KU falls to C.W. Post in double overtime
KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 26, 2009)
- The Kutztown University field hockey team dropped a 4-3 double
overtime thriller to C.W. Post in a Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Eastern Division contest at University Field.

With both teams running
on fumes in the second overtime, Kristina Gustafson found the
back of the cage off of a rebound for the game clincher.
The Golden Bears missed
a few scoring chances in the overtime frames. The scoring
opportunities came about with the speedy transitions from
Jenna
Gregory (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg),
Lauren
Solley (Oley/Oley Valley),
Abbey
Sheeler (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) and
Carrie
Healey (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North).
The second half had 15
minutes of penalty time between the two teams and a penalty stroke
for the Golden Bears. KU called upon junior
Katie Brautigan (Bernville/Tulpehocken) for the penalty
stroke. Brautigan unleashed a shot past the keeper and into the
right corner of the cage to give the Golden Bears a brief 3-2 lead.
Amanda Nann
scored her second goal of the game with 12:41 remaining in
regulation that evened up the contest and eventual forced the
overtime.
The first half was back
and forth with KU starting the scoring six minutes into the game
when Solley snagged a rebound and drove the ball into the right
corner. Solley entered the contest tied for third in Division II
with 1.29 goals per game average.
Following a Pioneer
goal, Sheeler ripped a shot into the right corner off an assist by
Kim
Angstadt (Oley/Oley Valley).
Goalkeeper
Emily
Falko (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) made 10 saves for the Golden
Bears. Brautigan made two defensive saves and Angstadt had one when
the Pioneers tried to sneak rebounds into the corner away from Falko.
KU struggled with
capitalizing on penalty corners, as they held a 20-13 advantage and
were unable to score off of any of them. The Pioneers first goal
came off of a penalty corner.
The Golden Bears look to
bounce back on Wednesday with a trip to Mansfield. The PSAC East
contest will begin at 6 p.m.
