/Governor Mifflin). She
averaged a team-high 205.6 through five matches. Stamm rolled a 203
against New Jersey City and a 255 against Adelphi. Stamm also
enjoyed a pair of 198 matches in victories over Florida A&M and
Farleigh Dickinson.
Other strong efforts
were turned in by sophomore Chelsea Adam (Reading/Exeter) and
freshman Nicole Gatto (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan). Adam
averaged a 191 in four matches. Adam enjoyed her best matches
against the two teams from the Northeast Conference. Adam’s best
game was a 224 against FDU. She also finished with a 203 against New
Jersey City.
Meanwhile, Gatto
finished the afternoon with an 185.5 average. Her best match was a
213 against FDU. Gatto also rolled a 180 against Morgan State.
Sophomore Kayla Jones (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) enjoyed a
195 against FDU.
“I hate to individualize
people, but Kayla Stamm was great today,” head coach Joe Ambrose
said. “Chelsea Adam was phenomenal today in the leadoff position
and was one of the players of the event today in the first three
games. In addition, freshman Nicole Gatto showed how good she can be
as she played four matches.”
The Golden Bears
conclude the Fright Night Invitational Sunday morning with a
traditional team match against Long Island University. Then Kutztown
will be seeded according to pin total and play some best-of-seven
Baker matches in which the top four teams still have an opportunity
to win the entire tournament. Kutztown was in fourth place heading
into its final match of the afternoon.
“Our girls came back so
well today and made the necessary adjustments after a day of
struggle on Friday during Bakers,” Ambrose said. “I could not be
more proud of this team and we are really excited about the final
day on Sunday, despite having some matches that did not go our way.”
