BOXSCORE
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The No. 5-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team had the
first win of the season in its hands, but a late rally and a
heart-breaking overtime goal gave No. 9 East Stroudsburg University
the 3-2 win Wednesday at University Field.
The
Golden Bears opened the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East
game on fire, with
Anne Waapu (so.
Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) scoring at the 3:55 mark off a
corner and
Kelley Healey
(sr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) made it 2-0
with 15:53 left in regulation.
East
Stroudsburg (4-0, 1-0 PSAC East), however, scored twice in the final
eight minutes to tie the game.
Molly
McNeil punched in a loose ball during a scrum with 7:49 left and
Caitlin Brownley took a crossing pass from McNeil to tie the game
with 1:34 remaining.
In
overtime with teams playing 7-on-7, East Stroudsburg continued to
pressure and Monica Gombita, taking a pass from Brownley, easily
pushed in the game-winner at the 74:31 mark.
The
Golden Bears (0-1, 0-1 PSAC East) outshot East Stroudsburg 10-8 and
played solid defense in the first half, not allowing a Warrior shot
until there was a free corner play with no time on the clock.
In the
second half, KU continued to suffocate East Stroudsburg’s offense
until the Warriors began to find openings in the final 10 minutes.
Abbey Sheeler
(so. Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) and
Whitney Stum
(sr. Landisburg/West Perry)
each had assists for KU.
The Golden Bears will return to University Field for the Joshua W.
Wesner Memorial Tournament on Friday, which kicks off with KU
playing Philadelphia University at 1 p.m. The tournament continues
with Catawba vs. Bellarmine at 3, KU vs. Bellarmine at 5 and
Philadelphia vs. Catawba at 7.
Bellarmine and Philadelphia will play Saturday morning at 9 with KU
and Catawba closing out the tournament at 11 a.m.
