Wesleyan
comes back from three down, forces game seven
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— West Virginia Wesleyan plated seven straight runs to take down the
Golden Bears 9-6 in the eight-inning NCAA Division II Atlantic Region-2 championship
matchup and force a deciding seventh game.
After falling behind 2-0 early, KU tied the game up with two runs in
the bottom of the third.
Maria Schiavo (jr. Old Forge/Old Forge)
started the inning with a single, followed by
Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton),
who reached on an error with a shot up the middle that the second
baseman could not handle.
Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection)
knocked in Schiavo with a single and Denlinger eventually scored on
a sacrifice fly by
Krista Tedjeske (so. Summerhill/Forest Hills).
The Golden Bears scored three in the fourth inning to take a 5-2
lead. A balk by the pitcher with the bases loaded scored
Heather Hannum (fr. Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham),
who reached on a walk.
Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart)
knocked in Schiavo and Denlinger with a single to the gap in
right-center.
The Bobcats chased
Katlin Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon)
from the game with two outs in the sixth with a two-run home run by
Stephanie St. Peter, which tied the game at 5. Arbogast allowed three earned runs on six hits, while striking out three.
In the top of the eighth, the Bobcats scored three runs on a bases-clearing double by Desiree Sibera. They tacked on one more with an
RBI
single by Megan Rachford.
Denlinger, who finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, led off the
eighth with a double to right center, followed by Fitzgerald with a
single to right. Cameron singled to right for her third hit and
drove in Denlinger for her third RBI of the game.
The KU threat ended there after Patricia Moreno forced a popout and
lineout to notch the save.
