Bloomsburg shuts down KU, wins 22-8

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Carrie Healey (jr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Rachel Mehaffey (fr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) each scored three goals to lead the Kutztown University women’s lacrosse team, but Bloomsburg University used a big second half to win 22-8 Thursday at Keystone Field.

The Golden Bears tied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East contest at 6-6 with 12:05 left in the first half, but Bloomsburg (9-4, 6-2 PSAC East) went on a 16-2 run to close out the game.

KU (1-13, 0-9 PSAC East) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal from Healey and kept it close over the first eight minutes.

Mehaffey’s goal at the 12:05 mark tied the game at 6-6, before Bloomsburg went on a 5-1 run to take an 11-7 lead into halftime.

KU was outscored 11-1 in the second half.

Leeann Pica (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy) and Janice Kinney (jr. Spring City/Owen J. Roberts) had goals for KU, and Xiomara Marin (sr. West Patterson, N.J./Passaic Valley) had an assist.

Bloomsburg’s Tia Mazzie, Samantha King and Kylie Matthews all had four goals. Brieanna Wolfe had three goals and three assists.

KU will return home to host Edinboro for a PSAC crossover at 1 p.m. Saturday at Keystone Field.
