Golden Bears drop match with No. 1 Bloomsburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2009) - Anne Waapu (Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) scored two goals as the Kutztown University field hockey team fell 5-2 to Bloomsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division contest.

Anne Waapu added two goals for KU

The Golden Bears, entered the contest ranked No. 5, had a 2-1 lead midway through the first half after Waapu placed a shot past the goalie and into the back right corner of the cage.

Waapu scored her first goal off a penalty corner with Abbey Sheeler (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights) providing the assist. Waapu wound up and unleashed a line drive into the left corner of the cage to even the score at one apiece.

The Huskies came into the contest ranked No. 2 and recent winners over No. 1 ranked Shippensburg earlier in the week. BU proved too strong, with two goals within two minutes to take a 3-2 lead late in the first half. The momentum stayed on the Huskies side in the second half with two goals and allowing only one shot on goal by Kutztown.

The Golden Bears battled all night and the score does not do justice for the effort they gave. KU held a 12-11 advantage in penalty corners and managed eight shots on goal against the stingy defense of the Huskies.

"I knew we would come out with intensity," said assistant coach Beth Wheeler. "We had a great practice on Friday night and the girls were giving everything they had. Their effort was beyond what I expected, we came out of our slump. The score does not reflect our effort."

Emily Falko (Catasauqua/Catasauqua) made nine saves in cage and Breah Kinney (Forty Fort/Wyoming Valley West) had a defensive save.

The Golden Bears will travel to Shippensburg on Monday for a 4 p.m. contest.
