Bloomsburg 5, Kutztown 2
BOXSCORE
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Five first-half
goals, including three in a span of four minutes, helped No. 2
Bloomsburg defeat the No. 3 Kutztown University field hockey team
5-2 Saturday at University Field.
KU’s Anne Waapu (r-fr. Hastings, NEW
ZEALAND) scored twice, both off of corners, in the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference game. She now has 11 goals for the Golden
Bears.
But her two tallies were not enough
against the PSAC’s top-scoring offense, with 30-goal scorer Jamie
Vanartsdalen leading the way.
After Chelsea Due made it 1-0 in the
17th minute, Vanartsdalen scored to make it 2-0 before Waapu cut it
to 2-1 with 11:45 remaining in the first half.
Bloomsburg (16-3, 11-3 PSAC) bounced
back after Waapu’s goal, scoring in the 29th, 30th and 33rd minute
to make it 5-1.
KU (17-3, 11-3 PSAC) had chances in the
second half, posting 13 shots, but Bloomsburg’s Allison Ziants made
11 saves to preserve the win for Bloomsburg.
The Golden Bears finally squeaked one
past her when Waapu, off a corner pass from Alyssa Maltese (so.
Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown), blasted a shot past Ziants at
the 58:40 mark. Maltese also assisted Waapu on KU’s first goal.
Sam Flowers (sr.
Harleysville/Souderton), after a tough first half, finished
strong, making a total of eight saves, and shutting out Bloomsburg
in the second half.
KU and Bloomsburg will face each other
again at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals of the PSAC
Championships at Indiana (Pa.). The top seed, Indiana, will host No.
4-seeded Shippensburg at 4 p.m.
