KU continues dominance, takes first place
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
—
The Kutztown University
field hockey team defeated Bellarmine 4-1to take first place in the
Joshua W. Wesner Memorial Tournament after two days of dominating
play.
KU outscored
its
opponents 17-2 throughout the tournament and allowed only eight shots in
the three games it played.
The defense hounded
Bellarmine all day and kept the ball on the offensive end for KU. In
the first half, the Golden Bears (4-0) had 14 shots on goal and four
found the back of the cage.
Kim
Angstadt (Oley/Oley Valley) deflected a pass from
Lauren
Solley (Oley/Oley Valley) into the left corner to start
the scoring. Angstadt scored an unassisted goal just over a minute
later.
Solley took a pass from
Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and fired it
past the goalie into the right corner.
Julie Rosenkaimer (Lansdale/North Penn) finished the
first half scoring, putting a shot through the left side of the goal
off of a penalty corner.
In the second half, the
Knights (2-3) managed to find some more time in the KU side of the
field. Emily West dribbled through traffic and was able to
fire a shot into the left corner of the cage to put Bellarmine on
the board.
Goalkeeper Katie
Lange had 15 saves in the cage for Bellarmine and did not allow
any goals in the second half.
The Golden Bear defense
clamped down after that and did allow many up looks for the
remainder of the game.
The Golden Bears have
now improved to 18-0 and champions of the past six Joshua W. Wesner
Memorial Tournament(s).
There was an 11-player
all-tournament team selected by the coaches following the contest,
with Solley, Healey, Brautigan, Gregory and Angstadt being selected
for the Golden Bears.
KU looks to ride this
momentum as they travel to three-time defending national champion
Bloomsburg on Monday for a 7 p.m. contest.
Golden Bear defense suffocates Limestone, KU wins 4-0
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
—
Coach Betty Wesner
called on the fresh legs of her freshman and sophomores with the
Golden Bears playing back-to-back games. The young squad rose to the
occasion and provided all the offense needed in the first half in a
4-0 win over Limestone.
"I thought that as young
as they are, the girls played really well together," said coach
Wesner. "Their play impressed me and felt it is the start of good
things to come."
The Golden Bear defense pitched a 4-0 shutout and allowed only one
Lady Saint (0-3) shot. Freshman goalkeeper
Karly
Waltman (Birdsboro/Twin Valley) earned her first collegiate
win, and unfortunately for her the defense never allowed a ball to
reach her in the cage.
KU wasted no time
getting on the board, with
Julie Rosenkaimer (Lansdale/North Penn) dribbling ahead of
the goalie then diving and hitting the ball into the cage, all in
one motion.
Anne
Waapu (Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) scored a goal off a penalty
corner, sandwiched between two scores by
Rachel Fontaine (Telford/Pennridge).
Fontaine deflected a
pass from
Brooke Mathews (Reedsville/Indian Valley) into the cage for
her first goal of the season. Fontaine finished out the KU scoring
when
Ericka
Diehl (Fleetwood/Fleetwood) snuck a pass through the defense
to set up the goal.
The Golden Bears held a
16-1 shot advantage and a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
In their first two games
of the Joshua W. Wesner Memorial Tournament, the Golden Bears have
outscored their opponents 13-1 and have allowed only two shots.
The Golden Bears will
play Bellarmine on Saturday after the completion of Catawba and
Limestone, which starts at 10 a.m. on University Field.
Solley's
career day powers KU to win over Catawba
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
—
Lauren
Solley (Oley/Oley Valley) supplied the offense for the
Golden Bears and the defense supplied the pressure in an 9-1 win
over Catawba College on Friday afternoon
Solley had a career-best five goals,
delivering two in the first half and three in the second half.
Just 2:31 into the game Solley found
the back of the cage to provide the spark for the Golden Bears
(2-0). Each of Solley's goals were made possible with excellent
passes to set her up for scoring opportunities.
Carrie
Healey (Toms River, Toms River North) provided two of the
assists, while
Anne
Waapu (Hastings, NEW ZEALAND),
Kim
Angstadt (Oley/Oley Valley) and
Jenna
Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg).
The KU defense did not allow a
Catawba shot until 5:37 remaining in the game. The shot managed to
find the back of the cage off of the stick of Jessica Paine. The
Lady Indians goalkeeper Bronwen Gainsford was tested all day, making
22 saves.
Abbey
Sheeler (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) added two goals,
sneaking each of them past the goalie and into the left corner of
the cage.
Late in the second half, Healey
followed her own shot and put the rebound into the back of the cage
for her first goal of the season. Gregory took a a pass from
Angstadt and created enough space to knock a shot past the goalie
for Golden Bears final tally.
"Our teams success was due to the
intensity of our midfielders," said coach Betty Wesner.
"Their awesome play made an easy transition from defense to offense
which made for great scoring opportunities."
The Golden Bears outshot 36-1 and
held a 22-0 advantage in penalty corners.
