Golden Bears fall in PSAC semifinal to Shippensburg

KUTZTOWN, PA (October 30, 2009) - The Kutztown University field hockey team fought hard but were unable to generate enough offense in a 2-0 loss to Shippensburg in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference semifinal round. (BOXSCORE)

The PSAC West No. 1 seed Lady Raiders scored both of their goals in the first half and relied on the defense for the second half.

The Golden Bears (PSAC East No. 2 seed) supplied a lot pressure on offense, but were unable to find an opening against the Shippensburg keeper.

Abbey Sheeler (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) and Carrie Healey (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) each had two shots on goal. The Golden Bears as a team had a 7-5 advantage with shots on goal.

Emily Falko (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) and Karly Waltman (Birdsboro/Twin Valley) split halves in cage for the Golden Bears with each making one save. Breah Kinney (Forty Fort/Wyoming Valley West) made a clutch defensive save.

Shippensburg will meet Bloomsburg in the PSAC finals on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Golden Bears have a shot at making the NCAA Championships held on Friday November 6 and Saturday November 7 if they enter the top-three in the Division II Regional rankings.


PSAC semifinal preview

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (October 29, 2009) The Kutztown University field hockey team will take on host Shippensburg in the semifinal round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships on Friday October 30 at 2:30 p.m.

 
 

The Golden Bears (12-7, 4-4 PSAC East) fell in both of their contests with the Lady Raiders this season. The PSAC West No. 1 seed Shippensburg won 2-1 on the road at KU and 2-0 at home.

KU, ranked No. 7 nationally and No. 4 in the region, enter as the PSAC East No. 2 seed. Senior Lauren Solley (Oley/Oley Valley) led the Golden Bears in scoring in the regular season with 13 goals.

Anne Waapu (Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) and freshman Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) have been sparks on the offensive end all season.

Emily Falko (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) made 101 saves, starting in 16 contests, but missed the regular-season finale due to injury. Freshman Karly Waltman (Twin Valley/Birdsboro) made the start against C. W. Post, making two saves and allowing only one goal.

The Lady Raiders are ranked No. 2 in the nation for the last four polls, after holding the No. 1 spot for a few weeks.Kristina Taylor, who tops the nation with 23 goals, leads paces the Shippensburg offense. Goalkeeper Amanda Houser leads Division II with a save percentage of .859 and a goals-against average of 0.72.

Before the Golden Bears match, Bloomsburg (PSAC East No. 1) will take on Mercyhurst (PSAC West No. 2) at noon. The winners of the semifinal round will face each other in the PSAC finals on Saturday October 30 at 1 p.m.
