Women’s bowling ready to roll at Jeanette Lee Invitational
KUTZTOWN, PA
(December 5, 2009) - The Kutztown University women’s bowling
team will conclude the first part of its season on the road, in the
Jeanette Lee Invitational in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday,
December 5 and Sunday December 6.
Sponsored by
Saint Paul’s College, the 18 other teams participating are Bowie
State, Elizabeth City State, Virginia State, Johnson C. Smith,
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, New Jersey City, Adelphi,
Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacred Heart, Fayetteville State, Saint
Augustine’s, Chowan, Long Island, St. Francis, Elmhurst, North
Carolina Central, Livingstone, and Central Missouri.
In a unique
twist, Kutztown will travel by
charter bus with Northeast Conference rivals Sacred Heart, Long
Island, and St. Francis.
“I’ve heard of
teams from the same school traveling together,” head coach Joseph
Ambrose said, “But I’ve never heard of four conference rival teams,
in any sport, sharing the same bus to get to the same tournament.
It’s going to be an interesting four and half hour ride, needless to
say.”
Kutztown won’t
let sharing close traveling arrangements get in the way of what
needs to be done at the tournament this weekend. Kutztown is
scheduled to compete in six traditional style bowling matches on
Saturday. On Sunday they will have five matches consisting of
four-game baker style play before heading home.
“We’re looking
forward to this tournament,” Ambrose said. “Eight of the teams
scheduled to compete are big opponents of ours, so we’re going
to have a few close, tough matches potentially, but matches we
can expect to win.”
The Golden
Bears (22-16, 5-2), are expecting fierce competition this
weekend from their top competitors.
Every match
this weekend is important for Kutztown. The Golden Bears are now
ranked ninth nationally, according to the latest poll released by
the National Tenpins Coach’s Association.
In the
Northeast Conference, Kutztown is tied for first place, sharing a
5-2 conference record with St. Francis, N.Y. (18-7), Adelphi (23-15)
and New Jersey City (18-15).
“We moved up a
spot nationally, so we’re excited to be in the top 10,” Ambrose
said. “We need to be in the top eight at the end of the season to
make nationals, so we’re just about there, and once we are, we are
capable of holding our position.”
Leading the
Golden Bears are
Kayla Jones (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop),
Stephanie Ray (West Lawn/Wilson), and
Kayla
Stamm (Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) In their last outing at the
University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) tournament two weeks
ago, Jones averaged 194.8 in five games. She knocked down 974 pins.
Ray averaged 178.4 in five games with 892 knocked pins. Stamm
averaged 160.5 in four performances.
Also assisting
the Golden Bears maintain first place in the conference is
Chelsea Adam (Reading/Exeter),
Nicole Gatto (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan),
Jess Abrecht (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and
Heather Shoemaker (West Milton/Lewisburg).
“Chelsea
Adam is greatly improved and a starter,” Ambrose said. Adam
averaged 160.2 and knocked over 641 pins in the UMES tournament.
“Abrecht and
Shoemaker have been doing very well the past 2 events,” Ambrose
said.
Abrecht
averaged 161 and knocked over 161 pins in the UMES tournament.
Shoemaker averaged 188.5 in the UMES tournament with 377 knocked
pins.
“This
is the final tournament weekend before winter break for the
team, so it’s crucial to win these matches,” Ambrose said. “We
have off for winter break. When we come back for spring
semester, we start the second half of our season right away,
with the three-day Terriers New Years’ Knockdown Tournament.”
The Jeanette
Lee Invitational begins at noon on Saturday, Dec. 5 and concludes on
Sunday, Dec. 6. The team has a month off for winter break, and
return to action on Jan. 16 when they travel to Staten Island, N.Y.
for the Terrier’s New Years’ Knockdown tournament. Kutztown returns
home on Jan. 29 to host the three-day KU Invitational in Reading,
PA.
